a) Andrew stays for 3 nights and has breakfast on 2 mornings. His bill is £145 Write down
an algebraic equation to illustrate this.

Let 1 night be represented by n and 1 morning be represented by m

3n + 2m = 145

b) Doreen stays for 5 nights and has breakfast on 3 mornings. Her bill is £240. Write down
an equation to illustrate this.

5n + 3m = 240

c) Calculate the cost of one breakfast.

5n + 3m = 240 _1 x 2

3n + 2m = 145 _2 x 3

10n + 6m = 480

9n + 3m = 435

1n = 45

m = (145 – 3(45))/2

m=5

7.A group of fifth year students from Alloa High School were asked how many hours studying
they did in the week prior to their exams. The results are shown below.
14 7 9 12 19 10 16 15
(a) Use an appropriate formula to calculate the mean and standard deviation of these times.

Mean = 102/8 = 12.75 = 13

Standard Deviation = 3.3
(b) A similar group of students from Alloa Academy were asked the same question.The mean
number of hours studied was 16 and the standard deviation was 2.2. Explain how did the
number of hours studied by students from Alloa High School compare with the number of
hours studied by students from AlloaAcademy ?
The average number of hours that children used to study for Alloa Academy was higher and
the variation between the time is less as compare to Alloa high School so it is more consistent.

8. You must have noticed that the sum of two square numbers is also a square number.
These three numbers can then form the sides of a right angled triangle. The ancient
Egyptians are known to have used the most common example: the 3, 4, 5 triangle.
Which symbolized their divinity.

Three numbers like 3, 4, 5 which satisfy the equation a2 + b2 = c2 and which form
the sides of a right-angled triangle are known as Pythagorean triples. There are an
infinite number of Pythagorean triples. Here are some triples arranged in a table.

a) Explore further andwrite down rows 5, 6 and 7 of the table above.

5c = 61
6b = 84
6c = 85
7a = 15
7b = 112
7c = 113
b) Show that 5, 12, 13 is a Pythagorean triple.
52 + 122 = 132
25 + 144 = 169
169 = 169
therefore 5,12,13 is a Pythagorean triplets
c) Describe in your words, two patterns you have discovered from the table in
part a.
The value of A in the equation increases by 2 in the table whereas the value of C is always one
larger than that of B.
d) Stateas a general rule any two patterns you have discovered from the table
in part a.
The value of A in the equation increases by 2 in the table whereas the value of C is always one
larger than that of B.

e) Verify your general rule from part d.

a= no.of row + 2
c= b +1

9. Write down the given values for x into each equation to complete the table. Show your
processes.

3
Line A: 𝑦 = 2 𝑥 + 1

x −2 0 2
y −2 1 4
2
Line B: 𝑦 = − 3 𝑥 + 1

x −3 0 3
Y 3 1 -1

(ii) Plot the points from the tables and graph the two lines on the same system of axes. Label
the graphs.
(iii) Consider the graphs you have sketched:
(a) Annotate what do you notice about the y-intercept of the two lines?
Both lines have the same y-intercept
(b) Write down what do you notice about the size of the angle formed at the point where
the two lines intersect?
The angle formed at the interaction of the two points is a vertically opposite
angle . Each angle is 900
(c) Write down the coordinates of the point where the two lines intersect.
(0,1)
10. The function f is given by f (x) = ax2 + bx + c. Part of the graph of f is shown. The
graph of f passes through the points P(-10, 12), Q(-5, -3) and R(5, 27). Calculatethe
values of a, b and c.

On substituting P (- 10 , 12) in f(x)

12 = 100a – 10b + c …… (i)

On substituting Q ( -5 , -3) in f(x)

- 3= 25a – 5b +c……(ii)

On substituting R ( 5 , 27) in f(x)

27= 25a + 5b +c…… (iii)

Solving (i) , (ii) and (iii) we get

a=0.4 , b = 3 , c = 2

11. The reception area in a council office block is to be tiled with a mixture of two types of
ceramic tile – white and blue. The contractors left two samples, with their cost per square
metre, as shown in the diagrams below.

a) Using Diagram 1 write down an equation in b and w, where b is the cost of a blue tile
and w is the cost of a white tile.
16w + 9b = 25.2
w = (25.2 – 9b)/16
b = (25.2 – 16w)/9

(b) Using Diagram 2 write down a second equation in b and w.

12w + 13b = 26.4

w = (26.4 – 13b)/12
b = (26.4 – 12w)/13

Unfortunately the manager did not like any of the samples left and decided to use one of his
own. His choice is shown in the diagram.

(c)Calculate how much per square metre would this design cost ?

