2.5 Service Provided

 Types of Pile Driving

 Pile Install Method
 Engineering testing
 Provide of Machinery and Equipment

2.5.1 Types of Pile Driving

1)Concrete Pile

Pre-cast pre-stressed concrete piles are commonly used in the pile market. We drive
concrete piles on more than ninety percent of our jobs. The pre-cast pile is one of the
most cost effective pile types due to material cost, custom pile lengths, and availability.
Recently we had involved in Pile Jack-In Technology which using Hydraulic Jack-In
Machine.

 The cost of concrete pile varies based on design loads, dimensions, and length,
but typically a concrete pile is more cost effective.

11
 After the completion of an indicator program pile lengths can be customized to
site specific soil conditions prior to ordering production pile avoiding costly
material waste.

 Concrete piles can be ready to drive in most cases in fourteen days, as opposed to
steel piles which can require a mill rolling taking six to eight weeks.

2)Bored Pile

 Suitable for cohesive soils. Applications include contiguous, secant and

continuous retaining walls, vertical drains soakaways and pre-boring.

 Heave situations can be accommodated with permanent sleeves, void formers, and
a choice of slip-plane liners.

 Piles can be installed through adverse ground conditions using temporary casings
or bentonite.

3)Micro Pile

 Also known as “Pin piles” or “Minipiles”, Micropiles are small diameter high
capacity pipe piles.

 They are typically specified in short threaded lengths and installed through
various drilling techniques.

 The addition of grout and threaded bar reinforce the pile in lateral, tensile, and
compressive loading.

4)Sheet Pile

Sheet piling is a manufactured construction product with a mechanical connection “interlock” at

both ends of the section. These mechanical connections interlock with one another to form a
continuous wall of sheeting. Sheet pile applications are typically designed to create a rigid barrier
for earth and water, while resisting the lateral pressures of those bending forces.

The shape or geometry of a section lends to the structural strength. In addition, the soil in which
the section is driven has numerous mechanical properties that can affect the performance. Sheet
piling is classified in two construction applications, permanent and temporary. A permanent

12
application is “stay-in-place” where the sheet pile wall is driven and remains in the ground. A
temporary application provides access and safety for construction in a confined area.

5)H-pile

H-Piles are dimensionally square structural beams that are driven in the ground for deep
foundation applications. Most soils at or near surface do not have the mechanical
properties to support large buildings. As you go deeper into the earth’s geology, there are
layers (bearing strata) capable of doing so. H-Piles are manufactured and designed to
transfer structural loads to these good bearing soils.

H-Piles are also used in conjunction with sheet piles to add lateral stiffness and bending
resistance where loads exceed the capacity of sheet piles alone. (Peck Chew Piling
Administrator. 2018)

14
2.5.2 Pile Installation Method

1)DROPPING WEIGHT (Hydraulic Hammer)

If installation is to be carried out using pile-hammer, then the following factors should be
taken in to consideration:

 The size and the weight of the pile.

 The driving resistance which has to be overcome to achieve the design penetration.
 The available space and head room on the site.
 The availability of cranes.
 The noise restrictions which may be in force in the locality.

2) JACKING SYSTEM (YZY HYDRAULIC JACK-IN MACHINE)

 The hydraulic jack in piling system utilizes a patented hydraulic grip jacking technique in
which piles are injected into the ground at a maximum pile jacking capacity of 800 tones.
 Due to the fact that only the most minimal emission of noise, vibration and pollution
occurs during the pile injection process, this system meets even the most stringent
environmental protection requirements around the world.
 It also has many other advantages, such as a superior mobility, an excellent jacking
ability, high levels of operational accuracy and a 100% quality check on all injected piles.
 Currently, we have hydraulic jacking machines of various capacities ranging from 160
tones to 600 tones.

3) VIBRATION (VIBRO MACHINE)

 Vibratory hammers are usually electrically powered or hydraulically powered and

consists of contra-rotating eccentric masses within a housing attaching to the pile head.
 The amplitude of the vibration is sufficient to break down the skin friction on the sides of
the pile.
 Vibratory methods are best suited to sandy or gravelly soil for installation of sheet pile.

4)PRE-BORING

The method is especially effective on soft ground and enables to install a variety of bored
piles of various diameters that are able to penetrate a multitude of soil conditions. Still,
for successful operation of rotary auger the soil must be reasonably free of tree roots,
cobbles, and boulders, and it must be self-supporting.

