Assessment:

Pre-Assessment: Group discussion- Ask the following questions:


o What is a citizen?
o What does it mean to be a good citizen in our community?
o What does it look like when someone is a good citizen?
o What does it look like when someone is not a good citizen?
Post-Assessment:
o Good Citizens Are/Can/Have Graphic Organizer
Procedures:
1. Introduce Citizenship by first going over the I Can Statement/Essential Question. Explain
that by the end of the unit students will be able to understand and describe the roles
and responsibilities of good citizens, how to identify individuals who show good
citizenship, and how to be a good citizen within their community.
2. Ask the students the Pre-Assessment questions listed above, have them turn and talk
with a buddy to answer.
3. Show the ten ways people in your community can demonstrate good citizenship. Stop
on each example and give examples/non-examples of what that looks/sounds/feels like.
Ask student volunteers to roleplay what it looks/sounds/feels like.
4. At the end, ask students: can you think of any other ways that the citizens of our
community can be good citizens? Have them turn and talk to discuss this.
5. What makes a good citizen Graphic Organizer- can be completed in partners.
6. Have students share their graphic organizers with the class

Ten Ways to Be a Good Citizen
What makes a good citizen? Graphic organizer
ESOL Accommodations:
An ESOL accommodation for this lesson is having on the ten ways people in your
community can demonstrate good citizenship is by having the actions visually displayed
as well as the words and the discussion to go along with them.
