~Chapter 19~
The word Trinity does not appear in the Bible, so where did
it come from? I want to search the scriptures and find out which ones
support the doctrine and which ones go against it. One of the things
that Trinity supporters often say is that the reason no one can
understand the Trinity is because God’s mind is above our
understanding. That is fine if God tells me through His word,
“Believe in the Trinity even though it is beyond your understanding.”
However, does God say this in the Bible or did man make it up?
Let’s say that someone told you that demons were the good guys and
also told you to just believe them because it is above your
understanding. Would you believe it at face value, or search out the
scriptures to find the truth? I want to search out the scriptures. There
are many different variations to the Trinity doctrine, but I want to
outline one of the most accepted ones. I know some of you are
saying in your mind right now; what about John chapter one? In the
beginning was the Word. Don’t worry, we will look at all the
passages that support and go against this doctrine.
The doctrine of the Trinity means that there is one God who eternally
exists as three distinct Persons--the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
Stated differently, God is one in essence and three in person. These
definitions express three crucial truths: 1) The Father, Son, and Holy
Spirit are distinct Persons, 2) each Person is fully God, 3) there is
only one God. While the three members of the Trinity are distinct,
this does not mean that any is inferior to the other. Instead, they are
2 Faith-What I Believe and Why I Believe It
all identical in attributes. They are equal in power, love, mercy,
justice, holiness, knowledge, and all other qualities. Having seen that
the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are distinct Persons, that they
are each fully God, and that there is nonetheless only one God, we
must conclude that all three Persons are the same God. In other
words, there is one God who exists as three distinct Persons. How is
God one? He is one in essence. How is God three? He is three in
Person. Essence and person are not the same thing. God is one in a
certain way (essence) and three in a different way (person). Since
God is one in a different way than He is three, the Trinity is not a
contradiction. There would only be a contradiction if we said that
God is three in the same way that He is one.
Mark 12:28 One of the scribes came and heard them arguing, and
recognizing that He had answered them well, asked Him, “What
commandment is the foremost of all?” 29 Jesus answered, “The
foremost is, ‘HEAR, O ISRAEL! THE LORD OUR GOD IS ONE
LORD; 30 AND YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH
ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH
ALL YOUR MIND, AND WITH ALL YOUR STRENGTH.’ 31 The
second is this, ‘YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS
YOURSELF.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.
It can be easy to miss, but Jesus states here that one of the most
important commandments is to know that “the Lord our God is one
Lord.” I write this article under the fear of the Lord and with this
verse (and others), it is easy to understand how the Trinity doctrine
came about; but does this verse mean that the three are one?
Jeremiah 3:19 "But I said, 'How I would put you among the children,
and give you a pleasant land, a goodly heritage of the armies of the
nations!' and I said, 'You shall call me "My Father," and shall not
turn away from following me.' 20"Surely as a wife treacherously
departs from her husband, so you have dealt treacherously with me,
house of Israel," says Yahweh. WEB
Jeremiah 31:9 They shall come with weeping; and with petitions will
I lead them: I will cause them to walk by rivers of waters, in a
straight way in which they shall not stumble; for I am a father to
Israel, and Ephraim is my firstborn. 10 Hear the word of Yahweh,

scattered Israel will gather him, and keep him, as shepherd does his

Isaiah 9:6 For to us a child is born. To us a son is given; and the
government will be on his shoulders. His name will be called
Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of
Peace. 7 Of the increase of his government and of peace there shall
be no end, on the throne of David, and on his kingdom, to establish
it, and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from that time
on, even forever. The zeal of Yahweh of Armies will perform this.

Isaiah 45:5 I am Yahweh, and there is none else. Besides me, there

Proverbs 30:4 Who has ascended into heaven and descended? Who
has gathered the wind in His fists? Who has wrapped the waters in
His garment? Who has established all the ends of the earth? What is
His name or His son’s name? Surely you know! 5 Every word of
God is tested; He is a shield to those who take refuge in Him. 6 Do
not add to His words Or He will reprove you, and you will be proved
a liar. [emphasis mine]
Psalms 2:2 The kings of the earth take a stand, and the rulers take
counsel together, against Yahweh, and against his Anointed, saying,
WEB [emphasis mine]
Here David also separates Yahweh from the Lord (Jesus). In the
New Testament, this verse simply reads; the Lord says to my Lord.
However when we read it in the Old Testament and examine the
Hebrew words, David is actually saying; Yahweh says to my Lord.
He not only teaches us their separate names, but He states that the
Father (Yahweh) will be sitting in the middle, with Jesus (Lord) at
His right hand.
6 Faith-What I Believe and Why I Believe It
Isaiah 11:1 A shoot will come out of the stock of Jesse, and a branch
out of his roots will bear fruit. 2 The Spirit of Yahweh will rest on
him: the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel
and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of Yahweh. 3a His
delight will be in the fear of Yahweh. WEB [emphasis mine]
Will Jesus delight in the fear of His Father, or the fear of Himself? In
my opinion, I believe Yahweh is referring to the Father in this
passage.
This next passage some people take to mean that Yahweh and Jesus
are the same person.
