Chapter 2
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

The Bataan Peninsula State University, Balanga Campus is luck of player in in sports
especially Volleyball, this is because of growth of interest of some players in other event.
This factors can figure out of different reasons, the motivation of each player in sport, the
reason of their participation and the connectedness of the athlete in sports.
It is very common when the word motivation observe in some sports studies, this is because
motivation is used to explain the differing behaviour of athlete in sports situation (Chadler,
Cronin and Vamplew, 2002), that the reason why it is commonly used in different studies in
explaining commonly such as movement and effective performance, (Bollock, Takacs,
Kalmer and Dobay, 2011)
In similar findings of other study, it is said that the participation motivation tries to explain
why individuals participate in exercise and sports, (Markland and Ingledew, 2007), this
motives, based on other researcher, such as fun, personal challenge and social affiliation
and autonomous oriented and this had led to an individual to participate sports activities,
(Daniel and Lavton, 2003).
There are lot of benefits findings on how an athlete stay connected to its particular event
sports, according to Broh, 2002, other benefits of athlete in participating sports there are
impacts in extracurricular activities such as athletics, this resulted in an immerged
development and a higher degree of academic achievement among student athlete. In
addition to the work of Broh, 2002, Jordan (1999) found that sports participation improved
the school engagement and academic self -confidence of all student athlete.
In addition, study’s findings that participation in sports benefits in physical and psychological
aspect, it also noted that these benefit, participating in sports to ease stress, and depression
and anxiety, Munim (2009) In similar findings, students motives to participate is the
vigorous participation in sports has positive attributes like discipline, increased self-esteem,
hard work, determination, among ethics, Muihaki,(2007). In addition, athletes participated
in sports to avoid engagement in drugs, unlike other studies who are non-athlete, (Crosnoe,
2002)
In corresponding findings apart from the developmental responsibilities gained through
sports participation, researchers have found that involvement in sports activities give
adolescents a chance to develop both socially and financially in a circle of friends as well as
in adults, this is because the time spent extracurricular activities has more gains compared
to the schedule in the classroom. (Kahne, et al, 2001).
In Becker (1965) and Vickerman (1975), they said that the sport participation is a composite
good were in the athlete derive demands such as equipment, clothing, membership of
organisations, transportation to the place of the activity, and price of the facilities

In the connectedness of the athlete in the sport they are in, the commitments of an athlete
into its selected sports is related to the connectedness of state of belonging of individual
and can perceive that they are taken care of, trusted and appreciated by group of adults
(Whitlock 2006). Like other schools, connectedness is proven that has positive effect on
students learning and development. In addition, school connectedness is the feeling of
closeness to school personnel and the school environment.
