Creep Test in Polymer

Creep testing involves applying a constant load to a material sample over time while monitoring deformation. There are three stages of creep: primary, secondary, and tertiary. Primary creep occurs rapidly at first as the material deforms elastically, then the rate decreases. In secondary creep, the deformation rate is relatively uniform. During tertiary creep, the rate accelerates until failure. Creep testing is important for determining time-dependent material properties, limits, and suitable applications depending on temperature and stress conditions.

What Creep Mean ?
Creep
 Creep is the time dependent deformation of materials to move
slowly or deform permanently under influence of mechanical stress.
 It is generally found that creep in materials starts when the
temperature is >0.3 to 0.4 Tm .
Why creep test is important ?

 .Through a creep test ,we know the creep limit ,a specific

range of materials.
 Scientists are able to determine the temperature and
interval in which an object will be disturbed once exposed
to the load.
 Measures dimensional change accurately.
 Identify specific materials for specific application.
 The creep test is usually employed to determine the
minimum creep rate.
Creep test set-up

 As seen in the above set up, the apparatus consists of loading mechanism
which is balanced over a lever.
 The specimen is kept between the loading arrangements in between furnace.
 The strain in the furnace is observed by telescopic arrangement.
 For all variety of loadings the strain is observed and plotted against time.
Creep curve

There are fourth portion of the curve.

1st portion : “o” to point “A” initial extension, this reason
Known as elastic reason.
2nd portion : “A” to point “B” period of primary
2
creep.
3rd portion : “B” to point “C” period of Secondary
-1 -1
creep.
4th Portion :“C” to point “D” period of Tertiary creep.
Stage of creep
Creep deformation occurs in three main
stages.
Primary creep: Starts at a rapid rate and slow
with time
Secondary Creep : Has a relatively uniform rate.

Tertiary creep : The last stage of creep when

the object that is being subjected to pressure
is going to reach its breaking point. In this stage
the object’s continuously increases until the
object breaks.
