MILITARY SPECIFICATION
1.1 Scope. This specifi cat ion covers the requirements for two c l a ss e s of
transparent mono lith ic, modified, methyl methacrylate flat stretched sheets that
may be formed into parts h a v i n g superior crack propagation and craze resistance
as a result of proper hot stretching (see 6.4.2).

3.2.2 Formed parts. Parts s h a l l be formed from cut blanks by processes that
consistently produce items meeting the requirements s p e c i f i e d in this document
or on the a p p l i c a b l e contractual document (see 6.2d). The stretched sheet used
to manufacture the parts s h a l l be i d e n t i f i e d to the contracting activity.
3.3 Dimensions and tolerances.
3.5.1 Minor optical defects. The total number of minor optical defects shall
not be more than 1 per square foot. Minor defects i n c l u d e any imbedded particles,
bubbles or scratches w h i c h reduce v i s i b i l i t y through the plastic, and those
localized Imperfections w h i c h cause a variation in angular de vi at io n of more
than 5 minutes w i t h i n a d i s t a n c e of not more than 20 inches on the screen when
tested as specified in 4.6.3. It is not intended that the entire sheet be
q u a n t i t a t i v e l y surveyed for such variation in d e v i a t i o n but that localized
imperfections w h i c h are suspected of b e i n g detrimental be evaluated by means of
this test. Blemishes which do not i n d i v i d u a l l y reduce v i s i b i l i t y through the
p l a s t i c s h a l l be disregarded (not subject to angular deviation) unless they
are grouped in a pattern w h i c h appears to affect deviation. Minor defects w i t h i n
2 inches from the nominal trimmed flat sheet shall be disregarded. Acceptance of
minor defects adjacent to the trimmed edge of formed parts shall be as specified by
the acquisition a ct iv it y (see 6.2i).
3.5.2 Angular deviation. Unless otherwise s p e c i f i e d by the a c q u i s i t i o n
activity, the material s h a l l contain no major defect. Major defects shall be any
variations in the material w h i c h cause angular d e v i a t i o n s e i t h e r side of the
undeviated position In excess of the l i m i t s specified in table I. Angular
deviation of formed parts shall be in accordance w i t h the requirements stated on
the a p p l i c a b l e drawings.

6.2j), maximum marking l ett er h e i g h t s h a l l be 0.125 inch. S p a c i n g between
lines of letters shall not be greater than 0.0625 inch, and the methods used
for marking shall not cause dist ortion of the p l a s t i c surface beyond 0.125
inches from the edges of the markings.
3.11 Instruction sheet for flat sheet material . For flat sheet material,
the manufacturer s h a l l s u b m i t two copies of a dated and coded in st ru ct io n sheet
to the activity responsible for q u a l i f i c a t i o n for approval. The approved
instruction sheet s h a l l be made a v a i l a b l e by the manufacturer to fabricators
and authorized Government inspectors for use at contractor's plants. The
instruction sheet s h a l l contain specific information or references as to the
l i m i t a t i o n s for the material and any precautions necessary in handling, storing,
cutting, d r i l l i n g , machining, forming, cementing, abrading, polishing, and
cleaning. The description of all compounds, materials, and equipment mentioned
therein s h a l l be g i v e n in s uf fi ci en t d e t a i l to permit nonproprietary
procurement. Government specifications shall be used when available.
Proprietary fabrication techniques shall not be included in the instruction
sheets.
3.12 Workmanship. The workmanship sh al l be in accordance with high-grade
commercial practice for h i g h q u a l i t y sheets and formed parts.
4. QUALITY ASSURANCE PROVISIONS
4.3.3 Manufacturer's data. Two copies of the manufacturer's test report and
i ns tr uc tio n sheet s h a l l be submitted w i t h the samples of 4.3.1. The report shall
contain numerical test data, where a p p l i c a b l e , showing that the material submitted
for the q u a l i f i c a t i o n i ns pe ct io n conforms to the requirements of this
s p e c i f i c a ti on . In a d d i t io n, manufacturer's substantiating data for materials
(see 3.2) s ha ll be requested at this time.

PACKAGING
5.1 Preservation. Preservation s h a l l consist of a protective covering on
both sides of the p l a s t i c sheet. Parts s h a l l be preserved in accordance with
MIL-P-116 and protectively covered. The protective covering shall be an adhered
paper or film that can be r e a d i l y removed without injury or damage to the
p l a s t i c surface. The covering s h a l l protect the surfaces from scratches or
damage d u r i n g shipment.
5.2 Packing. Packing s h a l l be l e v e l А, В or Commercial, as s p e c i f i e d (see
6.2.f). Containers s h a l l be m a i n t a i n the p l a s t i c sheet or part in its
original condition. A l l internal loads s h a l l be supported to avoid damage to
surfaces by cleats. An instruction sheet shall be i n c l u d e d in each i n d i v i d u a l
exterior container (see 3.11). A l l p l a s t i c sheets s h a l l be packed as far as
practicable by size and thickness.
