ABSTRACT
Background
Open defecation free (ODF) is an act of removing dirt or feces in fields, rivers, or other
open areas which prevent contamination of the environment, soil, air, and water. In
2010, WHO estimated that 81% of open defecation population were in 10 countries
including Indonesia. In 2016, 75% of ODF number was reported in Talangsuko village,
Turen District, East Java, Indonesia. Based on data obtained from interview with local
citizen, the lack of awareness and misperception towards the importance of having
toilet turned to be the biggest reason behind the low ODF number.
Purpose
To raise awareness and change perception of local community towards ODF and the
importance of having toilet.
Methodology
Empowering 20 chosen students from Hasyim Asy’ari Junior High School to be ODF cadres
named SI TANGGAP through pre and post-test, cadres education using emo-demonstrations,
video, SGD, and taking commitments to change the community attitude and perception
towards ODF by delivering counseling to their families and peers using campaign kit.
Result
Increase of 73% in the post test result illustrating improvement in their ODF knowledge
while the completed logbook indicating cadres had successfully delivered education to
their families and peers. The rate of ODF in Talangsuko has increased to 100% in 2018
showing a significant improvement in the community attitude towards ODF. Various
projects with the same purpose were organized every 3 months to ensure the
sustainability of the effort in achieving ODF.
Conclusion
The cadres formation and program implementation measured by checklist, logbook, and
post test had successfully improved their knowledge to deliver education regarding ODF in
their society to which in long term period had successfully take role in increasing the
number of toilet usage in Talangsuko.