Jeremiah 23:5 “Behold, the days are coming,” declares the LORD,
“When I will raise up for David a righteous Branch; And He will
reign as king and act wisely And do justice and righteousness in the
land. 6 "In His days Judah will be saved, And Israel will dwell
securely; And this is His name by which He will be called, 'The
LORD our righteousness.'
The word Lord in verse six is the Hebrew word Yahweh. But let’s
look at Young’s Literal translation of the verse to see what it really
means.
Young states that the proper translation in his opinion is that the
Father (Jehovah) proclaims Him “Our Righteousness.”
Is the Doctrine of the Trinity Biblical? 7
Here is another verse this time calling Judah and Jerusalem “The
LORD our righteousness” again using the Hebrew word Yahweh.
Does the New Testament Confirm That There is One God While
Separating Him From Jesus?
John 17:3 This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only
true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent. [emphasis mine]
Jesus said this with His own mouth that Yahweh is the only true
God, and He is obviously God’s Son whom He sent. Don’t be
concerned, I believe Jesus is my Lord and Savior and I worship Him,
but we will get to that later. Here are a few more scriptures on this
topic.
Mark 5:6 Seeing Jesus from a distance, he ran up and bowed down
before Him; 7 and shouting with a loud voice, he said, “What
business do we have with each other, Jesus, Son of the Most High
God? I implore You by God, do not torment me!”
If the demoniac refers to Jesus as the Son of the Most High God,
would it not lead us to believe that God is of higher authority than
Jesus?
Mark 10:18 And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No
one is good except God alone.
John 5:43 I have come in My Father’s name, and you do not receive
Me; if another comes in his own name, you will receive him. 44 How
can you believe, when you receive glory from one another and you
do not seek the glory that is from the one and only God? 45 Do not
think that I will accuse you before the Father; the one who accuses
you is Moses, in whom you have set your hope. [emphasis mine]
8 Faith-What I Believe and Why I Believe It
In verse 43 Jesus is separating Himself from the Father and in verse
44 He calls the Father the one and only God. He is stating that the
Father is the one and only true God.
John 14:1 “Do not let your heart be troubled; believe in God,
believe also in Me.
Ephesians 4:4 There is one body and one Spirit, just as also you
were called in one hope of your calling; 5 one Lord, one faith, one
baptism, 6 one God and Father of all who is over all and through all
and in all.
Paul restates to the people of Ephesus what he had told the people of
Corinth. There is one Lord and one God and Father. He not only
makes a distinction between them, but he declares that the Father is
over all (which includes being over the Son).
1 Timothy 2:5 For there is one God, and one mediator also between
God and men, the man Christ Jesus,
Paul also tells Timothy that there is only one God, just like the Old
Testament states. He continues on saying that there is also one
mediator between God and men (Jesus).
Is the Doctrine of the Trinity Biblical? 9
Jude 1:25 to the only God our Savior, through Jesus Christ our
Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion and authority, before all time and
now and forever. Amen.
Jude also affirms there being one true God and His salvation coming
to us through His son.
Now look back at the drawing of the Trinity at the beginning of this
chapter. God in the middle of the picture should really be labeled
Yahweh and not the vague word God. And that changes the whole
drawing. It no longer makes sense if Yahweh is the one true God and
Jesus is His Son. You would have to remove one corner from the
drawing because Yahweh IS the Father. But the drawing is not in
scripture, so we don’t have to believe it is absolute truth if it goes
against the Bible. You are probably running scriptures through your
mind right now, like what about all the scriptures in the gospel of
John like “the Word was God” and “I am one with the Father.” We
will address those passages a little later on.
John 14:28 You heard that I said to you, ‘I go away, and I will come
to you.’ If you loved Me, you would have rejoiced because I go to the
Father, for the Father is greater than I.
Jesus tells us with His own words that the Father is greater than Him.
I believe this verse is meant to be taken at face value.
10 Faith-What I Believe and Why I Believe It
1 Corinthians 3:22 whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas or the world
or life or death or things present or things to come; all things belong
to you, 23 and you belong to Christ; and Christ belongs to God.
1 Corinthians 15:24 then comes the end, when He hands over the
kingdom to the God and Father, when He has abolished all rule and
all authority and power. 25 For He must reign until He has put all
His enemies under His feet. 26 The last enemy that will be abolished
is death. 27 For HE HAS PUT ALL THINGS IN SUBJECTION
UNDER HIS FEET. But when He says, “All things are put in
subjection,” it is evident that He is excepted who put all things in
subjection to Him. 28 When all things are subjected to Him, then the
Son Himself also will be subjected to the One who subjected all
things to Him, so that God may be all in all.
Look at the phrasing in verses 27 and 28. It is evident that Paul does
not believe the Father and the Son are equals. In verse 27 Paul is
saying that all things will be put in subjection to Christ, but that this
excludes God the Father. For at the end of all things the Son will be
subjected to the Father. If God was of higher authority than Christ
only during Christ’s time on earth, then why at the end of all
things is Christ in subjection to God?

