sopropyl alcohol dissolves a wide

range of non-polar compounds. It
also evaporates quickly, leaves
nearly zero oil traces, compared to
ethanol, and is relatively non-toxic,
compared to alternative solvents.
Thus, it is used widely as a solvent
and as a cleaning fluid, especially
for dissolving oils.

ETHYL ALCOHOL

This colorless liquid has a

characteristic sweet smell (similar to
pear drops) and is used in glues, nail
polish removers, decaffeinating tea
and coffee. Ethyl acetate is the
ester of ethanol and acetic acid; it is

for use as a solvent. It is used as antifreeze, solvent,
fuel, and as a denaturant for
ethanol. The chemical is also used
to produce biodiesel via
transesterification reaction.
Because methanol
has toxic properties, it is
frequently used as a denaturant
additive for ethanol manufactured
for industrial purposes.

ORGANIC COMPOUNDS AND THEIR USES

Uses. Acetic acid is a chemical reagent for theproduction of

chemical compounds. The largest single use of acetic acid is in
the production of vinyl acetate monomer, closely followed by
aceticanhydride and ester production. The volume of acetic
acid used in vinegar is comparatively small.

It is a highly volatile hydrocarbon derived from crude oil. In its

natural state gasoline is a liquid with a strong solvent smell.
Typically it is used to fuel internal combustion engines for cars,
motorbikes, trucks, boats and other transport vehicles.

Paraffin wax is a waxy solid extracted from

petroleum. Kerosene is widely used to power jet engines of
aircraft (jet fuel) and some rocket engines and is also
commonly used as a cooking and lighting fuel and for fire
toys such as poi.

Ethanol is used in medical wipes and most common

antibacterial hand sanitizer gels as an antiseptic. Ethanol
kills organisms by denaturing their proteins and dissolving
their lipids and is effective against most bacteria and fungi,
and many viruses. However, ethanol is ineffective against
bacterial spores.
