CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

College is an institution of higher learning, providing more specific subjects to

all students with different courses. This level of education is after Senior High School,

an additional two years for students to learn after completing their Junior High School.

Choosing the course to be taken in college can be one of the most difficult part in

education. Therefore, things or factors should be taken consideration before deciding

what course students should study in college in order not to waste money, time, and

effort. Identifying the preferred courses can be an advantage for student to develop good

decision-making for the betterment of themselves and be more concentrated on how

they will achieve their goals. Choosing courses is one of the hardest decision-making

to undergo in being a senior high school student. The importance of choosing courses

related to the strand is also to avoid shifting of courses of students.

The student’s choices to their preferred courses in college determines their

success and consequently their choice of profession. In most cases, students who failed

to choose wisely their courses, were not able to graduate. It is therefore, important to

discover the benefits of knowing the most preferred courses to the senior high school

completers, to the upcoming completers, and to the teachers.

Knowing the most preferred courses related to ABM strand may influence

students in choosing the best courses when they will step in to college. Also, they will

know the advantages and disadvantages of choosing these courses. These will give them

1
certain reasons on why they should choose these courses. Also, it may help them to plan

as soon as now.

College and university courses are the basic building blocks of higher education.

All types of degree programs, including associate’s degrees, bachelor’s degrees, and

master’s degrees, are made up of college and university courses. Colleges and

universities offer courses that can be used for credit toward undergraduate and graduate

degrees and certificates. Some colleges and universities also offer non-credit courses,

such as continuing education or personal enrichment courses (Study.com, 2019).

Another definiton of college course from Qeco (2019), is that it is a course of study that

is normally recognized for credit towards the granting of an approved degree.

Therefore, choosing courses as early as now is important especially to the graduating

Senior High School students.

In choosing specific courses in college, students must be fully aware of the

courses. These are the different courses that the ABM students can take when they go

to college: Under accountancy courses are Bachelor of Science in Accountancy (BSA)

and Bachelor of Science in Accounting Technology (BSAcT).

Under business courses are Bachelor of Science in Business Administration,

Bachelor of Science in Business Administration Major in Business Economics (BSBA),

Bachelor of Science in Business Administration Major in Financial Management

(BSBA major in FM), Bachelor of Science in Business Administration Major in Human

Resource Development (BSBA major in HRDM) , Bachelor of Science in Business

Administration Major in Marketing Management (BSBA major MM), Bachelor of

Science in Business Administration Major in Operations Management (BSBA major in

2
OM), Bachelor of Science in Entrepreneurship (BS Entrep), and Bachelor of Science

in Agribusiness (BS Agribusiness).

Under management courses are Bachelor of Science in Bachelor of Science in

Hotel and Restaurant Management (BS HRM), Bachelor of Science in Office

Administration (BSOA), Bachelor of Science in Real Estate Management (BS REM),

Bachelor of Science in Tourism Management (BSTM), Bachelor of Science in

Community Development (BS Community Development), Bachelor of Science in

Customs Administration (BSCA), Bachelor of Science in Foreign Service (BS Foreign

Service), Bachelor of Science in International Studies (BSIS) , Bachelor of Public

Administration (BPA), Bachelor of Science in Public Safety (BSPS) , and Bachelor of

Science in Social Work (BS Social Work).

There are different factors affecting the decisions of students in choosing their

college courses. In a study of Alba, K., et.al. (2010), the factor that affects the most

with regards to college courses decision-making is the financial stability of the family.

The student finds it complicated to decide whether to go for the course that he or she

desires or to go for the course that his or her family can afford. Personality of a student

can also an important factor, studies have showed that students tend to choose a major

that they think will fit their personality (Mihyeon, 2009). Wildman and Torres (2002),

also included family and friends to be an influential part of student’s choice of major.

Parents with agriculture background most often have an impact in where students go to

college. Gender is also believed to be a factor of the student’s choices of their courses.

It is said that men and women have different styles in choosing their future careers.

3
Men have a more liberal and progressive style of thinking. Women, prefer a hierarchical

style of thinking (Mihyeon, 2009).

Therefore, course selection must be given consideration especially to the

graduating Grade 12 students. This research aims to determine the most preferred

courses of the Grade 12 (Accountancy, Business Management) students of Immaculate

Conception Academy. Knowing the different factors that can affect in choosing courses

can be helpful to the students, to the teachers, and to the parents of the students. It is

also necessary to have knowledge about the different courses related to the chosen

strand in senior high school for the students to easily adjust to their academic activities.

This will help them to decide on what course they will take in college.

