The key takeaways are that the project aims to establish an AFJROTC program to teach high school students important life skills. It will involve getting approval from the school board and AFJROTC as well as finding instructors and space for the program.

The purpose of the project is to establish an AFJROTC program at a local high school to teach students self-discipline, leadership skills, perseverance, integrity and other important life skills.

Steps that will be taken include getting approval from the school board and AFJROTC, contacting AFJROTC, finding instructors, determining space needs, and conducting a survey of student interest.

Guided STEM Expo Proposal Template - ENGINEERING PROJECT

Is your project an engineering or scientific project?

☑ Engineering: I plan on building and ❏ Scientific: I plan on using the scientific

refining a prototype of a new invention, method to test the impact of an
machine, art project, etc and testing it to independent variable on a dependent
see if it is successful variable through experimentation

CONGRATS! You are using the correct form OOPS! Go get the other form

Investigation Question:

Engineering Method:
What is the purpose/goal of your project? The purpose of this project is to provide a space where
high school students learn self-discipline, leadership skills, perseverance, integrity, and other
important life skills.
How can I create/build a program that improves my school’s community and helps high school
student gain needed skills for the future.

Engineering Design Criteria & Constraints:

Criteria: How will you know your project is successful?

➢ Bring the AFJROTC to a school community (this criteria will probably not be met this year but
hopefully will be met by senior year).

Constraints: What will prevent you from meeting your criteria?

➢ Not enough kids in TAF @ Saghalie wanting to join the program.
➢ If I don’t get the school board’s approval.
➢ If I don’t get the AFJROTC’s approval.

Engineering Preliminary Design:

Preliminary Design & Prototype should include

•Sketches, drawings, models
•Multiple prototypes and critique
•Process of evaluating success

Enough detail should be included so that another group replicate your design

Use the space below to describe your design

Features Explanation

Aspects of my project (not in order):

● Get school board’s approval → In order to bring the AFJROTC program to the school, I would
have to get the school board’s approval. To do this, I will probably type up a proposal explaining
what I am envisioning, why I want to do it, etc. Currently, I don’t know if I will need specifically
TAF @ Saghalie’s approval because I don’t know if we will have enough high school students
interested in the program at TAF @ Saghalie since we have a significantly smaller amount of
high school students than most high schools. If TAF @ Saghalie doesn't work out then I will try to
go to another school district and improve their community by adding the program to a high school
there.
● Contact AFJROTC → I have attempted to email them and call them but that has been
unsuccessful so hopefully I can find a way to successfully contact them.
● Get AFJROTC’s approval → Once I succeed at contacting them, I will need their approval to
move on with my project and start taking bigger steps toward bringing the program to a high
school (hopefully TAF @ Saghalie). I am hoping that they will tell me what the steps I will need to
take are to bring the program to a high school and if it seems feasible in my situation.
● Instructors for the program → At Least one retired officer and NCO (Non-Commissioned Officer)
are assigned to each unit. This is a part that I need support with from the AFJROTC because I
don't know how they want to find them or if I need to or any of that and if I need to find them how
should I approach that? Also, TAF @ Saghalie will have to pay them so I have to make sure I
include that in my proposal to the school board.
● Where will it be held? → There needs to be room in TAF @ Saghalie or the high school that I
decide to do it at so I need to make sure there is space for the program to be held.
● Survey → To see how many high school students at TAF @ Saghalie would possibly be
interested in the AFJROTC program I am going to release a survey that I create and see if it is
enough (I believe I need at least 100).

How will you test your prototype to see if it meets your criteria?

Since I am planning on taking this project all the way to my senior year so it can be my senior

project, the main way I can be successful this year is by doing as much research as possible and

figuring out what some of challenges that I will face are. I hope to get as much done as possible

and I want to make sure I create and release the survey and continue to attempt to contact the

AFJROTC.

Engineering Data Table (What are you building/creating? How will you test whether it’s
successful? What quantitative data will you collect?)
*Include qualitative data (this may include pictures, drawings, observations, etc.)
Title: (the title says something about what the investigation is studying)

What are you measuring? (units)

What are you Trial 1 Trial 2 Trial 3 Average

testing? (units)

Projected Data (Based on your background research and/or simulation, what do you expect
your data to look like? Include your graph(s) here. Axes should include units and be labeled
with the correct variable)

How will you use this data to improve your prototype?

If my predictions are correct, then I will attempt to find a high school in a different school district
that has a higher number of students that’ll possibly be interested in the program

Fill in the following table:

Yes No Yes No

✔ Human Subjects in any way ✔ Controlled or hazardous

(even if it’s just to ask them substances
questions for a survey)

✔ Vertebrate animals (animals ✔ Any microorganisms

with a backbone) (bacteria, viruses, fungi)

✔ Animal tissue ✔ Disease causing agents

✔ DNA

✔ Chemicals not generally found

in a household

I understand that when my project planning proposal is approved I will be expected to host
my exhibit at the STEM EXPO on Saturday, February 4, 2017 at Saghalie School.
