locations to interact via two-way video and audio transmissions simultaneously. It has also been called
'visual collaboration' and is a type of groupware. Videoconferencing can enable individuals in faraway
places to have meetings on short notice. Time and money that used to be spent in travelling can be used to
have short meetings. Technology such as VOIP can be used in conjunction with desktop video
conferencing to enable low-cost face-to-face business meetings without leaving the desk, especially for
businesses with widespread offices
L&T's Heavy Engineering Division has multi-point group video conferencing systems at Mumbai,
Vadodara and Hazira. These systems are capable of working simultaneously on IP and ISDN. A high-end
document camera with an electronic whiteboard facilitates sharing of data and printed documents online.
Two TV screens allow simultaneous viewing of the participants as well as discussion material. The
systems are also capable of conducting simultaneous video conferencing between four different locations.
This system helps L&T in the following ways:
Helps their business form profitable relationships quickly and efficiently without the employees
leaving their place of work
enables individuals in different branches/offices of L&T to have meetings on short notice
Saves time and money for the company
Enables all the employees to participate in the meetings inspite of long distances
Data center: A data center is a facility used to house computer systems and associated components, such
as telecommunications and storage systems. It generally includes redundant or backup power supplies,
redundant data communications connections, environmental controls (e.g., air conditioning, fire
suppression) and security devices.
The main purpose of a data center is running the applications that handle the core business and
operational data of the organization. Such systems may be proprietary and developed internally by the
organization, or bought from enterprise software vendors. Such common applications are ERP and CRM
systems. Often these applications will be composed of multiple hosts, each running a single component.
Common components of such applications are databases, file servers, application servers, middleware,
and various others. Data centers are also used for offsite backups. Companies may subscribe to backup
services provided by a data center. This is often used in conjunction with backup tapes
Facilitating communications: Using a network, people can communicate efficiently and easily
via email, instant messaging, chat rooms, telephone, video telephone calls, and video
conferencing
Sharing hardware: In a networked environment, each computer on a network may access and
use hardware resources on the network, such as printing a document on a shared network printer
Sharing files, data, and information: In a network environment, authorized user may access
data and information stored on other
computers on the network. The
capability of providing access to data
and information on shared storage
devices is an important feature of
many networks
Sharing software: Users connected to a
network may run application programs on
remote computers
Information preservation: Helps in storing information and keeping it readily available for use
Speed up: Sharing of data becomes faster and more efficient
Group wise mail system: GroupWise is a robust, dependable messaging and collaboration system that
connects you to your universal mailbox anytime and anywhere. GroupWise can operate on a number of
server and workstation platforms. Server platforms include NetWare, Linux, and Windows.
Fire wall / check points: firewall is a part of a computer system or network that is designed to
block unauthorized access while permitting authorized communications. It is a device or set of devices
that is configured to permit or deny network transmissions based upon a set of rules and other criteria.
Firewalls can be implemented in either hardware or software, or a combination of both.
Firewalls are frequently used to prevent unauthorized Internet users from accessing private networks
connected to the Internet, especially intranets. All messages entering or leaving the intranet pass
through the firewall, which inspects each message and blocks those that do not meet the specified
security criteria. L&T use for blocking unauthorized sites and users services using ACL policies. (An
ACL specifies which users or system processes are granted access to objects, as well as what
operations are allowed on given objects)
VPN is virtual private network that uses a public telecommunication infrastructure such as the
Internet to provide remote offices or individual users with secure access to their organization's
network. It aims to avoid an expensive system of owned or leased lines that can be used by only one
organization. L&T Uses Encryption and
Authentication for VPN to make secure
tunnels, to pass information in a
secure manner.
Symantec Securities: L&T uses Norton Symantec Anti-Virus Protection to safeguard their systems
It also uses:
Authentication and encryption for wireless mobile users
Bio metric securities for data center
Password policies for all the users and work stations
Sharepoint portal
It is an integrated suite of server capabilities that can help improve organizational effectiveness by
providing comprehensive content management and enterprise search, accelerating shared business
processes, and facilitating information-sharing across boundaries for better business insight.
