Dynamics of Rigid Bodies: Kinematics Vs Kinetics
Dynamics of Rigid Bodies: Kinematics Vs Kinetics
Dynamics is the branch of mechanics dealing with the study of particles or bodies in motion.
Kinematics vs Kinetics
Kinetics is the branch of mechanics that relates the force acting on a body to its mass and acceleration.
Particle vs Body
The body refers to a system of particles which form an object of appreciable size.
A particle acted upon by an unbalanced forced system has an acceleration in line with and directly
proportional to the resultant of the force system.
Action and reaction forces between two particles are always equal and oppositely directed.
Transmissibility of Vectors
The forces act at different points on a rigid body but have the same magnitude, direction, and line of
action.
Types of Motion
Translation
Centroidal Rotation
If the resultant force, R, passes through the center of gravity, G, the body will be in pure translation.
Centroidal Rotation
If the resultant force does not pass thru a stationary center of gravity, G, the body will spin at G in pure
centroidal rotation.
Plane Motion
If the resultant force does not pass through the center of gravity, G, of a moving body, the motion will
be a combination of translational and centroidal rotation, called plane motion.
D’Alembert’s Principle
The resultant of the external forces applied to a body composed of a system of particles is equivalent to
the vector summation of the effective forces acting on all particles.
