Myself Hi! My name is Allison Kaltenbrun. This video

is going to be detailing my journey throughout
ENC 1102 by looking at my goals, successes,
and struggles this semester. ENC 1102 is my
second college writing class that I have taken
here at UCF. Because I took ENC 1101, I
already had an idea of what expectations
come with college level courses. Even though
I had already taken a college writing course, I
was confident that ENC 1102 was going to
challenge me and help me grow as a writer.

As for any class, there were many course

goals that were set to accomplish throughout
the semester. All of these course goals
related to students developing skills related to
understanding texts, applying concepts,
writing, and revising. There was one course
goal that stood out to me the most and this
was “ Strengthen students’ abilities to engage
in a meaningful, dynamic, and inquiry-based
research process”. This goal focused on
research and through our assignments we
accomplished this. I also set personal goals
→ back to me for myself. Of course I wanted to earn good
grades, but I also wanted to come out of my
final writing class with a deeper
understanding of writing and communication.

Pictures of flowers & Growth A metaphor that I could use for this semester
is a garden. As my final writing class comes
to an end, I feel that I have only gained more
knowledge and expanded my skill set.
Although I will not necessarily take another
English course, I have gained skills that I will
be able to apply in and out of school. I feel as
if I have definitely grown as a writer and a
student.
At the beginning of the semester, Dr. Dieterle
explained to us that all of our projects would
be focused on one research topic. Going into
this, I was worried about picking a topic that I
would have to stick with for the whole
semester. After much consideration, I decided
to focus on the Relay for Life community.
Relay for Life is funded by the American
Cancer Society. It is fundraiser that aims to
raise money for cancer research and patients.
This whole semester was focused on writing
and communication within a community.
Considering this, I decided to focus on the
Relay for Life Facebook page, ultimately
looking at the different ways the page
communicates and interacts with the
community.
My first assignment was the Research
Proposal. I felt that I did a decently good job
on this assignment. Here I described the
Relay for Life Facebook page, and explained
a little bit about the writing and
communication within it. When I got my grade
back, a B, I was not surprised. I read Dr.
Dieterle’s comments, which mentioned how I
jumped around quite a bit and had my ideas
spread out, and went back to make some
changes.

When revising, I saw many spots where I

could have been more specific. I moved
similar ideas into the same paragraphs and
even added some extra ideas for further
research at the end to earn points back for a
final grade of an A. Here, I learned how I
should spend more time revising my work
before turning it in.
Although I gained some skills for my writing
after our first major assignment, our second
was definitely a new challenge. Here, I had to
find four primary sources and four secondary
sources, and describe how they were relevant
to my research. My first task was finding a
research question. After much deliberation, I
finally decided my research would focus on
how Relay for Life communicates with the
Facebook page and interacts with all of the
members of the community. While working on
this, t was extremely hard for me to find
secondary sources that related to my topic.
However, after hours of sorting through
sources, I was able to find ways to connect
articles to my topic in one way or another.
Primary sources were easier for me to find as
I used posts from the Facebook page and an
interview I conducted. This assignment in
total took a lot of time, but I was happy with
the end result.
After all of my hard work I put into this
assignment, I was pleased to see that I
received a 100! Even though I did not have to
revise, I learned a lot about the writing
process and grew as a writer. I found that I
took my time and went back and proofread
multiple times before submitting, which only
benefitted me.

Our final large assignment for the semester

was our analytical research essay. This essay
was to tie all of our research and ideas
together to dig deep into what all of our
information actual meant in relation to writing
in our community. This was definitely a
challenge for me, but I worked my way
through it.
The Analytical Research Essay was a very
important assignment because it combined all
of the past assignments we completed into
one. I used knowledge from my Research
Proposal, Annotated Bibliography and other
small assignments to break down my primary
research and analyze it using rhetorical
situation. After lots of revision, I was happy
with my work.

After getting my grade back, I was pleased to

see that I earned a 92! I was happy with this
grade and chose not to revise. If I did revise
however, I would definitely make some small
changes that Dr. Dieterle recommended. For
example, not using broad terms like “primary”
and “secondary” and blending my research
together better. However, I still feel my work
was great and better than what I could have
completed at the beginning of the semester.

Me Overall, I feel this semester was a huge

success for me. Although I struggled, I feel as
if I got a lot out of the class as a whole. By
doing my research on the Relay for Life
community, I learned how many people with
cancer grow through their struggles and keep
positive. Not only did this project help me
grow as a , but it helped me realize how to be
positive and keep a good mindset, even
through the negatives. I am very proud of my
work from this semester and I am excited to
see where my writing takes me in the future.