During operation little soil is brought upwards by the auger that a lateral stress is
maintained in the soil and voiding or excessive loosening of the soil minimize. However,
15
if the rotation of the auger and the advance of the auger is not matched, resulting in
removal of soil during drilling-possibly leading to collapse of the side of the hole. (Peck
Chew Piling Administrator. 2018)

16
2.5.3 Engineering Testing

1)Maintain Load Test (MLT)

Also known as pile static load test. Pile load test are usually carried out that one or some
of the following reasons are fulfilled:
 To obtain back-figured soil data that will enable other piles to be designed.
 To confirm pile lengths and hence contract costs before the client is committed to
overall job costs.
 To counter-check results from geotechnical and pile driving formulae
 To determine the load-settlement behavior of a pile, especially in the region of the
anticipated working load that the data can be used in prediction of group
settlement.

The maintained load test (MLT), Kent ledge or adjacent tension piles or soil anchors are
used to provide a reaction for the test load applied by jacking(s) placed over the pile
being tested. (Peck Chew Piling Administrator. 2018)

Picture below showing Maintain Load Test

2) HIGH STRAIN DYNAMIC PILE TESTING

High Strain Dynamic Pile Testing is used to provide data on strain or force and
acceleration of a pile under an impact force. The data is used to evaluate the bearing
capacity and the structural integrity of the pile as well as hammer performance, pile
stresses and soil characteristics, such as soil damping coefficients and quake values. Pile
integrity, which is accurately evaluated on site, would allow the engineer to accept or
reject the pile immediately.

Actual driving stresses and hammer performance data obtained during pile monitoring
can be used to reduce the risk of pile damage. Piles no longer have to be overdriven
resulting in lower foundation cost.

Random testing of installed piles would also provide the design

engineers/contractors/client a measure of confidence in the foundation, as he would

17
probably not be at the site all the time to witness the pile installation. It is also to ensure
that the installed piles can function as designed. (Peck Chew Piling Administrator. 2018)

In this part I will describe format and software used by this company to ensure
understanding is always there. Normally, we will use Microsoft Excel, AutoCAD,
Microsoft Word, and Microsoft Project to complete our construction, measurement and
claiming job.

3.3 JOB SCOPE

3.3.1 INTRODUCTION

This chapter will describe tasks I have been carried out in each of projects, project scope
that I had involve and also the explain in details of the project.

3.3.2 Project Phase 1 Dialog 1E

3.3.2.1 Introduction

The Overall view of site 1E Phase 1A

Phase 1B Phase 1C

22
PENGERANG INDEPENDENT TERMINALS, Phase 1 of PDT has a storage
capacity of approximately 1.3 million cubic meters (m3) on 150 acres of reclaimed land,
together with six deep-water berths at a cost of RM2.0billion. It has the capability to
handle the storage, blending and distribution of crude oil, petroleum, chemical and
petrochemical feedstock products, and by- product. (Dialog. 2018)

Phase 1 project is owned by Pengerang Independent Termainals Sdn Bhd (PITSB), a joint
venture between DIALOG(46%), Royal VOPAK(44%) and S.S.I (10%). It has been fully
completed and commenced operations in the second quarters of calendar year 2014.
PITSB welcomed its very first Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC) on 16 March 2015. To
date it has welcomed more than 1100 vessels. (Dialog. 2018)

Phase 1 has the capacity to develop an additional 1 million m3 should the requirement
arise, as it has land available for further expansion. So our company will drive pile under
the tank in order to construct foundation to support the load of the tank. (Dialog. 2018)

3.3.2.2 Task involve

First and foremost, the first things that I had do for this project is piling records scanning.
Although piling record scanning seen to be easy, but it is actually very important for us,
when there is any problem to that particular pile, so the scanning of piling record can be
used for refer as the original copy of piling record will send back to the client.

I also helping in key in the summary of piling record into claim summary, the data key by
me will allow the quantity surveyor to prepare bill of quantities and prepare claim. Other
than that, I also prepared Request for information (RFI) and send to the Dialog office.
The RFI is important as it act as a permit to allow construction work in progress. One RFI
can valid for three days.

I had prepare the daily report and mark on plan every day, daily report will be use to
ensure the quantity of pile that had been drive on the previous day and the total quantity
of pile that had been drive. I also do the mark on plan stated the penetration, date of drive,
set, and total length of pile in the drawing to ensure no missed of driven pile.