Statement of the Problem

The study generally aims to determine the most preferred course of the Grade

12-ABM students of Immaculate Conception Academy.

1) What is the most preferred course of the Grade 12-ABM students?

2) What are the reasons why they chose these courses?

4
Significance of the Study

The results of this research will benefit the following:

To the students, this study will help them in their course selection so that they

will be ready and prepared as early as now. By conducting this study, they will know

the importance of knowing and choosing the best courses that are not just aligned to

their specific strand but also helpful as they will go on with their journey in reaching

their goals in life.

To the teachers, the results of this study will give them clues on how they should

guide the students before taking up these courses. They will also know what advices

they can give to their students as they will take these courses in college. Guidance from

the teachers of the school is needed so that the students will be fully aware of the courses

that they are choosing.

To the parents, this study will help them to know the preferred choices of their

children. Also, they will be able to help, guide, and support them as they will step in to

college. Furthermore, knowing the factors why their children prefer these courses will

give them knowledge of the skills and fields where their children want to excel in. They

will also know how to consider the personal choices of their children and what they

want to become in the future.

To the future researchers, this research will serve as their guide or basis in doing

school-related researches.

5
Scope and Delimitation

The study will focus on the most preferred course in college of the Grade 12

(Accountancy, Business and Management) students of Immaculate Conception

Academy.

Locale of the Study

The study will be conducted at the Immaculate Conception Academy located at

1-s Valdez, City of Batac, Ilocos Norte. It is an originally a learning institution which

caters Nursery, Kindergarten, Elementary Levels, and Junior High School. Presently, it

offers now Senior High School. This institution is a proud member of the Diocese of

Laoag Catholic Educational System.

Population of the Study

The respondents of the study will be the whole population of the Grade 12-ABM

students of Immaculate Conception Academy.

6
Definition of Terms

The following terms will be defined operationally for a better and clearer

understanding of the study:

College. An educational institution or establishment which provides higher

education or higher subjects. It is a higher level of education and is the next step after

completing Senior High School.

Course. It is a core curriculum that all students are required to complete before

they can move on to the next level in their education or earn a diploma. It is a choice of

the college students related to their future careers and professions.

Degree. The standing of students in their education. These are the programs of

completion which have different levels such as Bachelor’s Degree, Masteral’s Degree,

and Doctoral’s Degree.

Most. The greatest number of quantity. It can be identified through the ranking

of the list of courses.

Prefer. It is to choose something above others. It is also an activity wherein an

individual put or set forward a certain course.

7
CHAPTER II
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter contains the summary of literature and studies which have direct

bearing on the study and which provided the researchers with adequate theoretical

background.

Foreign Studies

Unemployment rate in the country is commonly associated with the misfit

graduates produced by universities and colleges and the workforce needed by different

companies. The wrong choice of course taken by most of high school students adds to

the unemployment and underemployment rate of newly graduate students. The

relationship of the factors affecting students’ preference of course to their career

preference, Brainard’s Occupational Preference Inventory (BOPI) results, academic

achievement and their elective grades were considered. The findings revealed that the

availability of work after college is the first consideration of students in choosing a

course in college. Most of the students prefer to take scientific related field courses, or

the “popular courses” for Filipinos. Students’ preferred course is related to their BOPI

result as well as to their father’s occupation. Other factors such as mother’s occupation,

monthly family income, students’ sibling position and students’ third year general

average grades are not related to the students’ preferred course in college to their BOPI

results.

Students’ career success can be best attained if proper guidance is given in

choosing the right course in college, suited to students’ personality, ability and intellect.

8
The choice of a course and which school to enter in college is one of the major

decisions faced by graduating students which is an important element of their learning

process. The course and school selection decision will most likely define their future

success. The provision of a more intensive internal marketing program is suggested.

Likewise, a study on the impact of programs and services and their influence on career

and school selection decisions may be conducted to determine which program or

service made available to senior high students singly or in combination are determinants

of their retention.

Helping student choose the career that suits them can be done by integrating

career plan with the curriculum so that students can make good decisions in what course

to take in college. Collaborative effort of the school administrations, guidance

counselor and parents should also be made to come-up with better career plan for every

individual students.

Local Studies

Pascual (2014) presented that the availability of work after finishing college is

mainly considered by the high school students and then followed by choosing the course

as a personal choice. The peer’s preference of course and consideration of family

business was considered the least factor that affects the decision in choosing college

course. Most of the student-respondents preferred scientific courses which includes

engineering and statistics courses.

