Report in Sts

This document discusses several key environmental issues: 1) Littering and landfills caused by improper waste disposal as populations and consumption increase. 2) Ozone layer depletion from release of chemicals containing chlorine and bromine. 3) Mining causing acid mine drainage, metal contamination, and increased sediment in streams. 4) Natural resource depletion from overconsumption, overpopulation, deforestation and pollution. 5) Various other issues like natural disasters, nuclear waste, habitat loss, agriculture pollution, light and noise pollution, and urban sprawl. Addressing these issues requires reducing waste, recycling, reusing resources, and developing more sustainable practices.

Environmental Issues

BS PSY 1A2-1
Environmental Awareness essentially is a way to help people understand the economic,
aesthetic and biological significance of retaining resources and reducing or disposing of the
harmful influences of artificial changes. It helps the society understand the comsequences of human
activities on various lands and identifies remedial solutions and also encourages conservation of
irreplaceable natural resources and species.
In this way we be able to find the best solution to a certain environmental issues we need to know
what are the environmental issues and what causes it.

1. Littering and landfills – Problem in proper waste disposal has been one of the issues
related with the growth of population. due to the increased number of wastes from our
homes, schools, offices, hospitals, and markets. It can result to an air, soil and land
pollution, Health effects, and also landfill gases together with a substantive amount of
landfill waste, can easily start a fire.
Causes:
• Solid waste are non-biodegradable, they heap in the landfills where they stay for
years.
• Agricultural waste are highly toxic and can contaminate the land and water
resources. the wastes remain there for years impacting on soil quality and polluting
the land.
• Increasing urbanization and population growth with the increase of population and
urban growth, the demand for manufactured products and materials increases. As
the demand increases, so does the increase of solid wastes.
2. Ozone layer Depletion- gradual
thinning of Earth's ozone layer in the
upper atmosphere
Cause : release of chemical compounds
containing gaseous chlorine or bromine
from industry and other human activities.
Effect: The depletion of ozone layer
allows entering of UV rays from sun into
the earth’s atmosphere which is associated
with a number of environmental issues and
health related issues like skin cancer, eye
damage.

3. Mining- Extraction of earth’s

minerals

Cause: By mining include acid mine

drainage, metal contamination, and
increased sediment levels in streams.
Sources can include active or
abandoned surface and underground
mines, processing plants, waste-
disposal areas, haulage roads, or
tailings ponds.

Effect: loss of biodiversity, erosion,

contamination of surface water, ground
water, and soil. The formation of
sinkholes is also possible. Other than environmental damage, mining may also affect the
surrounding population's health as a result of contamination caused by the leakage of
chemicals.
4. Natural Resource Depletion – Overconsumption of
the non-renewable resources of the

Causes:
Overpopulation- with seven billion people on the planet, the
demand on Earth’s resources continue to increase.
Overconsumption and waste- this is the excessive and
unnecessary use of resources.
Deforestation and the Destruction of Ecosystems -leading to
loss of biodiversity.
Technological and Industrial Development.- people cut and
remove trees to build an establishment
Pollution and Contamination of resources- this will make the
resources unusable

Effect:
Resource Scarcity: Resource become insufficient because of over-consumption and
degradation.
Rising Prices: Scarcity makes the resource’s price to rise.
Water Shortages: As population growth increase, water shortages occur.

5. Natural Disasters- This includes hurricanes,

floods, earthquakes and forest fires. What makes it
worst is it can occur anytime without us people
knowing it.

Cause: Human activities play a role in the

frequency and severity of disasters. A natural
disaster is a disruption in the balance of the
environment. The human factor raises the cost, in
both property damage and loss of life.
6. Nuclear Issues- one great source of energy comes form nuclear resources. However, its
by-product, the radioactive waste is extremely harmful and toxic. Improper disposal of
radioactive wastes will affect humans, plants, and animals including in the environment.

Nuclear power plants constantly emit low levels of radiation into the environment. ... The
degree of damage low levels of radiation cause to wildlife, plants and the ozone layer is
not fully understood. More research is being done to determine the magnitude of effects
caused by low levels of radiation in the environment

7. Habitat loss- Habitats are not always destroyed to use the land for humans to live. They
are also destroyed so that their materials can be used to keep us comfortable. For
example, the trees are used to create various paper products and wood is also used for the
production of furniture and miscellaneous items.
Effect: Habitat destruction is the leading cause of extinction for various species and is the
reason that many animals are endangered. Animals are very intelligent beings, but
without their natural homes, they are unable to protect themselves and care for their
young.

8. AGRICULTURE POLLUTION – The use

of chemical products lik pesticles and fertilizers has
been a common agriculture practice nowadays in
dealing with pest. The chemicals have a possibility
to go down through the soil and affect the plants and
crops.

It will be a problem most importantly t the framers

that can make their source of living will be
destroyed

9. LIGHT AND NOISE POLLUTION- this

is more often happen in the urban places because
of the high density of the light from the many
building that surrounds the place, from the cars
and also from the street lights.

- The most species that are affected to this

pollution is the birds population because the
atmosphere that where they fly is polluted it will
affect their mating, communication to other birds.
10. URBAN SPRAWL - is a low density residential and commercial development on
undeveloped land. Most of the time, people will move from these areas to try to find
better areas to live. This has been the way of the world since the beginning.

These causes will mainly include: Lower Land Rates: Lower cost land and houses in
the outer suburbs of the cities, because the centers of urban development have really
made people want to stop settling in these areas and want to venture further out.

11. Acid Rain- it is caused by the contamination of precipitation with nitrogen and sulfuric
acids has great ecological effects. It may affect the aquatic ecosystem, forest, man-made
structures, evem cause health issues. Acid rain can also change the composition of soil
and bodies of water, making them uninhabitable for local animals and plants.
To avoid these environmental issues us, people should always have discipline
and care to our environment.

Reduce

Reduce suggests cutting back on the quantity and the kind of products you buy. The idea is to consume less,
which results in less waste produced.

Recycle

Recycling can get a bit confusing but it is worth taking the time to understand how plastics differ from each
other. For more information on distinguishing recycling labels.

Reuse

Instead of throwing out products you no longer think you need, try repurposing them

Rot

This includes the act of composting. Some items that are compostable are all types of food, plant trimmings,
leaves, flowers, weeds, and solid paper products (such as used paper napkins/towels/plates, coffee cups, and
paper to-go containers.

Refuse

Refuse refers to municipal solid waste (household trash). Be proactive by designating specific trashcans for
plastics, papers, metals, glass, and landfill. This will make sorting much easier in Transfer Stations and will
allow you to keep a tab on how much of each type of product you use.
