The lesson is about zero and negative exponents in mathematics. It discusses the rules that any number raised to the zero power is equal to one, and any number raised to a negative exponent can be simplified by moving the numerator into the denominator to become a positive exponent.

The lesson is about zero and negative exponents. It uses an exponents card game activity to motivate students and help them review prior knowledge about exponents before discussing the key ideas.

Any number raised to the zero power is equal to one. Examples given are 100=1 and 80x^2=x^2.

Detailed Lesson Plan in Mathematics

Grade 7

I. OBJECTIVES
Upon the completion of this lesson the students should be able to:
1. Know that a number raised to the zeroth power is equal to one.
2. Simplify and write equivalent expression that contain negative exponents.

II. SUBJECT MATTER

A. Topic : Zero and Negative Exponents
B. Materials: White board marker, playing cards, tarpapel, manila paper
C. References: Intermediate Algebra Grade 8 pg. 131-132

III. LEARNING TASKS

TEACHER’S ACTIVITY STUDENT’S ACTIVITY

A. Preliminary Activities
Prayer Our father who art,…….

-Good afternoon class -Good afternoon Ma’am

-Miss secretary please list down the name
of your classmates who are present
today. -Yes Ma’am (secretary)
B. Review
-Class what was our last topic? -Our last topic is about Positive Integral
Exponents.
-Anybody please answer the following
and tell what Laws of Exponents it is.
1. 23 24 =27 (Product of Power)
2. (a2)3 =a6 (Power of Power)
3. (4 2)2 =42 22 = 16 4 = 64 (Power of Product)
4. 26 ÷ 24 =22 (Quotient of Power)
-Very good!

C. Motivation
Stop, Pick and Answer
There is a box containing a different
questions. The box will be in the
hands of the students , the teacher
will play a music and the student who
hold the box will pass it to his/her
classmates. When the music stop the
students will also stop to pass the
box. The student who hold the box
will pick a question inside the box
and answer it. (Student will participate)
D. Lesson Proper
1.) Activity

EXPONENTS CARD GAME

Objective: Students will engage in prior
knowledge that might be needed to
understand the idea behind negative and
zero exponents.
Materials: Playing Cards,
Procedure:
Separate the class into three teams. All
teams should be close enough to the teacher
to be to see the cards.

- Students will cooperate

-There is a zero and negative exponents.

All of the number cards will simply stand for -Is about zero and negative exponents.
a positive number.
Ex:

23 23-3 20
23
23 2●2●2 1
27 2●2●2●2●2●2●2 24

23 23-7= 2-4
27
- Any number raised to the zero exponents
is equal to one.

-Any number raised to negative exponents,

simply moved the numerator into
denominator to become positive exponents.

=1

=1/22●2 = 1/24

=1/54
=20x3y0 =1●x3= x3
=8

Joker will stand for zero.

Ex:
=0

The faces will represents the negative

number.
Ex:
= -2

Randomly teacher will pull two cards from

the deck. The first card that the
teacher has been pull will be the base
number. Second card will be the
exponents. The first team to get the
right answer will win a point.

2.) Analysis
-What have you observe in our activity?

-Do you have now any idea about our

topic today?

Our topic for today will be Zero and

Negative Exponents.

ZERO EXPONENTS

20= ?

Consider two ways of simplifying the

expression 23/ 23 .
23 2●2●2 1
23 2●2●2

23
23
(answer and apply the quotient of power
rule)

Therefore, 20= 1 since 23/23 cannot have

two different values.

REMEMBER:
Any number raised to the zero power is
equal to one.
Ex :
1. 100=1 3. 80x2= 1● x2 = x2
2. 1000000=1

NEGATIVE EXPONENTS

2-4 = ?

Now, consider two ways of simplifying

the expression 23/27 .
23
27

23
27
Therefore, 2-4=1/24 since 23/27 cannot have
two different values.

REMEMBER:
Any number raised to negative
exponents simply moved the numerator into
denominator to become positive exponents.
Ex:
1. 5-2= 1/52= 1/25
2. a-3 = 1/a3
3. 1/52 = 5-2

3.) Abstraction
-What things are we going to remember if
we encounter a number with a zero
exponents?

-What about negative exponents?

4.) Application
Simplify.
1.) (9a)0

2.) (22)-2

3.) 5-4
4.) 20x3

IV. EVALUATION

Direction:Simplify and write the equivalent expression of the following:

1/2 crosswise.

1. 9150d4e 4. (42a)0
-2
2. 100 5. (3a)-3
3. 1/24

V. ASSIGNMENT

Direction: Find the value of each expression without zero or negative exponents.
Assignment notebook.

1. (2p4q2r)-2
2. 150
3. 1/82
4. (5a2bc5)0
5. 1/(2xy3)2
