TRANSPORT PHENOMENA (23126)

FIRST SEMESTER 2018 – PROBLEM SET #3
1. Water is flowing in a cast iron pipe of diameter 0.5 m and absolute roughness 0.26 mm at an average flow velocity of 2 m/s.
Calculate:
a. The energy loss per 100 m.
b. The pressure drop in the pipe per 100 m.

2. Oil is transported through a pipeline at the rate of 5000 bbl/day. The static pressure in the oil at its point of emergence from
one pumping station is 1850 kPa, and at the point of entry to the next pumping station in the line, the pressure is 900 kPa.
The elevation of the second pumping station is 20 m higher than that of the first station. The oil has a density of 770 kg/m3.
One barrel = 42 gallons; 1 gallon = 3.785 x10-3 m3.
Calculate:
a. The friction loss per kilogram of oil pumped.
b. The corresponding dissipation of power.

3. Power is generated by water at 300 K flowing at a volume flow rate of 0.2 m 3/s through a turbine. The water enters the
turbine at a point that is 1 m above the point of exit and the pressure drop over the turbine is 190 kPa. Calculate the rate
at which energy is transferred to the turbine.

4. Oil of density 870 kg/m3 and viscosity 0.8 Pa.s is being pumped from the lower reservoir to the higher reservoir by a pump
with a power rating of 150 kW and an efficiency of 80 %. Calculate the mass flow rate of oil between the tanks if the energy
loss by friction is 120 J/kg.

5. Calculate the flow rate of water at 300 K from Tank 1 to Tank 2.

6. In the figure, water at 300 K is being pumped from the lower to the higher reservoir through a pipe of 0.25 m diameter and
equivalent length 75 m. The absolute roughness of the pipe is 0.0025 m. Calculate the power rating of the pump required
to pump the water at a flow rate of 0.2 m3/s. The efficiency of the pump is 75 %.
7. The pipe in the figure is discharging gasoline to the atmosphere. The static pressure in the gasoline at a point 1000 m from
the point of discharge is 2.5 kPa. Calculate the diameter of pipe of absolute roughness 0.0005 m required for a discharge
rate of 0.1 m3/s. For gasoline: density = 720 kg/m3 and viscosity = 2.92 x10-4 Pa.s.

8. The tank in the figure contains water that is open to the atmosphere.
a. Calculate the initial discharge rate from the tank when it is full of water.
b. To what pressure would the tank have to be pressurized to obtain an initial discharge rate of 0.13 m 3/s?
c. When the tank is open to the atmosphere, how much time is required for the water level to fall from 30 m to 20 m?

9. A pump rated at 1500 W with an efficiency of 60% pumps water at 300 K round a closed loop at a volume flow rate of 0.002
m3/s. Calculate the pressure drop across the pump.
