Video conferencing: Is a set of interactive telecommunication technologies which allow two or more

locations to interact via two-way video and audio transmissions simultaneously. It has also been called
'visual collaboration' and is a type of groupware. Videoconferencing can enable individuals in faraway
places to have meetings on short notice. Time and money that used to be spent in travelling can be used to
have short meetings. Technology such as VOIP can be used in conjunction with desktop video
conferencing to enable low-cost face-to-face business meetings without leaving the desk, especially for
businesses with widespread offices

L&T's Heavy Engineering Division has multi-point group video conferencing systems at Mumbai,
Vadodara and Hazira. These systems are capable of working simultaneously on IP and ISDN. A high-end
document camera with an electronic whiteboard facilitates sharing of data and printed documents online.
Two TV screens allow simultaneous viewing of the participants as well as discussion material. The
systems are also capable of conducting simultaneous video conferencing between four different locations.
This system helps L&T in the following ways:

 Helps their business form profitable relationships quickly and efficiently without the employees
leaving their place of work
 enables individuals in different branches/offices of L&T to have meetings on short notice
 Saves time and money for the company
 Enables all the employees to participate in the meetings inspite of long distances
Data center: A data center is a facility used to house computer systems and associated components, such
as telecommunications and storage systems. It generally includes redundant or backup power supplies,
redundant data communications connections, environmental controls (e.g., air conditioning, fire
suppression) and security devices.

The main purpose of a data center is running the applications that handle the core business and
operational data of the organization. Such systems may be proprietary and developed internally by the
organization, or bought from enterprise software vendors. Such common applications are ERP and CRM
systems. Often these applications will be composed of multiple hosts, each running a single component.
Common components of such applications are databases, file servers, application servers, middleware,
and various others. Data centers are also used for offsite backups. Companies may subscribe to backup
services provided by a data center. This is often used in conjunction with backup tapes

The data center of L&T has following features:

 Biometric Security (finger print access)

 Approx 40 servers
 UPS for 24*7*365 power back up
 IBM Blade Centre
 Fully air conditioned
 State-of-the-art Data Centre with
scalability to grow as business grows
 Email, SMS alerts for all critical
parameters
 Disaster Management – FM200,
VESDA
 Redundancy in critical components
like Power, Cooling
 Packaged AC for better performance
 Security – CCTV, Access Control
Computer network: A computer network, often simply referred to as a network, is a group of computers
and devices interconnected by communications channels that facilitate communications among users and
allows users to share resources. Networks may be classified according to a wide variety of characteristics.
A computer network allows sharing of resources and information among interconnected devices.

A state-of-the-art communications network facilitates speedy communication. All computer resources

available with the Strategic Business Units and Services Units are interlinked to form a Local Area
Network (LAN). Design and projects offices in Mumbai, Faridabad, Bangalore, Vadodara and Hazira are
linked to other offices through L&T network. Project sites are linked to design and project offices through
VSATs, Leased Lines, ISDN and wireless links, achieving virtual single office operation. The
communication network at Powai is supported by 10 Gigabit backbone on fibre optic Campus Area
Network and at Vadodara by 1000 Mbps Campus Fibre Optic Backbone with high-speed wireless links.

Using a sturdy computer network, gives L&T the following benefits:

 Facilitating communications: Using a network, people can communicate efficiently and easily
via email, instant messaging, chat rooms, telephone, video telephone calls, and video
conferencing
 Sharing hardware: In a networked environment, each computer on a network may access and
use hardware resources on the network, such as printing a document on a shared network printer
 Sharing files, data, and information: In a network environment, authorized user may access
data and information stored on other
computers on the network. The
capability of providing access to data
and information on shared storage
devices is an important feature of
many networks
 Sharing software: Users connected to a
network may run application programs on
remote computers
 Information preservation: Helps in storing information and keeping it readily available for use
 Speed up: Sharing of data becomes faster and more efficient

Group wise mail system: GroupWise is a robust, dependable messaging and collaboration system that
connects you to your universal mailbox anytime and anywhere. GroupWise can operate on a number of
server and workstation platforms. Server platforms include NetWare, Linux, and Windows.

Key Features include:

 Mail box (Online, Catch & Remote modes)
 News groups
 Scheduling groups and posted items
 Calendar
 Address Book (Import/ Export features)
 Mail Archival
 Sending Secure Message (S/MIME)
 Creating & working with documents

Fire wall / check points: firewall is a part of a computer system or network that is designed to
block unauthorized access while permitting authorized communications. It is a device or set of devices
that is configured to permit or deny network transmissions based upon a set of rules and other criteria.
Firewalls can be implemented in either hardware or software, or a combination of both.
Firewalls are frequently used to prevent unauthorized Internet users from accessing private networks
connected to the Internet, especially intranets. All messages entering or leaving the intranet pass
through the firewall, which inspects each message and blocks those that do not meet the specified
security criteria. L&T use for blocking unauthorized sites and users services using ACL policies. (An
ACL specifies which users or system processes are granted access to objects, as well as what
operations are allowed on given objects)

VPN is virtual private network that uses a public telecommunication infrastructure such as the
Internet to provide remote offices or individual users with secure access to their organization's
network. It aims to avoid an expensive system of owned or leased lines that can be used by only one
organization. L&T Uses Encryption and
Authentication for VPN to make secure
tunnels, to pass information in a
secure manner.