23
3.3.3 Project P28B, Rapid Pengerang

3.3.3.1 Introduction

Figure above show the overall view of Rapid Pengerang

Malaysian oil and gas company Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas) is developing a
refinery and petrochemical integrated development project (RAPID) and other associated
facilities in Pengerang, Southern Johor, Malaysia, through a project called Pengerang
Integrated Complex (PIC). (Hydrocarbons Technology. 2018)

Launched in May 2012, PIC is part of the larger Pengerang Integrated Petroleum
Complex (PIPC) proposed by the Johor state government. Total investment for the PIPC
project is approximately MYR97bn ($27bn), of which the RAPID project costs
MYR57bn ($16bn) and the associated facilities require MYR40bn ($11bn).
(Hydrocarbons Technology. 2018)

A feasibility study along with site topographical survey and soil investigation work for
the project were completed in October 2011. Front-end engineering design (FEED) and
an environmental impact assessment studies have also been completed. (Hydrocarbons
Technology. 2018)

In April 2014, the Petronas board of directors approved the final investment decision
(FID) for the RAPID project. The refinery project is anticipated to be completed by early

24
2019. It is expected to employ 70,000 workers during construction and generate 4,000
new jobs upon completion. (Hydrocarbons Technology. 2018)

3.3.3.2 Task involve

To enter the site I had going for induction to get the site entering pass. Everyday, I will
send the request for inspection (RFI) to CCSM office. The RFI is important as it act as a
permit to allow construction work in progress. One RFI can valid for three days. Other
than that, I also attend safety meeting and site meeting to discuss the site issue and issue
on document about where we need to do correction.

At about week 12 and 13 I had been ask by my employer to go to the site for inspection
and also experienced the construction work. I had learned more about construction of
piling works. For example I had know that how the jack in machine jack the pile into the
ground. Other than that, I also help to prepare the piling record which recording the
penetration of pile the total length of pile and also record pile break when breaking
occurred. When the pile was set, I will take the photo for the pile set reading on gauge.
This data will allow me to prepare a summary of piling record to the office to prepare
claim.

While construction work in progress, there is a land obstruction which cause by rock.
These rock causes the pile to break easily, so the employer of mine had told me to
estimate the additional cost that will be cause by the obstruction. While removal of
obstruction work is complete, I also help the surveyor to repeg the pile point.

25
3.3.4 Project Metex

3.3.4.1 Introduction

Figure above shows the site of Metex

Project Metex is a project that construct polis immigration, bungalow, hall, and office
which located at Kampung Lepau in Johor Bahru.

3.3.4.2 Task invole

For this project I had inspect the Pile Driving Analyzer (PDA) testing of piling with my
colleague. The Pile Driving Analyzer (PDA) system is the most widely employed system
for Dynamic Load Testing and Pile Driving Monitoring in the world. High Strain
Dynamic Load Tests, also called PDA tests, assess the capacity of several piles in a
single day. Pile Driving Analyzer systems also evaluate shaft integrity, driving stresses,
and hammer energy when monitoring installation.

Other than that, I help in key in the summary of piling record into claim summary. This
would allow Quantity Surveyor to prepare claim to the client. I also help in prepare
transmittal for client acknowledgement.

Piling record scanning is also done by me to have a backup, so when problems occurred
on that particular pile, the piling record which had been scanned can be used as a
reference.

26
3.3.5 New office Pengerang PCP

3.3.5.1 Introduction

There is a new office which have a total of four level are being construct at bukit saga
near the area of Pengerang for our own company.

3.3.5.2 Task Involve

Because I am studying in Quantity Surveyor, my employer had bring me to have a site

visit, and I had the opportunity to prepare a schedule of work programme by using
Microsoft Project software.

3.3.6 Forest City

3.3.6.1 Introduction

Forest City real estate development in Gelang Patah, to be graced by Malaysia Prime
Minister Najib Razak and Sultan of Johor, Sultan Ibrahim Ismail. Forest City is expected
to create more than 220,000 jobs for the locals by the year 2035. Forest City, set to
be Southeast Asia’s largest mixed-use green development is now open to public for
previews and bookings, and have obtained many supportive incentives from the Federal
Government of Malaysia. Condominiums and high-rise coastal residences on Island 1 of
Forest City are exceptionally. (Forest City Johor 碧桂园森林城市. 2018)

3.3.6.2 Task involve

In this project I had help the contract department to translate the contract document. Due
to the contractor are came from China, the contract document was in Chinese and I had
help them to translate the contract document from Chinese to Malay.

27
4.0 Conclusion

After these sixteen (16) weeks of internship in Peck Chew Piling (M) Sdn Bhd, I
have gained a lot of benefits and experience. Those knowledge and experience I gained
will helped me in future career and do better in my future work in construction.

Internship program give a foundation for us before entering to real-life working

environment. During the internship, my understanding of responsibilities of Quantity
Surveyor had increased and what is going to be when working in the Construction Firm.
It gave me a clearer idea to decide my future career path after the graduation.

Apart from that, the entire practical thing happen at work can let me recall back the
knowledge that I had learnt in university. However, through this internship period, I also
learn a lots of skills which are not taught in class such as time management, self-
discipline, work ethics, well managing the relationship between colleagues and others
details in construction.

Last but not least, I can say that I have gained a lot of benefits through this internship
and got to work with experience seniors makes whole training period goes smoothly and
give me a lots of unforgettable memories.