9
The afore mentioned study was supported by a study in Our Lady of Peace in

Antipolo (Martin et. al, 2010) which have the same result as to Pascual’s study that

relies the decision-making of students in work viability. However, it displays the

exclusion of the majority's personal ability in order to get the "in-demand" job of the

generation. This kind of factor may have a misfit for the job and a low level of

competency since it is not the job in which they match their abilities. The problem is

that if a large amount of graduates come only on a few courses that has fulfilled the

amount given for job vacancies, there could be a problem for the remaining number of

unemployed fresh graduates of the same courses.

Alba, et. al (2010) determined that the main factors that are affecting a student's

choice for their college course are the following: (a.) the financial stability of the family

that sometimes make students' confused whether to take courses they want or to settle

with something that their parents can afford, and (b.) interference of parents in their

college course decision-making because sometimes it is because of the first reason or

because of the college they've been to and the path that they want their children to take.

They somehow control the student’s path and sometimes what is worse is that they are

too controlling that their assessment for their children is becoming incorrect.

A study from Roosevelt College, San Mateo (Fernando et. al, 2016) found out

that the parents’ influence, personal choice, job opportunity and peer influence can

affect the student’s decision on their choice of college course. The researchers

concluded that the students look not only at their personal choice, but also at the

decision of their parents, peers, and the availability of the job as their guide in choosing

their undergraduate program. Job opportunity is the said highest weighted mean in the

10
study and the researchers concluded that this factor greatly affects the students’ choice

in choosing what college course they will take up. The study has shown that the students

tend to analyze if the course they will choose can improve their skills and if it can put

them in a highly paid profession.

The foregoing studies provided the researchers the needed knowledge in the

conceptualization of the study. The studies mentioned impressed upon the researchers

that identifying courses can be helpful in doing their best in the carreer in the future.

However, there are factors that greatly affect the students on how they choose or decide

on what course they will get. These factors can be peer pressure, family background,

job oppurnity and personal choice. Choosing courses need to be thoroughly decided so

that it will not cause students to waste time, money and effort. Another way to help

students is to choose courses related to their strand in senior high school to easily

prepare them to the hindrances and adapt themselves to the academic activities related

to the course. It is in part due to these studies that the researchers were able to

understand clearly the sides of being in college program curriculum as an important

factor in students learning development and the influential factors of choosing a course.

Further, the array of results and literature from these studies have been reconciled and

synthesized to formulate unified ideas that were paramount in constructing the

framework of this study.

CHAPTER III
METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the discussion on the research design, sources of data

particularly the locale of the study, and the population, the instrumentation and data

collection procedure, and the statistical techniques applied in the analysis and

interpretation of data.

Research Design

The study will be conducted in the method of descriptive research design.

Descriptive method of research is a fact-finding study with adequate and accurate

interpretation of the findings. It describes what it is. It describes with emphasis what

actually exist such as current conditions, situations or any phenomena. Since the present

study will be concerned with the most preferred course in college of the Grade 12-ABM

students, the descriptive method of research is the most appropriate method to use.

Research Instrument

An interview method will be used to gather data needed for the study.

Data Gathering Procedure

Phase I. The researchers will have an interview with each of the Grade 12-ABM

students of Immaculate Conception Academy.

Phase II. The researchers will accumulate the data.

Phase III. The researchers will analyze and interpret the gathered data.

13
Treatment of the Data

Each response from the students will be recorded as the basis of the most

preferred course of the Grade 12-ABM students Immaculate Concepcion Academy. For

instance, researches will ask their most preferred course in college, the reasons why

they choose this course, and the benefits they can get in their preferred course to their

careers in the future. In providing the overall data of the research, knowing the factors

or reasons that leads them to choose their preferred course and the benefits of their

preferred course in their future careers will be presented. Getting the percentage of the

tally is needed to see the results.

The formula for getting the percentage:

𝒇
%= × 𝟏𝟎𝟎
𝒏

Where in:

% = percenatage n= number of the respondent f= frequency

Sampling techniques.

14
CHAPTER IV
RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

This chapter presents the results and discussions of the data gathered from the

respondents.

Bachelor of Science in Accountancy (BSA)

Forty six percent (46%) from the fifty respondents chose Bachelor of Science

in Accountancy as their preferred course for college. The respondents preferred

Accountancy because of practicality and high salary. Also, businesses are growing

which means that accountants are in demand and can give many opportunities to job-

seekers. It is also one of the most promising job and serves as a licensure or board

exam for their future career. Some said that someday, they want to work as an

accountant and they would like to work at banks. It will also be taken as their pre-law.

