The
Holy
Spirit
1 2
I
believe
in
the
eternal
deity
and
personality
of
the
Holy
Spirit
whose
ministry
it
is
to
convict
of
sin,
bear
3
4
witness
to
Jesus
Christ, and
baptize
the
repentant,
believing
sinner
into
the
Body
of
Christ.
At
the
new
5
6
birth
the
Spirit
imparts
spiritual
life
(regeneration), permanently
indwells
the
believer, and
becomes
the
7
seal
of
divine
ownership
and
earnest
that
guarantees
the
final
salvation
of
the
believer. I
believe
in
the
filling
of
the
Holy
Spirit—the
controlling
of
the
believer
by
the
Spirit
in
proportion
to
his
yieldedness
and
8 9
obedience
to
God
and
the
Word —that
is
evidenced
by
the
fruit
of
the
Spirit
in
the
life.

The
Fall
of
Man
1 2
I
believe
that
man
was
created
directly
by
God
on
Day
Six
of
the
creation
week,
in
His
image
(a
finite,
creaturely
replication
of
the
infinite
Creator),
and
in
a
state
of
sinlessness
or
innocence,
righteousness,
3
4
and
holiness. I
believe
that
originally
man
freely
chose
to
transgress
the
expressed
will
of
God
and
5
6
7
thereby
mankind
incurred
sin, condemnation, and
physical
and
spiritual
death, so
that
man
is
a
sinner
8
by
nature
and
by
choice,
and
is
totally
depraved,
destitute
of
any
moral
good,
and
utterly
unable
to
merit
9
God's
favor
or
contribute
to
his
salvation.

I

salvation
is
wholly
of
God
by
grace
on
the
basis
of
the
redemption
of
Jesus
Christ,
the
merit
of
His
shed
blood,
and
not
on
the
basis
of
human
merit
or
works
(John
1:12;
Ephesians
1:7;
2:8
10;
1
Peter
1:18
19).
Regeneration
I
believe
that
regeneration
is
a
supernatural
work
of
the
Holy
Spirit
by
which
the
divine
nature
and
divine
life
are
given
(John
3:3
7;
Titus
3:5).
It
is
instantaneous
and
is
accomplished
solely
by
the
power
of
the
Holy
Spirit
through
the
instrumentality
of
the
Word
of
God
(John
5:24),
when
the
repentant
sinner,
as
enabled
by
the
Holy
Spirit,
responds
in
faith
to
the
divine
provision
of
salvation.
Genuine
regeneration
is
manifested
by
fruits
worthy
of
repentance
as
demonstrated
in
righteous
attitudes
and
conduct.
Good
works
will
be
its
proper
evidence
and
fruit
(1
Corinthians
6:19
20;
Ephesians
2:10),
and
will
be
experienced
to
the
extent
that
the
believer
submits
to
the
control
of
the
Holy
Spirit
in
his
life
through
faithful
obedience
to
the
Word
of
God
(Ephesians
5:17
21;
Philippians
2:12b;
Colossians
3:16;
2
Peter
1:4
10).
This
obedience
causes
the
believer
to
be
increasingly
conformed
to
the
image
of
our
Lord
Jesus
Christ
(2
Corinthians
3:18).
Such
a
conformity
is
climaxed
in
the
believer's
glorification
at
Christ's
coming
(Romans
8:17;
2
Peter
1:4;
1
John
3:2
3).