Matthew 27:46 About the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud
voice, saying, “ELI, ELI, LAMA SABACHTHANI?” that is,“MY
GOD, MY GOD, WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME?”
John 20:17 Jesus said to her, “Stop clinging to Me, for I have not yet
ascended to the Father; but go to My brethren and say to them, ‘I
ascend to My Father and your Father, and My God and your God.’”
Romans 15:6 so that with one accord you may with one voice glorify
the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
2 Corinthians 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus
Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort,
2 Corinthians 11:31 The God and Father of the Lord Jesus, He who
is blessed forever, knows that I am not lying.
Ephesians 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus
Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the
heavenly places in Christ,
Ephesians 1:17 that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of
glory, may give to you a spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the
knowledge of Him.
1 Peter 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
who according to His great mercy has caused us to be born again to
a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead
Revelation 3:2 Wake up, and strengthen the things that remain,

which were about to die; for I have not found your deeds completed
in the sight of My God. ... 12 He who overcomes, I will make him a
pillar in the temple of My God, and he will not go out from it
anymore; and I will write on him the name of My God, and the
name of the city of My God, the new Jerusalem, which comes down
out of heaven from My God, and My new name. 13 He who has an
ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.’ [emphasis
mine]
Five times in Revelation chapter three alone, Jesus calls God His
God. It doesn’t get a whole lot more clear than that. Five
confirmations in one chapter is quite a corroboration of this subject.
Did Jesus always have the same authority that was given to Him by
the Father? No. Otherwise how could He receive authority if He
always had it?
John 17:2 even as You gave Him authority over all flesh, that to all
whom You have given Him, He may give eternal life.
John 17:24 Father, I desire that they also, whom You have given Me,
be with Me where I am, so that they may see My glory which You
have given Me, for You loved Me before the foundation of the world.
If the Father gave Jesus a certain amount of glory, that would infer
that there was also a time when He had less glory.
Acts 2:36 Therefore let all the house of Israel know for certain that
God has made Him both Lord and Christ—this Jesus whom you
crucified.”
God made Jesus both Lord and Christ over Israel. How did He make
14 Faith-What I Believe and Why I Believe It
Him Lord and Christ over them if He always was?
Acts 3:20 and that He may send Jesus, the Christ appointed for you,
Christ was appointed for us. Appoint means to select someone to fill
an office or position. If Christ was chosen to be our savior, there
must have been a moment in time before He was selected.
Paul doesn’t say that all things were always in subjection to Christ.
He says in verse 28, “when all things are subjected to Him.”
Hebrews 1:2 in these last days has spoken to us in His Son, whom He
appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the world.
Just because God made the entire world through Christ as this verse
states, there was still a time when He appointed Him heir of all
things. It would also follow then that there was a time when He was
not appointed yet.
Hebrews 2:10 For it was fitting for Him, for whom are all things,
and through whom are all things, in bringing many sons to glory, to
perfect the author of their salvation through sufferings.
Jesus was perfected by the Father following His death on the cross,
so that also leads me to believe that although He was glorious, He
was not perfected prior to the cross.

Hebrews 4:14 Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has
passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast
our confession. 15 For we do not have a high priest who cannot
sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in
all things as we are, yet without sin.
Hebrews 7:23 The former priests, on the one hand, existed in greater
numbers because they were prevented by death from continuing, 24
but Jesus, on the other hand, because He continues forever, holds
His priesthood permanently. 25 Therefore He is able also to save
forever those who draw near to God through Him, since He always
lives to make intercession for them. 26 For it was fitting for us to
have such a high priest, holy, innocent, undefiled, separated from
sinners and exalted above the heavens; 27 who does not need daily,
like those high priests, to offer up sacrifices, first for His own sins
and then for the sins of the people, because this He did once for all
when He offered up Himself. 28 For the Law appoints men as high
priests who are weak, but the word of the oath, which came after the
Law, appoints a Son, made perfect forever.

The Old Testament and the New Testament Merge in Harmony
The Roman Emperor Constantine the First had a very big role to play
in popularizing the Trinity Doctrine. He also legalized Christianity in
the year 313 with the Edict of Milan. Constantine actually
worshipped other gods (namely the sun god “Sol”), but is said to
Is the Doctrine of the Trinity Biblical? 17
have accepted the Lord and requested to be baptized when he knew
that he was dying. Eusebius of Nicomedia baptized him in the Jordan
River in the year 337. He promised to live more of a Christian life if
he lived through his illness, but died shortly after. In the year 325
Constantine held the first major church council where they decided
many of the doctrines/creeds that we still hold to today. It was called
the Council of Nicaea. Constantine and Arius had a major
disagreement at this council. Constantine believed that Yahweh and
Jesus were the same being, and Arius believed they were two
completely separate beings. The argument got so heated that one of
the other saints slapped Arius in the face. Arius’s doctrines were
condemned as heresy in the proceedings, and Arius was forcefully
removed from office along with two of his supporters. Following this
dispute Arius was forced to leave his native land. He took refuge in
Palestine. This is known in history as the Arian Controversy. The
doctrine was called Arianism. Even today, when a discussion about
the validity of the Trinity doctrine comes up, the Arian heresy is
brought forth into the discussion in order to add support to the
Trinity. Many were fearful to oppose Constantine’s beliefs after that.