12w + 13b = 26.4 _ x 4

16w + 9b = 25.2 _ x 3

48w + 52b = 105.6

48w + 27b = 75.6

25b = 30

b = 30/25 = 1.2

w = (26.4 – 13b)/12

w = (26.4 – 13(1.2))/12

w = (26.4 – 15.6)/12

w = 10.8/12

w = 0.9

13(0.9) + 11(1.2) = cost

cost = $ 24.9
SECTION C ( Criteria D and C)

12. Jessie is parking in a garage for a concert. It costs $6 for the first 2 hours, an additional $3
for each additional hour or fraction of an hour, with a maximum charge of $24 for a day.

a) Write down in this situation, what represents the domain?

The domain is the input values so it would the number of hours that represents the domain.
Represented as values of y axis

b) Write down what variable is associated with the range? c

The range is the cost as it is the output value. Represented as values on x
axis
c) State the domain and range.
Function is represented as

Thus domain and range are

domain: 0 ≤ x ≤ 24 range: {6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24}

13. A ship is 1km out to sea from the base of a cliff. On top of the cliff is a lighthouse. From the
ship, the angle of elevation to the base of the lighthouse is 16° and the angle of elevation to the
top of the lighthouse is 19.5°.. The diagram is;
1. Calculate the height of the cliff
Tan16 = cliff/1
tan 16 x 1 = cliff
= 0.3km
2. Calculate the height of the lighthouse
0.35 – 0.3 = 0.05 km

3. Calculate the total height (cliff + lighthouse)

tan 19.5 = total height/1

total height = 0.35

14. Jane found a small photo-frame and decided to put one of her favourite photographs
in it. The diagram below shows the dimensions of the frame.
a) Show that the area of glass needed for the centre of the frame can be given by the formula

A = (7 – 2x)(10 – 2x)

A = (70 – 14x – 20x + 4x2)

A = 70 – 34x + 4x2

(b) If the area of glass needed was 28cm2,solve to find a possible value for x.

28 = 70 – 34x + 4x2

0 = 70 -34x + 4x2 – 28

0 = 42 – 34x + 4x2

0 = 4(x2 – 8.5 + 10.5)

0 = 4(x – 7)(x -3/2)

x = 7 or 3/2

15. Hydraulic systems are widely used in our daily lives. They utilize incompressible fluids like
hydraulic oils to transfer pressure and create forces. Among the utilizations of hydraulics are
hydraulic cylinders. A hydraulic cylinder is a completely sealed metal cylinder (Tube/Barrel) as
shown in the diagram below. When oil enters from base port, the oil pressure increases and
pushes the piston to the front. This causes oil to leave from the rod port. Once the operator
gives a reverse order, the oil enters from the rod port and pushes the piston backwards. The
oil then leaves from the base port back to the tanks.
x = 4 , -4

b) Below is a diagram and a front view of the piston. The piston is circular in shape and has a
circular hole of radius 2cm at the center. Calculate the radius (x) of the larger circle if the
shaded area is 188.4 cm2 (Area of circle is A= πr2 ). Assume π = 3.14)

188.4 = 3.14 [R2 – r2]

188.4/3.14 = [R2 – 4]

60 +4 = R2

R =8cm
C) Under certain conditions, the pressure (P) [in psi units] of the oil in the cylinder is modelled
as dependent variable with oil flow rate (t) according to the following relationship.

P = 0.004t2− 0.1t + 1.6

Calculate the flow rate, which would result in a pressure (P) of 20 psi.

20 = 0.004t2− 0.1t + 1.6

0.004t2− 0.1t + 1.6-20=0

0.004t2− 0.1t – 18.4 =0

On solving we get t = 80.4375

D) The piston is sealed using a fiber seal as shown in diagram 1. Due to complaints about piston
seals premature failures, (seals not serving long enough), the quality control department in the
factory have collected data about the service life of seals in various locations and tabulated the
following data in the table below:

i) Calculate the average service life of seals. (Add new columns or rows to the table above if
you need todo so).

Change the upper limit of each column to make class size same

Service hour range No. of failures Mid value xi F* xi

1000-2000 239 1500 358500
2000-3000 873 2500 2182500
3000-4000 1347 3500 4714500
4000-5000 311 4500 1399500

Mean = 3205.55
ii) Write down the modal class of seal failures.

N=2700

2700/2= 1350

Modal class = 3000-4000

iii) One customer reported that a seal have lasted more than 8000 hours. The quality control
department have decided to discard this value from the study. State whether you agree or
disagree with their decision and state the reason.

Yes because that will be an outlier

D) In order to be more specific in addressing the issue, the quality control department revised
the class length of the data in question 3 and produced the cumulative frequency curve below

i) Write down the estimated median seal service life in hours.

Estimated median = 2900

ii) Given lower quartile range is 2350, Calculate the interquartile range of the seal service life
in hours.

Q3= 3100

IQR = 3100 – 2350 = 750 (approx)
