HOW TO USE THIS COMPETENCY-BASED LEARNING MATERIAL
Welcome to the Module Providing Care and Support to Infants

and Toddlers. This module contains training materials for and activities
for you to complete.
The unit of competency “Provide Care and Support to Infants

and Toddlers” contained the knowledge and skills and attitudes required
for Caregiving. It is one of the specialized modules at National Certificate
Level II (NC II).
You are required to do through a series of learning activities in order

to complete each learning outcomes of the module. In each learning
outcome there are Instruction Sheets to help you better understand the
required activities. Follow these activities on your own and answer the self
check at the end of each learning outcome. You may remove a blank
answer sheet at the end of each module to write your answers for each
self-check. If you have questions, don’t hesitate to ask your facilitator for
assistance.
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
You may already have some or most of the knowledge and skills
covered in this learners guide because you have:
 Been working for some time

 Already completed training in this area
If you can demonstrate to your trainer that you are competent in a

particular outcome, you don’t have to do the same training again. Talk to
your trainer about having them formally recognized. If you have a
qualification or certificate of competence from previous training, show it to
your trainer. If the skills you acquired are still current and relevant to the
unit/s of competency they may become part of evidence you can present
to RPL. If you are not sure about the currency of your skills discuss this
with your trainer.
After completing this module ask your trainer to assess your

competency. Result of your assessment will be recorded in your
competency profile. All the learning activities are designed for you to
complete at your own pace.

INTRODUCTION
An understanding of child’s care since it began is essential for

the health aid or caregiver to gain an appreciation of the trends
leading to our present concepts and practices specific to children.
Some of today’s philosophic beliefs can be attributed to evolving
civilization.
In this module you will be able to recognize the needs of infants

and toddlers ages from birth to three years, know the different skills
and attitude required in providing them care and support, and identify
the paraphernalia needed for such care.
You will also review underpinning knowledge about the normal

growth and development of Infants/Toddlers and their signs of
distress.
After doing the learning activities in this module you will be

assessed by your instructor to evaluate knowledge and skills
acquired.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
1. Comfort infants and toddlers
2. Bath and dress infants and toddlers
3. Feed infants and toddlers
4. Put infants and toddlers to sleep
5. Enhance social, physical, intellectual, creative and

emotional activities of infants and toddlers.
PERFORMANCE CRITERIA
All standard of performance for providing care and support to
infants and toddlers is in accordance with company or establishment
standard operating procedure required by Health, Social, and other
Community Development Services Sector to provide a high quality
service.
1. COMFORT INFANTS AND TODDLERS
1.1 Tools and equipment prepared according to the need of the

infant/toddler
1.2 Distressed infants and toddlers responded to based on

appropriate methods, activity and non-verbal cues
1.3 Infants and toddlers picked-up and cuddled according to

procedure
2. BATHE AND DRESS INFANTS AND TODDLERS
2.1 Checked the infants and toddlers’ vital signs based on procedure
2.2 Checked the water quantity and temperature as per

requirement.
2.3 Bathed infants and toddlers according to procedure.
2.4 Made comforters available to infants and toddlers when needed.
3. FEED INFANTS AND TODDLERS
3.1 Cleaned and sterilized the infants and toddlers’ feeding bottles
as needed.
3.2 Prepared the milk formula as prescribed.
3.3 Fed and burped the infant according to established procedure.
4. PUT INFANTS AND TODDLERS TO SLEEP
4.1 Infants and toddlers’ crib prepared based on procedure
4.2 Infants and toddlers’ put to sleep based on procedure
5. ENHANCE SOCIAL, PHYSICAL, INTELLECTUAL, CREATIVE AND

EMOTIONAL ACTIVITIES OF INFANTS AND TODDLERS
5.1 Infants and toddlers exposed to family members, relatives and
playmates for communication and interaction purposes
5.2 Infants/toddlers provided with manipulative or creative toys

and games as needed.
5.3 Infants/toddlers given exercise activities as required
