What we did this week:

On Monday, we conducted a lab to see evidence of DNA in our cells by using

calf thymus. The calf thymus was blended with prep buffer and strained (I drew
the short end of the stick and got to use my blender ;). Then I added the thymus
solution to micro tubes and used a centrifuge (spins it around) to create the nuclei
pellet. We then added different chemicals to the pellet to break it down and
extract the DNA strand. There were some groups that weren’t as successful with
this lab as they were with the strawberry DNA extraction lab.
Wednesday, we did a Baby Traits lab where students flipped a coin to
determine if their "baby" received a dominant (heads) or recessive (tails)
trait. They then combined mom and dad's alleles together to determine the
genotype of their offspring for each trait. Once all the traits were determined by
coin flipping, they got to draw their baby with the traits that they flipped for. As
a challenge, their group then partnered with another group, and crossbred both
offspring together to see the likelihood of different traits appearing by using
Punnett squares.
Thursday and Friday we completed an assessment on Punnett Squares and
genetics. Afterwards, they continued working on their Baby Traits Lab and
Challenge.

Have a great weekend!
