Online Projects, Collaboration Sites and Publishing Opportunities

Lesson Idea Name: Math Questions

Content Area: Math
Grade Level(s): 3rd
Content Standard Addressed: MGSE3.NBT.2 Fluently add and subtract within 1000 using strategies and
algorithms based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and
subtraction.

Technology Standard Addressed: 3c. Students curate information from digital resources using a variety of
tools and methods to create collections of artifacts that demonstrate meaningful connections or conclusions

Selected Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing Opportunity: Dr. Math

URL(s) to support the lesson: http://mathforum.org/dr.math/

Describe how you would incorporate an Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing Opportunity in your
classroom:
In order to incorporate Dr. Math into my classroom I will first go over a math lesson with the students. In
this lesson we will cover place value, addition/subtraction/ operations, and different algorithms. After this the
students and I will do some examples in order to give students the opportunity practice before sending them
off on their own to complete a worksheet. I will then pull up the Dr. Math question forum in order to show
the students how it is helpful for math and how to navigate the website. I will have one student that does not
completely understand the lesson ask me a question based on their misunderstanding. I will then type this
question into the forum, which in turn will show the students how helpful this online resource can be.
After the lesson and giving the students the demonstration of the site, I will then give the students the
worksheet and iPads/laptops (based on school) in order to help them complete the worksheet. For example,
if by the time the students get the worksheet and they do not remember what place value is, the students
can then search place value on the site, and it will give them examples and definitions. This will also allow the
students to have help when they have math homework to take home and I will make a point at the end of the
activity to let the students know that this resource can be useful in and outside of school. I will also have
students who show good work and have correct answers on the worksheet publish their work on the website
so others who have problems are able to look back and use their work.

What technologies would be required to implement this proposed learning activity in a classroom?
 Laptops/tablets depending on what the school provides.
Describe how the following features are addressed in this learning experience (note: all of them may not be
addressed in the project, but most should be if you are reaching a high LoTi Level).
a. Collaboration with peers, near-peers, mentors outside their classroom and often beyond their
school: Students are able to get peer collaboration from this website by asking questions on the site
and getting their questions answered by their peers or answering questions for their peers.

b. Student-centered learning and knowledge creation (creating original data and or producing original
products as a result of engaging in a project): N/A

c. Higher-order thinking: Students will use their higher order thinking skills during the completion of the
worksheet and also when answering questions for their peers on the website.

d. Students publishing their original work to others who will use/care about their product: At the end of
the worksheet, the students who show exceptional work and have correct answers will be asked to

publish their work on Dr. Math in order to allow others who may have questions over the content to
use.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

The activity and technology tools that I have selected to support and enhance the learning experience for the
students in my classroom by giving the students alternatives for visual information, clarifying math
vocabulary, and it also activates student’s prior knowledge.
Lesson idea implementation and Internet Safety Policies:
I could implement this learning experience and still be in compliance with internet safety and student privacy
policies by giving the students iPads and using my own iPad to dictate what the students see and the websites
the students are on. This way I can see what the students are doing at all times and this allows me to make
sure the students are on task at all times.
Reflective Practice:
I feel that the activities that I have created could impact student learning by allowing the students to get
more insight into the lesson content. This learning activity gives students the opportunity to enhance their
learning by getting the same content/information from different sources. In order to further extend this
lesson, I would have the students research assigned math topics on the website that relate to the content
that we have learned. The students will put this into a PowerPoint to present to the class.
