Investigations in Science 7 May 13, 2016

What we did this week:

On Monday and Tuesday groups completed a quick fossil lab. Using Play-Doh,
glue, and an object (leaf, flower, acorn, bark, etc.) groups created a mold fossil and
then started the process of creating a cast fossil. A mold is the indentation of the
fossil and the cast is created when it is filled in. The glue filled in the mold and
then sat overnight. The cast was then removed from the Play-Doh. We found that
some objects worked better than others and discussed what conditions need to be
around to create real world fossils.
Wednesday and Friday, we focused on relative dating. Relative dating is the
science of determining the relative order of past events (i.e., the age of an object
in comparison to another), without necessarily determining their absolute age (an
estimate). We looked at different examples of rock layers and determined the
order from oldest to youngest. We used four principles help to determine the
ages.
Along with studying the layers to determine age, we studied how index
fossils can help determine the age of rocks and other fossils. Index fossils are
fossils that were only around during a particular time period and used to help
identify the time period of other fossils. Students practiced determining the age
of the rock layer based on the fossils present.
In between learning about relative dating, we had career day on Thursday.
The speaker we had was amazing. We had the owner of Kangs Black Belt Academy
come and visit, Mark Malakoff and his son, Zach. They are located in Sandy Spring.
We heard about values that they try to teach their students on a daily basis, what
their daily lives are like, and showed us some pretty impressive moves. They
stressed the values: respect, self-confidence, perseverance, stay healthy, selfcontrol, self-discipline, self-defense, and leadership. I have uploaded some
pictures on my class blog.

Announcements:
Students were given a study guide last Thursday for homework. The study
guide is attached. The homework is due on Tuesday for periods 1, 6 and 7. The
study guide is due on Thursday for period 4 due to PARCC testing.
Students should be coming with ear buds/earphones for PARCC testing.
PARCC testing will be on May 16-18 and then again on May 23-25. The first round
of PARCC testing will be focused on math and will occur during periods 3, 4 and 5
(specific to 7th grade students). The next round of PARCC will be testing English
Language Arts and will occur during periods 6 and 7 (specific to 7 th grade
students). I have attached the schedule for PARCC testing
