LISTENING SECTION

In this section of the test, you will have the chance to show how well you understand spoken
English. There are four parts to this section, with special directions for each part.

Part I
Questions 1 to 3

Directions:
In this part of the test, you will hear some dialogues spoken in English. The dialogue will be
spoken twice. They will not be printed on your test sheet, so you must listen carefully to
understand what the speakers are saying.

After you hear a dialogue and the question about it, read the five possible answers and decide
which one would be the best answer to the question you have heard. Now listen to a sample
question.

You will hear:

Man: How is the meal?


Woman: It’s very delicious. I never thought you could do it.
Man: Every weekend I always help my mother to cook.
Woman: I’m ashamed I don’t do that.

You will also hear:


Narrator: What does the woman admire?

You will read on your test sheet:

A. The man’s cooking.


B. The way the man cooks.
C. The man’s mother’s meal.
D. The man’s diligence in cooking.
E. How the man spend his weekend.

The best answer to the question ‘What does the woman admire?’ is choice (A), ‘The man’s
cooking’. Therefore, you should answer choice (A).

Girl: Hi, I’m wearing a new gown, my mother gave. She bought it yesterday. What do you think
of the colour?
Boy: It suits you. You look nicer and prettier.
Girl: Oh, really?
Boy: Sure! It’s perfect.
Girl: Thank you.

Part II
Questions 4 to 8

Directions:
In this part of the test, you will hear several questions or statements spoken in English followed
by four responses, also spoken in English. The questions and responses will be spoken twice.
They will not be printed on your test sheet, so you must listen carefully to understand what the
speakers are saying. You have to choose the best response to each question or statement.

Now listen to a sample question.

Questions 9 to 12

Directions:
In this part of the test, you will hear some monologues spoken in English. The monologues will
be spoken twice. They will not be printed on your test sheet, so you must listen carefully to
understand what the speakers are saying. After you listen to a monologue, look at the five
pictures provided on your test sheet, and decide which one would be most suitable with the
monologue you have heard.

This monologue is for question 9.


There are five famous temples in central Java, namely Borobudur, Prambanan, Mendut, Kalasan,
and Pawon. Borobudur, Mendut, and Pawon are important Buddhist temples that are located in
one straight line across Progo River.
Mendut Temple is located 3 kilometres south of Borobudur Temple. It lies in Mendut
village. It was built in the ninth century by King Indra of the Syailendra Dynasty. It is the oldest
temple among Borobudur and Pawon Temples. During the Vesak ceremony, Mendut Temple is
the starting point of silent march in procession to Borobudur temple.

The Eskimos are the indigenous people living at the North Pole. They inhabit the area from
Siberia (in Russia), Alaska (in the US), and Greenland. There are two subgroups of Eskimos: the
Inuit and the Yupik. The Inuit inhabit Canada, Northern Alaska, and Greenland, whereas the
Yupik live in Siberia and Alaska.
Both Yupik and Inuit people have good survival capabilities to live in extremely cold areas.
Some people say that they eat raw meat to cope with the cold. They live in igloos, or snow
houses.

Here are five young girls. They are all my new friends from Australia. I like Bertha most,
because she is very cheerful. Bertha looks happy all the time, as though everything has gone
well. She has short, straight hair. She is full of spirit. She shows self-confidence by laughing
happily. She laughs, opening her mouth widely and showing her white teeth.

Researchers report that many animals are endangered. Their population is tiny, almost extinct.
Among them are rhinoceroses, elephants, tigers, lions, and orangutans.
Today we’ll talk about orangutans. They are unique because their faces are similar to the
human face. They live in the rainforests of Kalimantan Island. The name comes from a Malay
word that means “man of the forest”. Researchers report that the population of orangutans is
declining very quickly, due to the mass deforestation in Kalimantan Island due to plantations and
coal mining. The governments of Indonesia and Malaysia are very concerned about this situation.

Questions 13 to 15

Directions:
In this part of the test, you will hear several monologues. Each monologue will be spoken twice.
They will not be printed on your test sheet, so you must listen carefully to understand what the
speakers are saying.
After you hear the monologue and the question about it, read the five possible answers and
decide which one would be the best answer to the question you have heard.

This monologue is for questions 13 to 15.


A long time ago, there lived a very hard-working farmer. His name was Toba. He lived in a hut
next to the forest. Every day he worked in his field to grow rice and vegetables. One day, he went
fishing in a river. Soon, he was very surprised, because he caught a big fish. It was as big as a
human being. Then, he went home and took the fish with him. He put the fish in the kitchen. He
planned to cook the fish for dinner.
After having taken a bath, he was very surprised to find a beautiful girl in his hut.
“Who are you?” he asked the girl.
“I am the fish you caught,” said the girl. “I thank you for making me human again. To
express my gratitude, I am ready to be your servant,” the girl added. From then on, she lived in
the hut.
Because she was very beautiful, Toba fell in love with her, then married her. She agreed on
condition that Toba not tell anybody about her past. They had a child, namely Samosir. Soon
Samosir grew into a handsome boy. However, Samosir was a very lazy boy. He did not help his
father when he worked in the field. He slept and ate a lot. Toba was very disappointed in him.
One day, Toba was very angry. He worked hard in the field but his wife never brought his lunch.
Then, he found that Samosir had eaten all his lunch. He could not stand the situation and said,
“You’re a son of a fish.” It hurt Samosir and he went to his mother. He told her everything about
his father’s anger. Then, Samosir and his mother disappeared and water soon filled the place. It
became a very big lake, with an island in its centre.
