REVITALIZATION OF KURUPAM
MARKET IN VISAKHAPATNAM CITY

towers have been made as
entrance to Kurupam market.
The market was donated by
Raja Vyricherla Veerabhadra
Raju of Kurupam to
Vizagapatam Municipality to
commemorate the coronation
of King Edward VII.

The structure is Hexagonal


minarets of stone for
basement and entire top portion made of Brick and lime mortar, with
wooden battens for support,
There are some steel rods and clamps for roof support, The clock on
both sides was installed,
There are two vertical opening slits on the minarets for lighting which
were fitted with glass in wooden frame. Three cornices are present on
these minarets at specific intervals top are semi circular domes with
spikes. This was just 100m from old town main road. The market shops
surrounding a open space which served for public movement. Basing
on this the main road also started to have lot of shops in the ground
floors, the buildings on main road are of two storeys. Most of the shops
are of jewellers, This is the actual place to buy jewellery for about 100
years and still goes on, there are some shops such as sweets and
bakery, medical & textiles came up due to demands as more crowed
pouring in.

There is a town hall 200 m opposite side of the main road.
Now it is serving as a Visakhapatnam club for some private organisation.

There is a temple of Kanakamahalakshmi approximately 450m same


side of town hall. Thus this place has a significance Value.
During the festivals and events this street is very densely crowded.

Right side way leads to town hall.
The path to Market entrance also has developed with road side vendors
Still now its lively and working.

From inside to main road

The structure served as the focal point in attracting the public for vending and
gathering. The towers has been dismantled on sad day of November 20 th of
2013, it has been bulldozed 20feet below ground. The Historical representation
of the town area as been gone forever.

It has also made a deep impact in the hearts of the many Vizagties who were
dwelling since childhood days in these areas.