Doctrinal
Statement
and
Positions
Election
I
believe
that
election
is
the
act
of
God
by
which,
before
the
foundation
of
the
world,
He
chose
in
Christ
those
whom
He
graciously
regenerates,
saves,
and
sanctifies
(Romans
8:28
30;
Ephesians
1:4
11;
2
Thessalonians
2:13;
2
Timothy
2:10;
1
Peter
1:1
2).
I
believe
that
election
is
sovereign
-‐
God's
sovereign
and
free
choice.
This
election
is
eternal
even
as
God's
counsel
is
eternal.
This
election
is
unchangeable
even
as
God's
counsel
is
unchangeable.
This
election
is
efficacious
so
that
the
decree
of
election
itself
is,
through
Christ,
the
power
by
which
the
elect
are
actually
saved.
I
believe
in
unconditional
election.
I
believe
that
sovereign
election
does
not
contradict
or
negate
the
responsibility
of
man
to
repent
and
trust
Christ
as
Savior
and
Lord
(Ezekiel
18:23,
32;
33:11;
John
3:18
19,
36;
5:40;
Romans
9:22
23;
2
Thessalonians
2:10
12;
Revelation
22:17).
Nevertheless,
since
sovereign
grace
includes
the
means
of
receiving
the
gift
of
salvation
as
well
as
the
gift
itself,
sovereign
election
will
result
in
what
God
determines.
All
whom
the
Father
calls
to
Himself
will
come
in
faith
and
all
who
come
in
faith
the
Father
will
receive
(John
6:37
40,
44;
Acts
13:48;
James
4:8).
I
believe
that
the
unmerited
favor
that
God
grants
to
totally
depraved
sinners
is
not
related
to
any
initiative
of
their
own
part
nor
to
God's
anticipation
of
what
they
might
do
by
their
own
will,
but
is
solely
of
His
sovereign
grace
and
mercy
(Ephesians
1:4
7;
Titus
3:4
7;
1
Peter
1:2).
I
believe
that
election
is
definite
and
particular.
God
knows
His
own
from
before
the
foundation
of
the
world
and
chooses
them,
knowing
their
names
and
penning
their
names
on
the
pages
of
the
Book
of
Life.
So
that
each
one
stands
before
God's
mind
and
heart
eternally
as
the
object
of
His
love.
I
believe
that
election
should
not
be
looked
upon
as
based
merely
on
abstract
sovereignty.
God
is
truly
sovereign
but
He
exercises
this
sovereignty
in
harmony
with
His
other
attributes,
especially
His
omniscience,
justice,
holiness,
wisdom,
grace,
and
love
(Romans
9:11
16).
This
sovereignty
will
always
exalt
the
will
of
God
in
a
manner
totally
consistent
with
His
character
as
revealed
in
the
life
of
our
Lord
Jesus
Christ
(Matthew
11:25
28;
2
Timothy
1:9).
• John
15:16:
"
You
did
not
choose
Me,
but
I
chose
you
and
appointed
you
that
you
should
go
and
bear
fruit,
and
that
your
fruit
should
remain,
that
whatever
you
ask
the
Father
in
My
name
He
may
give
you
"
• Acts
13:48:
"Now
when
the
Gentiles
heard
this,
they
were
glad
and
glorified
the
word
of
the
Lord.
And
as
many
as
had
been
appointed
to
eternal
life
believed."
• Romans
8:29-‐30,
“For
whom
He
foreknew,
He
also
predestined
to
be
conformed
to
the
image
of
His
Son,
30
that
He
might
be
the
firstborn
among
many
brethren.
Moreover
whom
He
predestined,
these
He
also
called;
whom
He
called,
these
He
also
justified;
and
whom
He
justified,
these
He
also
glorified.”
• Romans
9:15-‐16:
"
For
He
says
to
Moses,
“I
will
have
mercy
on
whomever
I
will
have
mercy,
and
I
will
have
16
compassion
on
whomever
I
will
have
compassion.”
So
then
it
is
not
of
him
who
wills,
nor
of
him
who
runs,
but
of
God
who
shows
mercy.
"
• Romans
9:22-‐24:
"
What
if
God,
wanting
to
show
His
wrath
and
to
make
His
power
known,
endured
with
23
much
longsuffering
the

prepared
for

and
that
He
might
make
known
the
24
riches
of
His
glory
on
the
vessels
of
mercy,
which
He
had
prepared
beforehand
for
glory,
even
us
whom
He
called,
not
of
the
Jews
only,
but
also
of
the
Gentiles?

