User Guide Key Reprogramming Solution
1 Introduction
This product has been developed for automotive security professionals in the
United States that are registered with the National Automotive Service Task
Force (NASTF) Automotive Security Professionals Registry.
The J2534 Locksmith Key Reprogramming application provided by Land Rover
is only for use on North American specification vehicles within the United
States.
Note
The enabling of a new key may result in existing keys held by the owner
becoming invalid, with a further key learning required with all keys present to
re-enable their functionality.
2 System Requirements
Software
This Key Reprogramming application has been tested with the following
operating systems:
Windows XP Professional (Service pack 1 and Service Pack 2)
(Correct functionality on other operating systems is not guaranteed)
This application has been designed to run within Microsoft Internet Explorer
Hardware
Pentium III 800 MHz computer with 256 MB RAM
Display resolution of 1024x768 or greater, 16 bit colour
10/100 Mbit Ethernet card (Only required if your J2534 interface box uses
an Ethernet connection)
J2534 interface device
Note
Use of this Key Reprogramming application will require a Land Rover interface
dongle Part No. DTC 4220A. The interface allows the J2534 interface box to
connect to the vehicles medium speed controller area network (CAN)
communications lines in the J1962 diagnostic connector.
Details for purchasing this interface are detailed separately on the GTR
website and at the end of this document.

3 Software Installation
Before installing this Key Reprogramming application, be sure to install the
driver software for your J2534 interface device. This should either be supplied
with the interface device or may be downloaded from the website of the
interface device manufacturer.
Refer to the instructions supplied with the interface device for more details
You must have administrator privileges on the computer to install and use this
application.
Download the Key Reprogramming installation application to your computer.
Once the Key Reprogramming application has been downloaded, start the
installation process. Follow the on screen prompts.
Firewall Notice
Firewalls may prevent this software from functioning properly.
To prevent this you must allow all firewall exceptions required by this software.
The requested exceptions may not contain JLR or J2534 in the name.
Failure to allow the exceptions as prompted by your firewall may require

extensive manual configuration of the exceptions within the firewall package.
Applications Requiring Firewall Exceptions
In the following table replace the "..." in the file name with the directory where
IDS was installed. For example, "" would be replaced with "C:\Program
Files\JLR\IDS" for the default installation directory.
The items in the table have been copied from the Window Firewall Exceptions
list as set programmatically for the Windows firewall. Application names may
vary in 3rd party firewalls. The file name, however, must match the one
specified.

4 Connecting the J2534 Device

If using a Drew CarDAQ J2534 interface device the Connection must be made
in the following order to ensure correct initialisation of the hardware and
software. Failure to do so may result in errors during the programming
procedure.
1. Connect the J2534 interface device to the vehicle OBDII Diagnostic
Connector and confirm that the interface device is receiving power.
(Refer to the instructions supplied with the interface device).
2. Connect the J2534 interface device to the Ethernet/USB/RS-232* port
on the computer.
* Dependant on type of J2534 interface box, note only ONE connection
is required.
3. Start the Key Reprogramming application.
4. If the J2534 interface device is disconnected from the OBDII Diagnostic
Connector at any time requested by the application, for example to
connect the J2534 interface adaptor, always confirm that the interface
device is receiving power and initialised before continuing.
If using any other interface device, follow the manufacturers instructions to

ensure correct initialisation of the hardware and software.
5 Key Reprogramming Application

The Key Reprogramming application may be started from the desktop shortcut
or the Start menu.

6 J2534 Interface Adaptor

Connection of a J2534 Pass-Thru Device to a Land Rover vehicle.
This vehicle requires a modification to the configuration of the SAE J1962
diagnostic connector while using a J2534 pass-thru device to programme keys.
The modification is only temporary and must be removed immediately after the
use of a pass-thru device is finished.
To achieve the required modification a J2534 Interface Adaptor (part number

DTC4220A) must be connected between the J1962 connector on the vehicle
and the pass-thru device.