In the Council of Nicaea the Father and the Son were declared to be
the same being, but the Holy Spirit was not included until later. They
did however begin to lay a lot of the groundwork for the doctrine of
the Trinity at this council. As I stated earlier, Constantine died in
337. Arianism had some resurgence after his death, but never
overtook what was decided at Nicaea. In 363, the Council of
Laodicea played a big role in deciding the New Testament canon,
although it did not include the book of Revelation. In 381 the
Council of Constantinople was held and one of the main topics of
discussion was the doctrine of the Trinity. They decided that the
Holy Spirit, the Father, and Jesus were all one and this was the first
universal adoption of the Trinity. Following 381, the majority of the
church has held to the Doctrine of the Trinity. One thing to note both
with the councils of Nicaea and Constantinople is that there was
opposition on both sides of the arguments. The question this places
is; should we accept every belief as truth that was decided in these
early councils, or should we examine the scriptures to see if they
agree? What if they made some mistakes at these early councils? I
don’t want to disagree with them for the sake of disagreeing.
However, I do ask for the freedom to search out the Bible for myself,
without using all of their doctrines as the “lens” or starting point
from which I view scripture.
18 Faith-What I Believe and Why I Believe It
Section 7) Did Modifications to Our Bibles Help to
Solidify the Trinity Doctrine?
In my opinion, the doctrine of the Trinity is the only entire doctrine
that was “added” to our Bibles. How was it added; you may ask?
Constantine and the early Roman church (and possibly others) were
fairly intelligent about this addition. At the Council of Nicaea in 325,
the wheels started turning on the inception of the doctrine of the
Trinity. It was officially decided at this council that God and Jesus
were the same being/essence. This council is also where the
argument arose with Arius and the Arain Heresy was formed by
Constantine. A lot of people have not carefully thought about the
fact that our oldest complete Greek New Testament manuscripts are
from 325 or later (around the same time as this council). I strongly
believe (although I do not have proof) that the specific reason for this
is because Constantine and the early Roman church had all the older
manuscripts destroyed. In my belief, their reason in doing this was to
cover their tracks. It is important to mention that they changed
the Greek manuscripts specifically, and not the English
translations of them. Many people do not understand the
importance of finding the most accurate Greek texts. Their biggest
mistake in concealing their editions was that the Roman church
continued to modify the Greek texts hundreds of years later. A few
of the editions were so blatant and obvious that almost none of
today’s scholars support them. I do want to state here that there
weren’t to my knowledge, hundreds of editions, but I believe quite
possibly dozens. However, the Bibles that utilize the older Greek
texts like the NASB have a lot less additions than the Bibles that use
the newer Greek texts like the KJV. I want to look at several of the
most important additions that helped to solidify the doctrine of the
Trinity. One thing that we need to clarify before we get started is that
the NASB and most modern Bibles utilize the older Greek New
Testament manuscripts. Their starting point is the Nestle Aland
Greek text which uses the older Alexandrian manuscripts. The King
James Version and the New King James Version utilize a much more
modern Greek New Testament manuscript. Their starting point is the
Textus Receptus which uses the Byzantine or Majority manuscripts
that aren’t nearly as old. They are over 500 years newer than the
most of the Alexandrian manuscripts. I don’t think the King James
Version is a bad translation of the Bible, but I believe that it uses a
much newer Greek manuscript which contains several editions.
Matthew 28:19 having gone, then, disciple all the nations, [baptizing
them -- to the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy
Spirit,] YLT
When Origen and Eusebius quote the Matthew 28:19 text in their
ancient writings the triune baptism is omitted. However, Eusebius
went to the Council of Nicaea, and following this council he quotes
this verse with the triune baptism in the writings of his later years.
The people who made these additions didn’t cover their tracks very
well.
One of the most famous additions to the Bible of all time is the
addition to 1 John 5:7-8. Erasmus added this to the third edition of
his Greek text, as it was not in his first two additions. It made it into
every version of the Textus Receptus, so the KJV/NKJV include it.
Most current Bibles which use the older Nestle Aland text exclude it.
Almost no scholars today support this verse in any way. It is so well
talked about it has a name; the Comma Johanneum.
1 John 5:7 For there are three that bear record in heaven, the
Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one. 8
And there are three that bear witness in earth, the Spirit, and the
water, and the blood: and these three agree in one. KJV
1 John 5:7 For there are three that testify: 8 the Spirit and the water
and the blood; and the three are in agreement.
20 Faith-What I Believe and Why I Believe It
If this verse was an original, it would help to solidify the Trinity
doctrine. The fact that this is a blatant addition makes me wonder
what the motives were for adding it.
John 1:18 No one has ever seen God, but God the One and Only,
who is at the Father’s side, has made him known. KJV
John 1:18 No one has seen God at any time; the only begotten God
who is in the bosom of the Father, He has explained Him.
