HOW TO BRING THE LIGHT OF MODERNITY TO RURAL AREAS

By Mohan

India is still an agriculture based economy. The path to economic development

passes through the streets of our villages. But it would not be wrong to say that still
these rural streets are without the lights of progress in social and economic terms.

The physical conditions of villages are very pathetic; roads are still in deplorable
condition. Most of the houses are still made up of mud and straw. Electricity is still
a day dream for many of the villages, and for those having electricity it is provided
for few hours.

Many of the social evils are still in practice such as child marriage and Parda
system. Adult illiteracy is also widely found in these villages. Superstition is the
by-product of many of the social evils and practices. Most of the villages are
poverty stricken. They are not aware of the modern gadgets.

We are witnessing the tragic outcomes of poor economic growth and lack of
substantial support system in the wake of failing monsoon or some other natural
calamity. Our farmers are committing suicide and in some parts of the country
their anger is being expressed in terms of maoist movements. The worst part is that
Governments have become the means of crushing these movements with coercion.
In words of Chetan Bhagat, “We are trying to kill symptoms rather than going into
the roots of the disease”.

Apart from Government, it is the duty of NGOs and all big industrialists to adopt
these villages and to make the life of villagers prosper and delightful. Educational
Institutions and Industries should be set up to provide employment and better life
prospects to rural people. Once they are educated and economically sustained,
social evils automatically will disappear and our villages will be enlightened with
the ray of modernity.

Dear Sir
Subject: Education Beyond Classroom Teaching

Through the columns of your esteemed newspaper I would like to highlight the need for
recognizing the talent and skills of students by taking education beyond classroom teaching.

Most schools seem to believe that classroom education is the only stepping stone to success.
In the process, they overlook the other talents and skills of students in music, painting and
sports. The qualities of head and heart such as courage, chivalry, personality, wit and
friendship are neglected.

Selfish mentality and insensitivity need to be uprooted from the society. Schools should
teach students the age-old values of brotherhood, tolerance, team spirit and contentment. Co-
curricular activities have a vital role to play in this regard. The curriculum needs to be
designed accordingly. The education imparted should be practical and relevant to children’s
lives. The examination system should stress more on understanding the subject than merely
cramming facts. Schools should aim for the overall development of children.

I hope this letter creates awareness among the public and the concerned authorities so that
the education system is re-vamped and children start enjoying their studies and their school
and college life.

Yours faithfully

Dear Sir
Subject: Seeking information about admission

I am greatly interested in joining your esteemed academy for the academic year 2017-
18. I am a student of class XII at present and hope to be eligible for your admission
criteria. Even though I have heard quite a lot about your institution from my friends
and advertisements, I would like to clear some of my doubts regarding your admission
procedure.

Kindly let me know when is the right time to apply for the course? Where are the
admission forms available? I hope your institution welcomes payment of fee in
installments. Are there scholarships for eligible students? Is any entrance test
conducted for the same?

I would also like to know further details such as the course duration, tuition and other
fee, study centres and any placement assistance provided after the successful
completion of the course.

I am looking forward to an early reply from your side.

Yours truly
