GPON Tracer Getting Started Guide
Introduction
Congratulations for purchasing TraceSpan’s GPON Tracer.
Before using your GPON Tracer for the first time, please verify the following
items were included with your GPON Tracer package:
• GPON Tracer
• Power supply/battery charger
• AC power cord
• USB Cable
• Ethernet Cable
• Two (2) Optical Fiber Jumpers
• GPON Tracer™ Getting Started Guide
• Carrying case (may be shipped separately)
TraceSpan’s GPON Tracer is an advanced handheld tester for on-site GPON
network monitoring and troubleshooting. It is the ideal tool for telecom field
engineers involved in GPON network troubleshooting, as well as for customer
support teams of OLT and ONU manufacturers. With its user-friendly touch-screen
interface, GPON Tracer provides a rich variety of real-time indications in textual
and graphical formats, including downstream and upstream data rates, optical
power levels, transmission errors, and service interruptions.
The GPON Tracer can be connected on the OLT side or the ONU side of the PON.
OLT-side connection offers full PON visibility, with full upstream and
downstream measurements. ONU-side connection provides full ONU-specific
measurements.
The GPON Tracer also supports recording and export of GPON protocol data and
user data for extensive analysis by the GPON Xpert™ multi-layer analyzer.
This Getting Started Guide provides instructions for connecting the GPON Tracer
to the OLT and ONU sides, and explains GPON Tracer operation so you can
quickly benefit from its advanced functionality.

Overview
Hardware Overview
The GPON Tracer (Figure 1) is compact and ergonomic, with a touch-screen and
built-in stylus for accessing and performing all functions.
For detailed GPON Tracer specifications, see Appendix A.
Optical connectors for the three different connections modes (see GPON Fiber
Connectivity) are located at the top of the GPON Tracer. Each set of connectors is
covered by a lid that should remain closed when not in use.
5
GPON Tracer Getting Started Guide
In OLT serial mode, use single mode SC/APC fibers to connect the PON to the top
left of the GPON Tracer, as shown in Figure 2.
For OLT parallel mode, four LC/APC connectors are located on the top, middle of
the GPON Tracer as shown in Figure 3. The GPON Tracer comes factory-installed
with jumpers between the two Down connectors and the two Up connectors. In
parallel mode, remove the jumpers and connect the downstream traffic to the right
connector of the left pair, and connect the upstream traffic to the left connector of
the right pair.
Note
For serial mode connections, these jumpers must remain connected. Failure to
follow this may result in improper operation of the GPON Tracer.
6
GPON Tracer Getting Started Guide
In ONU serial mode, use single mode SC/APC fibers to connect the PON to the top
right of the GPON Tracer, as shown in Figure 4.
Three connectors are located on the bottom of the GPON Tracer, as shown in
Figure 5:
• LAN connector - used for exporting recording files (see File Management).
• USB connector - used for management of report files and US Analysis files
(see File Management) and for firmware and license upgrades (see
Maintenance).
• Power connector - used to charge the unit.

Interface Overview
Most screens display the GPON status, an upper menu and a lower menu. These
menus contain navigation and operational functions (Figure 6).
8
GPON Tracer Getting Started Guide
To display the Home screen (Figure 7), touch the Home icon in the lower menu of
most screens. The Home screen contains the following icons for navigation:
• Measure - for viewing measurement results and graphs, and starting and
stopping a recording.
• Settings - for configuring the GPON Tracer (see Appendix B).
• File Management - for viewing, exporting and deleting measurement
recording files.
• Maintenance - for updating firmware and licenses.
9
GPON Tracer Getting Started Guide
The Connection screen (Figure 8) appears when first selecting the Measure option
or when selecting the Connection Mode option from the Settings screen, and
contains options for connecting near the OLT or near the ONU (see GPON Fiber
Connectivity).
10
GPON Tracer Getting Started Guide
After connecting to the PON, the GPON Tracer displays the main measurement
screen (Figure 9). OLT measurements appear on the left and ONU measurements
on the right.
Note
Figure 9 represents an example of the measurement screen when connecting near
the OLT. When connecting near the ONU the screen will look different and will
present the information described in Table 4 in the ONU Connection Mode
column.

An icon near each ONU and measurement indicates its status (see Table 1).

OLT-Side Connection
When connected at the OLT side, the GPON Tracer monitors traffic for all ONUs
on the PON. As the OLT is typically located at a central location, an OLT-side
connection is generally very convenient. You can connect the GPON Tracer to the
PON either serially or in parallel:
• Serial connection (Figure 10) - all PON traffic passes through the GPON
Tracer. Therefore, while connecting, the service is temporarily disrupted.
Service is not affected after connecting is completed and the GPON Tracer is
configured.
• Parallel connection (Figure 11) - the GPON Tracer connects to the PON via a
splitter installed at the OLT to provide test access to upstream and downstream
traffic. In this case, no service disruption occurs, since fibers are not
disconnected while connecting the GPON Tracer. For timing calibration, re-
activate at least one of the ONUs after the GPON Tracer is connected.
13
GPON Tracer Getting Started Guide
ONU-Side Connection
When connected on the ONU side, the GPON Tracer monitors traffic for the
nearby ONU through a serial connection (Figure 12). Service is disrupted only
when connecting the GPON Tracer to the PON (see Measuring and Recording).

File Management
The File Management screen allows you to export recording files saved on the
GPON Tracer to a PC for analysis, generate HTML reports on the PC from GPON
Tracer measurements and view and export US Analysis graphs. It also allows you
to delete the recording files, measurement files and US Analysis files saved on the
GPON Tracer.
To manage recording files saved on GPON Tracer
1. Verify that the GPON Tracer is connected via Ethernet to a PC running the
GPON Tracer Manager application.
2. On the GPON Tracer Home screen, touch File Management and select the
Records tab at the bottom of the screen.
3. On the PC run the GPON Tracer Manager application, select the Transfer
Recording File option and follow the instructions on the GPON Tracer
Manager screen and in the GPON Tracer Manager User's Guide.
• To delete a file, touch Delete File.
• To delete all files, touch Delete All.
4. Disconnect the Ethernet cable between the GPON Tracer and the PC.