If I read this verse out of a KJV Bible, I would state Jesus is God the
One and Only and He is the same being/essence of the Father. If I
read this verse out of a NASB Bible, I would state that Jesus Christ is
the only begotten God. Since the Father is not begotten, I would
deem them as separate.
John 3:13 And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came
down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven. KJV
John 3:13 No one has ascended into heaven, but He who descended
from heaven: the Son of Man.
The KJV version of this verse seems to read that Jesus was literally
on the earth and in heaven simultaneously. This would work into the
doctrine of the Trinity, because it teaches that He is the same essence
as the Father. The NASB version reads completely differently. It
simply says that Jesus descended from heaven.
Is the Doctrine of the Trinity Biblical? 21
Philippians 2:6 who, although He existed in the form of God, did not
regard equality with God a thing to be grasped,
The KJV text says that Jesus thought it was okay for Him to be
considered equal to God. The NASB text says that Jesus did not
think equality with God was something for Him to grasp. They say
completely opposite things. In Philippians 2:6 the Greek text behind
the KJV and NASB vary slightly, but it is more of a translation
dispute than a Greek Text dispute.
Romans 9:5 of whom are the fathers and from whom, according to
the flesh, Christ came, who is over all, the eternally blessed God.
Amen. NKJV
Romans 9:5 whose are the fathers, and from whom is the Christ
according to the flesh, who is over all, God blessed forever. Amen.
Romans 9:5 Whose are the fathers, and of whom as concerning the
flesh Christ came, who is over all, God blessed for ever. Amen. KJV
This last verse is purely a translation dispute. The NKJV says that
Christ is the eternally blessed God, and the NASB and KJV say that
Christ is blessed by God forever. I believe that the latter two line up
with the rest of the Bible.
The NKJV version in verses 1 John 5:7-8, 1 Tim 3:16, and John 3:13
adds footnotes which will say NU Text reads differently and will
give the alternate readings. NU text stands for Nestle Aland/United
Bible Societies Greek Texts.
Acts 17:29 Being then the children of God, we ought not to think that
the Divine Nature is like gold or silver or stone, an image formed by
the art and thought of man.
Romans 1:20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the
world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are
made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without
excuse: KJV
Romans 1:20 For since the creation of the world His invisible
attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly
seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are
without excuse.
Colossians 2:9 For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead
bodily. KJV
Colossians 2:9 For in Him all the fullness of Deity dwells in bodily
form,
John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with
God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God.
They are both called Lord here, but they are also listed as being
separate. The same Greek word is used for Lord in both instances.
The word Yahweh (it is Hebrew) isn’t used in the New Testament,
24 Faith-What I Believe and Why I Believe It
but in the Old Testament book of Psalms it reads:
Theos is the Greek word that is translated as God the majority of the
time in the New Testament. It is used over 1300 times. It can refer to
Yahweh, Yeshua, the Holy Spirit, believers, or false Gods. In 1
Corinthians 4:4 when it talks about Satan as the god of this world, it
uses the word Theos as well. We can tell by the sentence what kind
of god is talked about. In John 10:34 Jesus refers to us as gods (with
a little g), but the word again is Theos. So even though Satan is
called the theos of this world and believers are called theos, it is
obvious from the context that we are not on the same playing field as
God Himself. Theos is a basic name for God and also for gods and
goddesses. Since it has so many uses, we need to be careful to
understand its context. Let’s look at another verse in Hebrews on this
subject.
The word used for God all three times in this passage is Theos.
Yahweh calls Yeshua God, but just following this, He also says He is
Yeshua’s God. I take this verse in Hebrews to mean that the Father is
of higher authority than the Son and also that they are completely
separate individuals.
In John 1:1-2, it states twice that the Word was with God, again
differentiating them. They are both Theos, but that doesn’t make
them the same being/essence. This is my personal interpretation of
the verse; I am not saying that the Greek says this. In the beginning
was Yeshua, and Yeshua was with Yahweh, and Yeshua was God.
Yeshua was in the beginning with Yahweh.
A little side subject on John 1:1 is that if you look it up in the Greek,
every time it uses the word God in this verse it has a definite article.
This denotes the one true God, except when it says “the Word was
Is the Doctrine of the Trinity Biblical? 25
God.” In this case it is missing the definite article in the Greek
differentiating between the two. Here is a quote by Greek scholar
Corey Keating. He is a Trinity supporter, but talks about the definite
article in John 1:1, as part of his support that “the Father is not the
Son.” Here is his quote. “However, since it does not have the definite
article, it does indicate that this Word was not the same ‘person’ as
the Father God, but has the same ‘essence’ and ‘nature’.” I don’t
agree with the end of his statement, but I do support the beginning of
it.
Let’s also look a little further in John chapter one to see if scripture
is trying to say they are the same being/essence.
John 1:14 And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we
saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of
grace and truth
John 1:29 The next day he saw Jesus coming to him and said,
“Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!
John 1:34 I myself have seen, and have testified that this is the Son of
God.”
John 1:49 Nathanael answered Him, “Rabbi, You are the Son of
God; You are the King of Israel.