Doctrinal
Statement
and
Positions
Justification
I
believe
that
justification
before
God
is
an
act
of
God
(Romans
8:33)
by
which
He
declares
righteous
those
who,
through
faith
in
Christ,
repent
of
their
sins
(Luke
13:3;
Acts
2:38;
3:19;
11:18;
Romans
2:4;
2
Corinthians
7:10;
Isaiah
55:6
7)
and
confess
Him
as
sovereign
Lord
(Romans
10:9
10;
1
Corinthians
12:3;
2
Corinthians
4:5;
Philippians
2:11).
This
righteousness
is
apart
from
any
virtue
or
work
of
man
(Romans
3:20;
4:6)
and
involves
the
imputation
of
our
sins
to
Christ
(Colossians
2:14;
1
Peter
2:24)
and
the
imputation
of
Christ's
righteousness
to
us
(1
Corinthians
1:30;
2
Corinthians
5:21).
By
this
means
God
is
enabled
to
"be
just
and
the
justifier
of
the
one
who
has
faith
in
Jesus"
(Romans
3:26).
Sanctification
I
believe
that
every
believer
is
sanctified
(set
apart)
unto
God
by
justification
and
is
therefore
declared
to
be
holy
and
is
therefore
identified
as
a
saint.
This
sanctification
is
positional
and
instantaneous
and
should
not
be
confused
with
progressive
sanctification.
This
sanctification
has
to
do
with
the
believer's
standing,
not
his
present
walk
or
condition
(Acts
20:32;
1
Corinthians
1:2,
30;
6:11;
2
Thessalonians
2:13;
Hebrews
2:11;
3:1;
10:10,
14;
13:12;
1
Peter
1:2).
I
believe
that
there
is
also
by
the
work
of
the
Holy
Spirit
a
progressive
sanctification
by
which
the
state
of
the
believer
is
brought
closer
to
the
standing
the
believer
positionally
enjoys
through
justification.
Through
obedience
to
the
Word
of
God
and
the
empowering
of
the
Holy
Spirit,
the
believer
is
able
to
live
a
life
of
increasing
holiness
in
conformity
to
the
will
of
God,
becoming
more
and
more
like
our
Lord
Jesus
Christ
(John
17:17,19;
Romans
6:1
22;
2
Corinthians
3:18;
1
Thessalonians
4:3
4;
5:23).
In
this
respect,
I
believe
that
every
saved
person
is
involved
in
a
daily
conflict—the
new
creation
in
Christ
doing
battle
against
the
flesh—but
adequate
provision
is
made
for
victory
through
the
power
of
the
indwelling
Holy
Spirit.
The
struggle
nevertheless
stays
with
the
believer
all
through
this
earthly
life
and
is
never
completely
ended.
All
claims
to
the
eradication
of
sin
in
this
life
are
unscriptural.
Eradication
of
sin
is
not
possible,
but
the
Holy
Spirit
does
provide
for
victory
over
sin
(Galatians
5:16
25;
Ephesians
4:22
24;
Philippians
3:12;
Colossians
3:9
10;
1
Peter
1:14
16;
1
John
3:5
9).
Security
I
believe
that
all
the
redeemed
once
saved
are
kept
by
God's
power
and
are
thus
secure
in
Christ
forever
(John
5:24;
6:37
40;
10:27
30;
Romans
5:9
10;
8:1,
31
39;
1
Corinthians
1:4
8;
Ephesians
4:30;
Hebrews
7:25;
13:5;
1
Peter
1:5;
Jude
24).
I
believe
that
it
is
the
privilege
of
believers
to
rejoice
in
the
assurance
of
their
salvation
through
the
testimony
of
God's
Word,
which,
however,
clearly
forbids
the
use
of
Christian
liberty
as
an
occasion
for
sinful
living
and
carnality
(Romans
6:15
22;
13:13
14;
Galatians
5:13,
25
26;
Titus
2:11
14).
Separation
I
believe
that
separation
from
sin
is
clearly
called
for
throughout
the
Old
and
New
Testaments,
and
that
the
Scriptures
clearly
indicate
that
in
the
last
days
apostasy
and
worldliness
shall
increase
(2
Corinthians
6:14-‐7:1;
2
Timothy
3:1
5).
Out
of
deep
gratitude
for
the
undeserved
grace
of
God
granted
to
believers
and
because
our
glorious
God
is
so
worthy
of
our
total
consecration,
all
the
saved
should
live
in
such
a
manner
as
to
demonstrate
our
adoring
love
to
God
and
so
as
not
to
bring
reproach
upon
our
Lord
and
Savior.
Separation
from
all
religious
apostasy
and
worldly
and
sinful
practices
is
commanded
by
God
(Romans
12:1
2,
1
Corinthians
5:9

2
Corinthians
6:14-‐7:1;

John
2:15

I
believe
that
believers
should
be
separated
unto
our
Lord
Jesus
Christ
(2
Thessalonians
1:11
12;
Hebrews
12:1
2)
and
affirm
that
the
Christian
life
is
a
life
of
obedient
righteousness
that
reflects
the
teaching
of
the
Beatitudes
(Matthew
5:2
12)
and
a
continual
pursuit
of
holiness
(Romans
12:1
2;
2
Corinthians
7:1;
Hebrews
12:14;
Titus
2:11
14;

