CHAPTER 1
Filipinos love sports, it’s a fact. In almost every barangay, there is a basketball court
where people play in the morning, late in the afternoon, and even in the wee hours. Physical
education classes also ensure that sports are part of a school’s curriculum to encourage students
to participate in different kinds of sports and to help those who want to be athletes in the future.
But passion and talent are not enough. For years, national athletes have been expressing their
sentiments (and disappointments) over the lack of financial support from the government—
funding that could help them train better and join tournaments outside and inside the country.
The NASBE report (2004) states that “Engaging in daily practices in stills in the players
qualities of discipline, teamwork, physical fitness, and organization”. These skills and attributes
can enhance the student’s ability to find success in the classroom. Many children are coerced into
sports as children, by their parents, to get involved and find a passion or hobby in life. But
should parents be encouraging their children into a life full of sports or are the effects of sports
are too negative to keep pursuing? The effects of participating in sports as a youth on academic
performance is theoretically ambiguous. It has been argued that sports participation increases
student’s motivation and teaches self-discipline result in academic spillovers. Conversely, Sports
training may reduce the time available for studying, learning, and a free time for themselves.
SPORTS PARTICIPATION AND ACADEMIC PERFOMANCE 3
This study examines whether participation in sports has a significant impact on academic
performance. The researcher was also interested in whether these correlations are positive and
negative in nature and to provide the strength of the correlation. To focus the research, the

3. Do Sports training affect your studies? If yes, how does it affect your
studies?
SPORTS PARTICIPATION AND ACADEMIC PERFOMANCE 4
The study between the relationship of sport participation and academic performance can be a
learning paradigm in the secondary level to enhance the student’s knowledge about the said
topic. This study will be useful in the following:
To Students. This study will help the student-athlete to have self-awareness because when you
commit to both academics and sports, you must realize its consequences to your academics and
health.
To Parents/Guardians. This study is important for parents/guardians so that they will become
aware to the possible conditions their child may get while studying and training in Sports.
To Teachers. This study is important for teachers so that they will become aware to the possible
conditions their students may get while studying and training in Sports.
To Future Researchers. This study can be a guide for the future researchers. They can take a
look on this study and borrow some ideas which can help their research become more effective.
This study aims to know the effects of Sports participation on academic performance and
become aware to the possible effects that the students may get. In terms of its study there are
limitations that must be considered, the reason is to maintain the order of the study in this regard.
The respondents were Grade 10 student-athletes of Dasmariñas Integrated Highschool.

CHAPTER 2
This study was focus on whether there is significant relationship between Sports participation
and Academic performance. Most of the researchers said that Sports really has a link on
academic performance. Issues and deliberations concerning sports participation and academic
achievement have been heard for decades. Sports enthusiasts were claiming that participation in
any sports help the student-athletes to have " a sound mind and a sound body " individual.
However, some people in the academe believed that sports participation hindered students'
ability to excel in their academic courses because most of their times were allotted into sports
commitments such as training and competitions than studying alone. Some critics further
believed that there was no possibility that the student-athletes achieve excellence in sports as
well as in academics at the same time (Montecalbo-Ignacio et al., 2017).
Benefits of Sports
Sports and athletics are generally recognized as beneficial for our youth. In fact, most children
participate in some form of athletic activity whether they know it or not. Even if they are unable
to join a league, many skills are taught and learned through physical education and even recess.
The benefits of sport include strategic thinking, communication, quick action, the ability to deal
with adversity, developing social skills, among many other skills that are important both in the
academic and working world (Esbrandt, 2019).
Negative Effects
According to Hartman (2008), focusing on athletics becomes “a time and energy drain for
student-athletes, or that an over emphasis on sport might distract attention and concern from the

core academic curriculum and educational mission of the school”. Hartmann reviewed many of
the expert reports on the relationship between athletic participation and educational achievement,
even among the experts there is disagreement about the benefits of athletic participation when it
comes to educational achievement. These authors found that students who highly valued sports
in the 10th grade lost a substantial amount of connection with the school if they were no longer
involved in sports by the 12th grade. This loss of affirmation can lead students to lose the
motivation needed to continue to do their best in school, which will lead to a decrease in
academic performance (Eccles, Barber, Stone & Hunt, 2003).

set of rules and compete against each other.
Athlete: a person who is trained or skilled in exercises, sports, or games requiring physical
strength, agility, or stamina.
Student is primarily a person enrolled in a school or other educational institution and who is

Research Design
This Quantitative type of Research utilize a Correlation design to measure the strength of the
relationship of the said variables. This type of design helps researchers to establish a relationship
between two closely connected variables.
The data collection approach employed was a survey containing a series of questions that was
delivered to a group of student-athletes and asked to fill it out with their desired answers to the
questions. This study will use a survey to determine the effects of sports participation on
students' academic performance.
To determine if there’s a significant relationship between the sports participation and academic
performance, Bivariate (Pearson) Correlation will be utilized to determine the strength of the
relationship of the two variables.
Pearson’s correlation coefficient is the test statistics that measures the statistical relationship, or
association, between two continuous variables. It is known as the best method of measuring the
association between variables of interest because it is based on the method of covariance. It will
be a suitable statistical treatment for finding the significant relationship and the effects of sports
participation on academic performance.