John 1:51 And He said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you will
see the heavens opened and the angels of God ascending and
descending on the Son of Man.”
John refers to Jesus in these passages as the Lamb of God and the
Son of God. He doesn’t state that they are the same being. The verse
I really want to delve into though is John 1:18.
John 1:18 No one has seen God at any time; the only begotten God
who is in the bosom of the Father, He has explained Him.
Did you know that in the same chapter of John, he says that God and
the only begotten God are different people? The Greek word Theos
is used in both instances. If you look at this verse in the NKJV, it
says the only begotten Son, but if you check the NKJV footnotes, it
26 Faith-What I Believe and Why I Believe It
will tell you that NU Text (Nestle Aland/United Bible Societies)
reads “only begotten God.” So in both John 1:1 and John 1:18 the
word Theos is used to refer to both the Father and the Son, while still
maintaining that they are separate individuals. Here is my personal
interpretation of John 1:18. I am not saying that this is what the
Greek or English originally says, but it helps me to put this text in
perspective. No one has seen Yahweh at any time, the only begotten
Yeshua who is in the bosom of Yahweh, He has explained Him.
If we read only this verse, I can see where people would think they
are the same being, but do the verses following clarify?
John 10:33 The Jews answered Him, “For a good work we do not
stone You, but for blasphemy; and because You, being a man, make
Yourself out to be God.” 34 Jesus answered them, “Has it not been
written in your Law, ‘I SAID, YOU ARE GODS’? 35 If he called
them gods, to whom the word of God came (and the Scripture cannot
be broken), 36 do you say of Him, whom the Father sanctified and
sent into the world, ‘You are blaspheming,’ because I said, ‘I am the
Son of God’? 37 If I do not do the works of My Father, do not believe
Me; 38 but if I do them, though you do not believe Me, believe the
works, so that you may know and understand that the Father is in
Me, and I in the Father.”
The Jews said He was making Himself out to be God; but did Jesus
affirm it? He started out talking about how we are all called gods
(little g) in the Old Testament, and in verse 36 He says, do you say I
am blaspheming, because I said I am the Son of God? So He started
off stating that I and the Father are one, and clarified what He meant
six verses later, saying I am the Son of God. He also says the Father
is in Me, and I in the Father. Does this mean they are the same
being? Does Jesus also say this of His bride?
John 14:20 In that day you will know that I am in My Father, and
you in Me, and I in you.
Also see John 15:4-6, John 17:22-26, Acts 17:28, 1 Corinthians 6:15-

Were the Jewish people under the impression following this
conversation that Jesus and God were one; or were they of the
thought that Jesus was merely stating that He was God’s Son?
John 19:7 The Jews answered him, “We have a law, and by that law
He ought to die because He made Himself out to be the Son of God.”
Judging by John chapter 19, I believe that the Jews were under the
impression that Jesus was simply stating that He was God’s Son.
John 14:7 If you had known Me, you would have known My Father
also; from now on you know Him, and have seen Him.”8 Philip said
to Him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.” 9 Jesus
said to him, “Have I been so long with you, and yet you have not
come to know Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father;
how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Do you not believe that I
am in the Father, and the Father is in Me? The words that I say to
you I do not speak on My own initiative, but the Father abiding in
Me does His works. 11 Believe Me that I am in the Father and the
Father is in Me; otherwise believe because of the works themselves.
Jesus states that he who has seen Me has seen the Father. He clarifies
what He meant one verse later. In verses 10 and 11 He says that I am
in the Father and the Father is in Me. The fact that He is in the Father
and the Father is in Him does not make them the same being.
Does Jesus say other things in the gospel of John that the disciples
don’t understand until He clarifies?
John 11:11b “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep; but I go, so that
I may awaken him out of sleep.” 12 The disciples then said to Him,
“Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover.” 13 Now Jesus had
spoken of his death, but they thought that He was speaking of literal
sleep. 14 So Jesus then said to them plainly, “Lazarus is dead.
If we would only read John 11:11 we would think that Lazarus was
sleeping. Jesus clarifies a few verses later and says plainly that
Lazarus is dead. We need to read all of these passages in context and
not just focus on the individual verses.
John 17:3 This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true
God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent. 4 I glorified You on the
earth, having accomplished the work which You have given Me to
do. 5 Now, Father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory
which I had with You before the world was.
John 17:11 I am no longer in the world; and yet they themselves are
in the world, and I come to You. Holy Father, keep them in Your
name, the name which You have given Me, that they may be one even
as We are.
Jesus tells us here that believers will be one with each other, just as
He is one with the Father. We are not the same being/essence as
other believers, but we are one in unity with them.
John 17:21 that they may all be one; even as You, Father, are in Me
and I in You, that they also may be in Us, so that the world may
believe that You sent Me. 22 The glory which You have given Me I
have given to them, that they may be one, just as We are one; 23 I in
them and You in Me, that they may be perfected in unity, so that the
world may know that You sent Me, and loved them, even as You have
loved Me.
Jesus is again saying that we as believers will be one with each other
as God and Jesus are one. That is how they are one, in unity. No
one would say for example that since John and Jeremiah are both
Is the Doctrine of the Trinity Biblical? 29
believers that they are the same being, but as believers they are one
in unity. God and Jesus are one in unity but not the same being
either.
