I. Kinetic Friction

1. A block of mass 10kg is on a rough floor and has a horizontal velocity of 5 m / s as shown.
Gravity and normal forces act in all cases. The coefficient of kinetic friction between the
block and the floor is 0.3 in all four cases. Assume g  10m / s2 , and also assume the velocity
direction to be the positive direction. In case (i) there are no other force applied on the
block. In case (ii) a vertical force of 20N is applied as shown. In case (iii) a horizontal force
of 5N is applied on the block. In case (iv) a vertical force of 20N and a horizontal force of
40N are both simultaneously applied on the block.

Case (i) Case (ii)

Fapp  5 N

Case (iii) Case (iv)

(i) Find the acceleration of the 10kg block in case (i).

(ii) Find the acceleration of the 10kg block in case (ii).
(iii) Find the acceleration of the 10kg block in case (iii).
(iv) Find the acceleration of the 10kg block in case (iv).

2. A body is moving along a rough horizontal surface with an initial velocity 8 m / s . If the body
comes to rest after travelling a distance 16m , the find the coefficient of sliding friction.

II. Practice Exercise

3. Consider a car moving on a straight road with speed of 400 m / s and find the distance at
which the car can be stopped.  k  0.4

4. A marble block of mass 4 kg lying on ice when given a velocity of 12 m / s is stopped by

friction in 20s , then find the coefficient of friction.

5. A block of mass 40kg is placed on a rough horizontal surface having coefficient of friction
  0.4 . If a horizontal force of 400 N is applied on it, then find the acceleration of the block.
(Take g  10m / s2 )

6. A system consists of three masses m1, 2m2 , 3m3 connected by P

a string passing over a pulley P . The mass m1 hangs freely
and 2m2 and 3m3 are on a rough horizontal table
(the coefficient of friction =  ). Find the downward
acceleration of mass m1 . (Assume m1  2m2  3m3  2m )

7. A smooth block is released at rest on a 30° incline and then slides a distance d . The time
taken to slide is n times as much to slide on a rough incline than on a smooth incline then
find the coefficient of friction.

8. A heavy uniform chain lies on horizontal table top. If the coefficient of friction between the
chain and the table surface is 0.45 , then find the maximum fraction of the length of the
chain that can hang over one edge of the table.

9. A horizontal force of 20 N is necessary to just hold a block stationary against

a wall. The coefficient of friction between the block and the wall is 0.4 . Find
the weight of the block.

10. A block of mass 2m is in contact with the cart C as shown in

the figure. The coefficient of static friction between the block C m
and the cart is 2  . The acceleration  of the cart that will
prevent the block from falling satisfies

2mg g
(A)   (B)  
 2 m
g g
(C)   (D)  
2 

11. A block rests on a rough inclined plane making an angle of 60° with the horizontal. The
coefficient of static friction between the block and the plane is 0.6 . If the frictional force
on the block is 20 N , then find the mass of the block. (Take g  10 m / s 2 )

12. A block of mass 10kg is on a rough inclined surface of a fixed wedge that
F=40N
makes an angle of 30° to the horizontal force F  40 N is applied on the 10 kg
block as shown. If the block starts from rest and the coefficient of kinetic
friction between the block and the inclined surface is 0.5 , the find the 30o
1
magnitude of acceleration of the block. Take g  10 m / s and sin 30 

13. A block of mass m is placed on a surface with a vertical cross section given by y . If
4
the coefficient of friction is 1 , then find the maximum height above the ground at which
the block can be placed without slipping.

of 3m . Assuming that the resistance due to water is negligible, find the speed of the ship.

15. A block of mass 2 kg rests on a rough inclined plane making an angle of 30° with the
horizontal. The coefficient of static friction between the block and the plane is 0.7 . Find the
frictional force on the block. (Assume g  9.8m / s )
