Chapter 1
The Phenomenon

INTRODUCTION

Self-confidence is the memory of success (David Storey).

Having self-confidence must be present in people’s daily lives in order for them to believe
that they have the ability to do anything and to success.

Students who possess much self-confidence could have an active participation in class which
was a contributory factor to improve someone’s academic achievement unlike those who aren’t
have that enough confidence to share ideas which maybe better and correct. Self-confidence is an
individual feature, the core of which is the positive assessment of the individuals own skills and
abilities, as sufficient goals and meet its needs.

Coopersmith (1967), asserted that self-esteem; self-esteem involves an attitude of approval or

disapproval and indicates the extent to which the individual believes himself to be capable,
significant, successful, and worth. In short, self-esteem is a personal judgement of worthiness
that is expressed in the attitudes the individual hold toward himself.

The classroom is one such environment children must learn to employ their confidence. Their
confidence can have a big impact on a child’s ability to succeed in an academic setting. Someone
was remarked that there are some students who have lack in self-confidence but in terms of
social media, specifically facebook, they have the guts to say, to post something about their own
opinion.

Self-confidence is a great factor that affects the academic performances of many students.
Self-confidence is considered one of the most influential motivators and regulators of behaviour
in people’s everyday lives (Bandura, 1986). Students who are lack of self-confidence can lessen
their ability in participating in class. Usually students who has enough self-confidence excel In
their performance. Boosting your self-confidence ca help you improve your social skills, being
one of those people who are lack of self-confidence may become a hindrance to your academic
performances. Being confident enough with your acts and knowledge is a big advantage in you
performance in school. Being confident enough with your acts and knowledge is a big advantage
for your future someday. If you gain or boost enough self-confidence it will possibly help you in
the near future cause all that you learn in the past you can it carry all until you get old.

We conduct a preliminary interview to two teacher here in CNHS-SHS.

Our first question is “ano po ang masasabi niyo sa self-confidence ng mga estudyante ngayon?
(what can you say about the self-confidence of the students nowadays?). Maám Lea Fe Rito said
that “in terms of academic, masyadong mababa yung iba, yung iba naman tama lang. (in terms of
academic, other student has low confidence while others have high confidence). Maám Charisse
Faminiano said that “ Masyadong mababa, kasi waya sinra masyadong ayam sa school kung
baga waya sinra interes sa pag iskwela. Usa kasi sa nakakadagdag it self-confidence ay may alam
sa loob ng klase”( so low, they don’t have enough knowledge in the way that they are not
interested. One of the factors that increase the confidence of the students is they have knowledge
in class. Our second question is “paano nakakaapekto ito sa kanilang pag aaral?’. Maám Lea
stated that “pag sobrang taas yung self-confidence ng mga estudyante minsan ayaw na nilang
makinig sa teacher kasi feeling nila alam na nila lahat. Pag sobrang baba ayaw na nilang
magparticipate sa mga gagawin kasi feeling nila sa sobrang baba ng self-confidence nila,
mamamali lang sila"(if it is so high, some students won’t listen in teachers because they feel like
they kow all. If it is so low, they don’t want to participate in any performance because they feel
like they will just make a mistake). Maám Charisse stated that “pag ka waya ka masyadong ayam
sa klase syempre mababa ka imo self-confidence, waya ka self-confidence sa pag iskwela,
mababa ka imo grades” (if you don’t have enough knowledge in your class, your grades will be
affected).

The dictionary defines self-confidence as freedom of doubt; belief in yourself and your
abilities. Definition of self-confidence is believing in yourself. Many people, especially students,
lack the self-confidence needed to live a happy and healthy life. Self-confidence is satisfaction in
one self. This must be present in people’s daily lives I order for them to believe that they have
the ability to do anything. False self-confidence can also show that you are over-confident. Some
people fake self-confidence to not look weak or scared by others.

Dr. Ken Shore’s stated that “a student’s self-esteem has a significant impact on almost
everything she does on the way she engages in activities, deals with challenges, interact with
others. Self-esteem also can have a marked effect on academic performance. Low self-esteem
can lessen a student’s desire to learn, her ability to focus, and her willingness to take the risk.
Positive self-esteem on the other hand, is one of the building blocks of school success, it
provides a firm foundation for learning.

Lack of self-confidence is a common issue here in CNHS senior high school grade-11
HUMSS students. There’s an instant that the students are having a hard time to participate during
class performances because they are lack in confidence. This issue leads to researchers to know
what lack of self-confidence can do to a student during class performance.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study entitled “LACK OF CONFIDENCE IN CLASS PERFORMANCES OF
SELECTED GRADE-11 HUMSS: CASE OF CNHS-SHS” to determine how self-confidence
can affect in participating in class performance of SHS Student.
Specifically, this sought to answer to the following questions:
1. What triggers students of SHS not to participate during class performances?

2. What do student of Senior High School usually feel during any class performance?

3. Is there a significant effect of having lack of confidence in the class participation/performance

of the SHS students?

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The question is raising whether having lack of self-confidence can affect in achieving good
capability in Academic Performance so that the result will help or contribute to the school
curriculum.

The data gathered from this study can be useful to our informants of CNHS-SHS who has
experiencing lack of self-confidence to participate in the class.

For the teachers, this study could help and give them a deeper understanding about the
different reason that triggers confidence to students.

The administrator can also benefit in this study because when the students have a
confidence, it is an honor to him to be an administrator in this kind of school.

The students will benefit in the way that they will have a knowledge about how important
self-confidence is in their study.

Most of all the researchers would like to benefit such kind of investigation that can build up
knowledge about how having lack of self-confidence greatly influences in participating of the
students in class performances.