Genesis 1:26a Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image,
according to Our likeness;
John 1:3 All things came into being through Him, and apart from
Him nothing came into being that has come into being. [emphasis
mine]
Colossians 1:16 For by Him all things were created, both in the
heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or
dominions or rulers or authorities—all things have been created
through Him and for Him. [emphasis mine]
We can see that Jesus was there in the beginning and that all things
were created through Him. I believe that when it says created
30 Faith-What I Believe and Why I Believe It
through Him and for Him, it is referencing that He had help from
God the Father. I will elaborate on this a little later. So do any
scriptures say that Yahweh created Yeshua? I need to provide a little
understanding of wisdom first.
Luke 7:34 The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you
say, ‘Behold, a gluttonous man and a drunkard, a friend of tax
collectors and sinners!’ 35 Yet wisdom is vindicated by all her
children.”
Matthew 11:19 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they
say, ‘Behold, a gluttonous man and a drunkard, a friend of tax
collectors and sinners!’ Yet wisdom is vindicated by her deeds.”
The text in Matthew doesn’t actually say her either (if you look at the
Greek), but the since the word wisdom is a feminine noun, the
translators decided to render it as “her.” If the translators believed it
was specifically talking about Jesus, it could be translated His.
Proverbs 8:1 Does not wisdom call, And understanding lift up her
voice? 2 On top of the heights beside the way, Where the paths meet,
she takes her stand; 3 Beside the gates, at the opening to the city, At
the entrance of the doors, she cries out: 4 “To you, O men, I call,
And my voice is to the sons of men. 5 “O naive ones, understand
prudence; And, O fools, understand wisdom. 6 “Listen, for I will
speak noble things; And the opening of my lips will reveal right
Is the Doctrine of the Trinity Biblical? 31
things. 7 “For my mouth will utter truth; And wickedness is an
abomination to my lips. 8 “All the utterances of my mouth are in
righteousness; There is nothing crooked or perverted in them. 9
“They are all straightforward to him who understands, And right to
those who find knowledge. 10 “Take my instruction and not silver,
And knowledge rather than choicest gold. 11 “For wisdom is better
than jewels; And all desirable things cannot compare with her.
[emphasis mine]
In each case here where it says her or she, the Greek doesn’t actually
say her, but the gender of the noun decides it. The translators state
that this is wisdom personified, and so they translate it she. However,
if they believed that it was talking about Jesus they could translate it
He. Let’s read on; this is a crucial passage.
Proverbs 8:22 “The LORD brought me forth as the first of his works,
before his deeds of old; 23 I was appointed from eternity, from the
beginning, before the world began. 24 When there were no oceans, I
was given birth, when there were no springs abounding with water;
25 before the mountains were settled in place, before the hills, I was
given birth, 26 before he made the earth or its fields or any of the
dust of the world. NIV
I believe this passage is stating that the Father gave birth to Jesus
before anything else was created.
I also want to check out a few portions of this using the WEB which
inserts Yahweh for H3068.
Proverbs 8:35 For whoever finds me, finds life, and will obtain favor
from Yahweh. WEB [emphasis mine]
Here are a few other Old Testament scriptures saying that God
created the world through wisdom.
Psalms 104:24 O LORD, how many are Your works! In wisdom You
have made them all; The earth is full of Your possessions. 25 There
is the sea, great and broad, In which are swarms without number,
Animals both small and great.
Psalms 136:5 To Him who by wisdom made the heavens, For His
mercy endures forever; 6 To Him who laid out the earth above the
waters, For His mercy endures forever; NKJV
Luke 11:49 For this reason also the wisdom of God said, ‘I will send
to them prophets and apostles, and some of them they will kill and
some they will persecute,
Paul starts out in verse four saying that He is giving insight into the
mystery of Christ. In verse nine he says that a mystery has been
hidden for the ages. He continues on stating that the wisdom of God
is being made known, and it is in accordance with the eternal
purpose of Christ.
Paul reiterates here that God’s mystery is Christ, and in Christ are all
treasures of wisdom and knowledge.
1 Corinthians 1:22 For indeed Jews ask for signs and Greeks search
for wisdom; 23 but we preach Christ crucified, to Jews a stumbling
block and to Gentiles foolishness, 24 but to those who are the called,
both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of
God.
I believe that Jesus was the firstborn of all that God created. He of
course wasn’t the first person born on the earth. Some people state
that this verse pertains to Jesus being the first to receive His glorified
body. I believe however that He was considered as being born before
His resurrection.
Paul states here that Christ is the firstborn over all creation. He is not
talking about Jesus being born on the earth after many things had
been created; he is talking about before anything else was created.
Jesus created all things, but that of course does not include Himself.
The Father created Him and that is why He is God’s Son.
Hebrews 1:5 For to which of the angels did God ever say, “You are
my Son; today I have become your Father”? Or again, “I will be his
Father, and he will be my Son”? 6 And again, when God brings his
firstborn into the world, he says, “Let all God’s angels worship
him.” [emphasis mine]
The author of Hebrews states that God brought His firstborn into the
world. This passage implies that He was already His firstborn before
He brought Him into the world.
