Project Brief:
The Centre for Environmental Health is a joint initiative of the Public Health Foundation of India and the Tata
Institute of Social Sciences (Mumbai), and has been established with generous support from Tata Sons and Tata
Consultancy Services. Environmental Health is an area of growing interest for PHFI, with our work in the space
expanding over the past few years to address issues related to air pollution, climate change, pesticide use, and
water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), while the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) has been in the forefront of
studying the social, economic and environmental determinants of health. This collaborative effort aims to set up
this much-needed platform in India for dedicated and high quality research and capacity building in the area of
environmental health.
In addition to a portfolio of research in areas such as air pollution, WASH and climate change, the Centre also offers
a platform to carry out work in chemical exposures , including pesticides, electronic waste and industrial pollution,
through fellowships and grants. The cumulative effects of socio-environmental factors along with nutritional
deficits can aggravate the resultant effects in already vulnerable populations exposed to such toxicants . Various
environmental and socio-cultural factors remain impediments and addressing these factors in a holistic approach
will be essential to evolve suitable remedial activities.
Efforts at the Center will focus on understanding the adverse health outcomes linked to exposure to toxic pollutants
in a range of situations, from informal waste recyclers in the electronic waste sector, farmers and their families
exposed to pesticides and vulnerable populations residing in industrial sectors.
Deliverables:
Expand the chemical exposures portfolio in CEH, working at the intersection of socio-environmental and
nutritional factors.
Conceptualise research projects, develop grant applications and work with other team members where relevant
to provide expertise in the theme area of chemical exposures, working at the intersection of socio-environmental
and nutritional factors in addressing health outcomes.