John
3:1

Spiritual
Gifts
I
believe
that
a
spiritual
gift
is
an
ability
or
a
capacity
to
serve
the
Lord
through
an
aspect
of
the
life
of
the
1
local
church.
While
God
is
sovereign
in
the
bestowment
of
all
His
spiritual
gifts,
every
believer
has
a
2
function
to
serve
in
the
church
and
has
been
gifted
by
God
accordingly. Gifts
were
given
for
the
common
3
4 5
good
of
the
church, the
edification
of
the
church,
the
service
work
or
ministry
of
the
church, and
the
6
attestation
or
accreditation
of
God's
messengers
and
their
new
revelation
for
the
church
age.
I
believe
that
certain
gifts
prevalent
in
the
church
in
the
first
century
were
miraculous
in
nature,
such
as
speaking
in
tongues,
interpretation
of
tongues,
prophecy,
and
the
working
of
miracles.
They
were
foundational
and
transitional,
having
served
the
church
in
its
infancy
and
immature
stage.
These
gifts
have
ceased,
being
no
longer
needed
because
the
nation
of
Israel
has
dissolved,
the
Scriptures
have
been
given,
the
church
has
been
launched
and
divinely
certified,
the
transition
from
Law
to
Grace
has
been
made,
and
the
apostles
7
have
gone
to
their
eternal
reward.

Satan
1
I
believe
in
the
reality
of
Satan
as
a
distinct
personality,
who,
though
having
been
created
in
a
state
of
2
perfection
and
enjoying
a
heavenly
abode
with
God,
was
prompted
by
pride
to
rebel
against
God
and
fell
3
4
from
his
original
exalted
state, leading
a
multitude
of
other
angels
in
his
revolt,
over
whom
he
is
king.
5
Satan
is
the
acknowledged
god
of
his
world and
the
archenemy
of
God
and
believers,
whose
purpose
and
6
7
work
are
to
thwart
the
divine
counsels, accuse
and
oppose
believers, incite
persecution
against
8 9
10
believers,
sow
counterfeits
among
the
believers, tempt
believers
to
sin,
among
others.
Satan
will
be
11 12
cast
down
to
earth
during
the
Tribulation
Period,
bound
in
the
abyss
during
the
Millennium, loosed
13
after
the
Millennium
for
a
little
season
to
provoke
the
final
rebellion
of
mankind
against
God,
and
finally
14
consigned
forever
to
the
lake
of
fire
as
the
execution
of
his
sentence
of
judgment
at
Calvary.

The
Church
I
believe
that
the
Church
as
set
forth
in
the
New
Testament
has
both
a
universal
and
a
local
aspect.
The
1
church
as
the
Body
of
Christ,
of
which
Christ
is
the
Head,
is
an
organism
composed
of
genuine
believers
in
Jesus
Christ,
the
total
number
of
Spirit
baptized
believers
of
this
age
regardless
of
location
or
2
circumstances.
I
believe
that
a
local
church
is
the
visible
expression
of
the
body
of
Christ
in
a
particular
3
4
time
and
place, being
an
organized
body
of
immersed
believers,
sharing
a
common
faith
or
body
of
5
6
7
8
truth, observing
the
ordinances
of
baptism and
communion, meeting
at
regular
and
stated
times
for
9
10
worship,
preaching
and
teaching,
fellowship,
and
prayer, carrying
out
the
Great
Commission,
and
11 12
whose
biblical
offices
are
pastor
and
deacon. I
believe
that
the
local
church
is
an
autonomous
body
13 14
solely
responsible
to
preserve
its
internal
unity,
maintain
pure
doctrine
and
practice, elect
its
own
15 16
officers,
leaders,
and
messengers,
settle
its
own
internal
affairs,
and
determine
the
extent
of
its
17
cooperation
with
other
churches.
I
believe
that
the
institution
of
the
local
church
is
God's
ordained
18
instrument
for
His
work
and
witness
in
this
age.