Other reasons are they were influenced by a cousin, it is the choice of their mother,

inspired by their family because their parents are accountants, they like to challenge

themselves, and they have the abilities to handle the course. Some simply said that they

just like the course, they love math and digits, it is in line with the ABM strand, they

want to become successful someday, it is their dream, and they want to strengthen their

skills in this course because of their good learnings on funda.

15
Bachelor of Science in Business Administration major in Marketing Management

(BSBA Major in MM)

Sixteen percent (16%) from the fifty respondents chose Bachelor of Science in

Business Administration major in Marketing Management as their preferred course for

college. The respondents preferred Marketing Management because they want to

expose themselves in the field of marketing and they want to apply their knowledge

and skills to this course. Some said that they want to be a marketing manager in the

future and they are also good at managing and leading. Other reasons are it is what their

heart desires, relevant to their strand, and it serves as an interest. They also want to

achieve their dreams and have a successful future.

Bachelor of Science in Hotel and Restaurant Management (BS HRM)

Twelve percent (12%) from the fifty respondents chose Bachelor of Science in

Hotel and Restaurant Management as their preferred course for college. The

respondents preferred Hotel and Restaurant Management because this course is

flexible, enabling them to learn cookery and hospitality at the same time so if they

pursue to be a chef in the future, they can easily adjust. They are also confident in taking

thiss course because of their experiences through their work immersion. Some said they

want to work in cruise ship because they want to travel and experience new things. This

course also trains them to be a manager to manage a hotel well.

Bachelor of Science in Business Administration Major in Human Resource

Development (BSBA major in HRDM)

16
Eight percent (8%) from the fifty respondents chose Bachelor of Science in

Business Administration Major in Human Resource Development as their preferred

course for college. The respondents chose this course because it is interconnected with

their recent work immersion where they communicate with applicants. This course will

also help them to empower themselves for their future jobs or careers. Some of the

students also said that this course is their dream to take and they like it. Others said that

this is only their best option they wanted to take.

Bachelor of Science in Tourism Management (BSTM)

Six percent (6%) from the fifty respondents chose Bachelor of Science in

Tourism Management (BSTM) as their preferred course for college. The respondents

chose this course because they have the interest in this field especially in travelling.

Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (BSBA)

Six percent (6%) from the fifty respondents chose Bachelor of Science in

Business Administration as their preferred course for college. The respondents chose

this course because they want to have their own business and manage it by applying

their learnings related to their strand in Senior High School. Many of the respondents

also said that through this course, they can have a licensure exam to be justifiably called

professional by having their license card in their field of expertise.

Bachelor of Science in Business Administration Major in Business Economics

(BSBA Major in BE)

Two percent (2%) from the fifty respondents chose Bachelor of Science in

Business Administration Major in Business Economics as their preferred course in

17
college. One respondent chose this course because of the desire to pursue education

which is inclined with the said track.

Bachelor in Science in Entrepreneurship (BS Entrep)

Two percent (2%) from the fifty respondents chose Bachelor in Science in

Entrepreneurship as their preferred course in college. One respondent chose this course

because it is related to ABM strand and he/she wants to manage his/her business in the

future.

Undecided

Two percent (2%) percent from the fifty respondent are still undecided because

the students do not like failure and they experienced having a hard time during the work

immersion.

Based from the gathered data, the most preferred courses of the Grade 12-ABM

students are Bachelor of Science in Accountancy (BSA), Bachelor of Science in

Business Administration major in Marketing Management (BSBA Major in MM),

Bachelor of Science in Hotel and Restaurant Management (BS HRM), Bachelor of

Science in Business Administration Major in Human Resource Development (BSBA

major in HRDM), Bachelor of Science in Tourism Management (BSTM), Bachelor of

Science in Business Administration (BSBA), Bachelor of Science in Business

Administration Major in Business Economics (BSBA Major in BE), and Bachelor in

Science in Entrepreneurship (BS Entrep).

18
According to Pascual (2014), the availability of work after finishing college is

mainly considered by the high school students and then followed by choosing the course

as a personal choice. The peer’s preference of course and consideration of family

business was considered the least factor that affects the decision in choosing college

course. Likely, the Grade 12-ABM students chose these courses mainly because it is

their personal choice, followed by the influence of their family, and their competency

in these courses. The consideration of their future salaries is the least factor.

A study from Roosevelt College, San Mateo (Fernando et. al, 2016) found out

that the parents’ influence, personal choice, job opportunity and peer influence can

affect the student’s decision on their choice of college course. Similarly, these factors

were also considered by the respondents as they chose their specific courses.

19
