Building Rapport And Confidentiality

Building Rapport is the process of helping a person minimize their prehensed differences

between themselves and yourself. This can be accomplished by finding common interests with

the mentor and the mentee. It is said that rapport is a occurs at a subconscious level and there

are a few ways to help build your Rapport with any given mentee. You can build rapport by

asking the mentee questions about themself, you can help them feel important in group

situations by giving each person their own special assignment. Another way is too remember a

mentees name and use it often.

The first step to building rapport is to be helpful. Help the mentee with assignments and

give helpful feedback.don't just give them the answer but offer to help them look for it and steer

them in the right direction. And if they get the wrong answer the first time don't scold them or

anything like that instead, give them feedback on how it would be seen that their answer was

right but also how it was flawed. It is important to be kind to all of the mentees and respect

them.

Another way Rapport can be achieved is by giving the menties specific roles in a group

project for example let's say there's a group of four students Jimmy, Tom, Jill, and Jon. to help

them feel important to the cause give them their own specific roles like if they were writing a

paper about world war two Jimmy could look up the total estimated death toll throughout the war

and right a paragraph about it. You could then give Jill the role of finding out the total amount of

money spent between the U.S and Germany throughout the war and have her right a

paragraph about it and when they have completed the paper congratulate each person and

make them feel like their part was crucial for the paper in order to get an A.

The next way to build Rapport is to remember your mentees names. When you confront

a mentee use their name not hey you person over there. When you engage in a conversation

with a mentee use their name often for example you could say “so John do u like to go hunting.”

and if they say yes i do you could say “oh that's sweet John”. And when you are talking to them

you should always ask them questions about themself and use engaging questions. Like what

do you do in your free time or what's your favorite animal. And also tell them about yourself so

they feel comfortable with you. And therefore your relationship with be better with your mentees

and they will be more willing to come to you when they either need help or have a question that

needs to be answered. Another thing is your Ego don't let your ego get the better of you and

dont act intimidating don't act like your the big guy on the block.

The next part is confidentiality, confidentiality is the information that you and any given

mentee talk about. This information that is shared with you is required to be kept confidential

unless it has to do with harming themselves or others or if they are showing signs of being

abused or neglected. Then if it has to do with neglect or you are told that they want to hurt

themselves or others you are required to share the information. This can happen if a person

tells you that they are going to do harm to themselves or others. most of the united require a

counseler to report child abuse and or neglect. And in rare cases a court but it can be done and

in most ethics codes state that counselors are required to follow court orders.