The
Second
Coming
I
believe
in
the
literal
return
of
Jesus
Christ
that
will
take
place
in
two
stages.
The
first
stage
is
the
1 2
3
4
Rapture,
or
His
personal,
imminent, and
pretribulational coming
for
all
saints
of
the
church
age.
The
second
stage
is
the
Revelation
or
the
Second
Coming
in
Glory,
which
is
His
personal
and
public
coming
at
5
the
close
of
the
Tribulation
Period
to
establish
the
messianic,
Millennial
Kingdom
on
the
earth when
6
7
Israel
will
be
restored
to
covenant
favor
with
God and
to
her
land
in
faith and
the
Church
will
reign
with
8
Christ
for
the
thousand
years.
After
the
Millennium
there
will
be
a
new
heaven
and
earth
wherein
God
9
will
dwell
eternally
with
His
people.

The
Resurrection
1
I
believe
in
the
bodily
resurrection
of
the
just
and
the
unjust,
though
occurring
at
separate
intervals.
The
2
souls
of
those
who
trust
in
Christ
go
immediately
into
His
presence
at
death where
they
remain
in
a
state
3
of
conscious
bliss
until
the
resurrection
of
the
just,
at
which
time
they
will
receive
their
glorified
bodies,
4
and
thereafter
spend
eternity
serving
the
Lord
in
unending
fellowship
and
love.
The
souls
of
unbelievers
5
go
immediately
into
a
state
of
conscious
torment
and
punishment
at
death, where
they
remain
until
the
resurrection
of
the
unjust,
when
they
will
be
cast
into
the
lake
of
fire
to
endure
eternal
suffering
as
a
just
6
retribution
for
their
sin. The
resurrection
of
the
just
begins
at
the
Rapture
of
the
Church
and
is
completed
7
8
at
the
conclusion
of
the
Tribulation
Period. The
resurrection
of
the
unjust
is
after
the
Millennium.

Miscellaneous
Positions
Since
I
am
often
asked
about
these
issues
I
address
them
here.
1. I
prefer
the
New
King
James
Version
of
the
Bible.
I
also
use
and
value
the
King
James
Version,
the
New
American
Standard
Version,
and
the
English
Standard
Version
2. I
consider
myself
a
Baptist
in
the
historical
sense
of
the
word
(cf
the
London
Baptist
Confession)
3. I
believe
that
Old
Testament
tithing
is
of
the
law
and
that
the
New
Testament
teaching
of
grace
giving
supplants
and
abrogates
tithing
(2
Corinthians
8
&
1
Corinthians
16)
a. To
give
liberally
(2
Corinthians
8:2)
b. Freely
(2
Corinthians
8:3)
c. First
of
one’s
own
self
to
the
Lord
(2
Corinthians
8:5)
d. Readily
(2
Corinthians
8:11)
e. The
Christian
is
to
abound
in
grace
giving
(2
Corinthians
8:7)
f. The
Christian
is
to
give
“as
he
may
prosper”
(1
Corinthians
16:2)
g. He
is
to
give
“On
the
first
day
of
the
week”
(1
Corinthians
16:2)
4. I
do
not
believe
that
the
New
Testament
teaches
total
abstinence
from
alcoholic
drink,
but
I
do
believe
that
it
is
a
good
testimony
to
abstain.
Romans
14
addresses
the
issue
and
presents
the
correct
balance
between
love
for
others
and
liberty
(vs
21,
“It
is
good
neither
to
eat
meat
nor
drink
wine
nor
do
anything
by
which
your
brother
stumbles
or
is
offended
or
is
made
weak”).
Leaders
in
particular
are
enjoined
to
“not
[be]
given
to
wine”
(I
Timothy
3:3)
5. I
consider
myself
a
Calvinist
with
regard
to
Soteriology
and
believe
in
the
“doctrines
of
grace”.
For
reference
consider
The
Doctrines
of
Grace:
Rediscovering
the
Evangelical
Gospel,
Philip
Graham
Ryken
&
James
Montgomery
Boice
6. Evangelism
and
Missions:
The
gospel
is
to
be
preached
to
all
nations
(Matthew
28:19-‐20).
“God
…
commands
all
men
everywhere
to
repent”(Acts
17:30).
Jesus
Christ
is
both
Lord
(Acts
2:21,
“That
whoever
calls
on
the
name
of
the
LORD
shall
be
saved.”)
and
Savior
(Acts
5:31,
“God
has
exalted
to
His
right
hand
to
be
Prince
and
Savior”).
The
gospel
is
that
“He
who
believes
in
the
Son
has
everlasting
life;
and
he
who
does
not
believe
the
Son
shall
not
see
life,
but
the
wrath
of
God
abides
on
him.”
(John
3:36).