Symantec Securities: L&T uses Norton Symantec Anti-Virus Protection to safeguard their systems

It also uses:
 Authentication and encryption for wireless mobile users
 Bio metric securities for data center
 Password policies for all the users and work stations
Sharepoint portal

KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

Benefits

 Maximum Availability - Because every minute an application is down or not responding

properly can cost an organization thousands of dollars, deploying the BIG-IP system with
Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server 2003 is essential for providing organizations with
business critical availability. Through the use of its advanced health checking
capabilities, the BIG-IP device can recognize when a resource is unavailable or under-
performing and direct traffic to an available resource. With the BIG-IP product, all of
your applications can achieve 99.999% uptime, while reducing operational complexity
and costs.
 Increased Server Efficiency - Because version 9 of the BIG-IP system, with its TMOS
engine, is a full proxy, it can optimize any end point that connects through the system. As
a full broker of communications, the BIG-IP system optimizes communication for every
single end device communicating through it. This optimization can take place up and
down the entire stack, from the transport layer to the protocol and application layers,
taking the workload off of the servers for increased server efficiency. The BIG-IP
device’s TCP Express optimization also dramatically improves the reliability of WAN
communications. Dial-up users connecting to Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server
experience connection reliability improvements of more than 40% while timeout errors
are reduced by greater than 80%.
 Enhanced Security - The BIG-IP device includes numerous security features that
enforce, fortify, and accelerate the secure delivery of applications and Web services. It
provides the capability for deploying more stringent access control, secure
administration, and helps resist common attacks, such as Denial of Service and Dynamic
Denial of Service.
 Simple Scalability - The BIG-IP system provides a highly scalable solution that allows
enterprises to meet growing organizational demands on Web and application resources. If
one service is nearing capacity, scaling it is as simple as adding another instance of the
service to your network and then to the BIG-IP load balancing pool. The BIG-IP solution
allows organizations to scale their applications horizontally, providing considerable cost
savings.
 Secure Access from Anywhere - F5 Networks’ FirePass controller enables enterprises to
provide secure, reliable and intuitive remote access to corporate applications and data
using standard web browser technology. This award-winning SSL VPN solution provides
complete cross platform support without resource-draining client software installation
and confi guration or changes to server-side applications. FirePass controller extends
support for any IP application to Apple Macintosh, PocketPC and Linux clients, in
addition to Microsoft Windows, and expands client and application security for web,
email and fi le application access. It also offers the only open API and SDK that enables
third party application vendors to build seamless, secure remote access into their client
applications.
SQL is a declarative computer language for use with relational databases. Interestingly, many of
the original SQL features were inspired by, but violated, the semantics of the relational
model and its tuple calculus realization. Recent extensions to SQL achieved relational
completeness, but have worsened the violations

ECRM

Running a successful business boils down to one single thing at the end of the day – keeping
your customers happy. Understanding customers becomes a useful tool in gaining critical
competitive advantage in this new paradigm. That’s where customer knowledge comes in.

It begins with capturing the right information about both prospective and existing customers.
This information is then analyzed to understand customer behavior, needs and spot patterns. The
next step is to create the right message for the right customers and then communicate through the
right medium.

ECRM specialize in working with clients’ marketing teams to capture, disseminate and act on
customer knowledge. By act, we are talking about the entire communication bouquet including
customize direct marketing campaigns spanning all the interactive media. We also leverage our
technological expertise in building customer extranets with various functionalities.

Last, but by no means the least, we firmly believe in a metrics driven approach, where
continuous monitoring and measurement of ROI are not just ‘value added services’; they form an
integral part of our solution itself.

This is a web based Sales Force Automation tool that helps you to focus on un-covered
customer-revenue opportunities that are not possible in a manual sales process. The architecture
of the product brings your Customers / Sales Teams / Channel partners into a single centralized
structure. This will help you overcome the stumbling block of remote accessibility of
information across your organization. Its easy to use web based interface, faster deployment and
effective implementation will streamline your sales process quickly and in a cost effective way.
It records enquiries, follow ups, complaints and details of any other interaction with the client
which helps to build and maintain life-long relation with the customer.

A CRM (Customer Relationship Management) or customer care module is to provide an
