Testing of hypothesis is one of the most important procedures in the field of statistics. It
involves the use of statistics in establishing the probability of a given hypothesis being false or
true (Bluman). The five critical step of testing the hypothesis include
degree of freedom.

The mean deviation for these 6 diamond weights is 0.53 while their standard deviation is 0.0559.
t=(xx - μ)/(s/√n)
=(0.53-0.5)/(0.0559/√(6))
= 1.3145
This test statistic as with a majority of other large-sample tests offers the grounds for
either accepting or rejecting the Ho. However, the decision is largely based on the distance from

One can reject the null hypothesis, if t > t0.05 =2.015 as figure 1 shows

Given that the test statistic’s calculated value is 1.32 and hence fails to leans towards the
region of rejection, it is not practical to reject the null; hypothesis. Consequently, the data does
not offer enough proof to show that the mean diamond weight surpass 5 karats.