Hebrews 12:22 But you have come to Mount Zion, to the heavenly
Jerusalem, the city of the living God. You have come to thousands
36 Faith-What I Believe and Why I Believe It
upon thousands of angels in joyful assembly, 23 to the church of the
firstborn, whose names are written in heaven. You have come to
God, the judge of all men, to the spirits of righteous men made
perfect, 24 to Jesus the mediator of a new covenant, and to the
sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel.
[emphasis mine]
Revelation 3:14 “To the angel of the church in Laodicea write: The
Amen, the faithful and true Witness, the Beginning of the creation of
God, says this: [emphasis mine]
Jesus Christ was the beginning of the creation of God. It doesn’t get
much simpler than this.
There are also several scriptures stating that Jesus has come
forth from the Father and was also sent into the world.
John 7:29 I know Him, because I am from Him, and He sent Me.”
John 8:42 Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would
love Me, for I proceeded forth and have come from God, for I have
not even come on My own initiative, but He sent Me.
John 16:27 for the Father Himself loves you, because you have loved
Me and have believed that I came forth from the Father. 28 I came
forth from the Father and have come into the world; I am leaving the
world again and going to the Father.”
John 17:8 for the words which You gave Me I have given to them;
and they received them and truly understood that I came forth from
You, and they believed that You sent Me.
John 18:37 Therefore Pilate said to Him, “So You are a king?”
Jesus answered, “You say correctly that I am a king. For this I have
been born, and for this I have come into the world, to testify to the
Is the Doctrine of the Trinity Biblical? 37
truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice.” [emphasis
mine]
I believe that although we often read right over verses like these
listed above, Jesus is stating that He came forth (was created by) God
and later on the Father sent Him to the earth.
John 6:57 As the living Father sent Me, and I live because of the
Father, so he who eats Me, he also will live because of Me.
[emphasis mine]
Romans 8:16 The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are
children of God, 17 and if children, heirs also, heirs of God and
fellow heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him so that we may
also be glorified with Him.
Hebrews 2:11 For both He who sanctifies and those who are
sanctified are all from one Father; for which reason He is not
ashamed to call them brethren,
I believe that God created Christ before anything else, before time
began, as the only “begotten God” (John 1:18 NASB). Then God
created the world, heaven, and the angels through Christ. So even
though we are sons of God, God created us through Christ, therefore
we are not only God’s Son, we are Christ’s creation also. But Christ
is God’s only begotten Son, because He is the only one who God
38 Faith-What I Believe and Why I Believe It
created alone. Jesus is called at times Son of Man and also Son of
God. I believe it is because God created Him in the beginning, and
many years later, the Holy Spirit came upon Mary and He was born
of man. Can you imagine how many scriptures we may have glossed
over? What if every time in the Bible where it says Son of God it is
referring to God creating Him and every time it says Son of Man it is
talking about the Holy Spirit coming upon Mary and Jesus being
born on the earth? Look at this next verse in this light.
1 Corinthians 8:6 yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from
whom are all things and we exist for Him; and one Lord, Jesus
Christ, by whom are all things, and we exist through Him. [emphasis
mine]
1 Corinthians 8:6 yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from
whom all things came and for whom we live; and there is but one
Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things came and through
whom we live. NIV [emphasis mine]
It says that all things are from God and all things are made by or
through (depending on the translation) Christ. So God made
everything through Christ, except of course Christ himself, who is
His only Son.
The dictionary says -1: the rank or essential nature of a god: divinity,
supreme being 2: a god or goddess (the deities of ancient Greece) 3:
one exalted or revered as supremely good or powerful.
The Father is the one on the throne and Jesus is the Lamb. The elders
worshipped them both.
Daniel 7:13 “In my vision at night I looked, and there before me was
one like a son of man, coming with the clouds of heaven. He
approached the Ancient of Days and was led into his presence. 14
He was given authority, glory and sovereign power; all peoples,
nations and men of every language worshiped him. His dominion is
an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom is
one that will never be destroyed. NIV
Daniel says that Yahweh gave Yeshua authority and glory, and all
people worshipped Him. In light of this, I have no worries about
worshipping them both.
Revelation 6:16 and they said to the mountains and to the rocks,
“Fall on us and hide us from the presence of Him who sits on the
throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb; 17 for the great day of their
wrath has come, and who is able to stand?”
The Father and the Son will judge the world as separate individuals.
40 Faith-What I Believe and Why I Believe It
Revelation 7:10 and they cry out with a loud voice, saying,
“Salvation to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb.”
Revelation 11:15 Then the seventh angel sounded; and there were
loud voices in heaven, saying, “The kingdom of the world has
become the kingdom of our Lord and of His Christ; and He will
reign forever and ever.”
Revelation 21:2 I saw no temple in it, for the Lord God the Almighty
and the Lamb are its temple. 23 And the city has no need of the sun
or of the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God has illumined it,
and its lamp is the Lamb.
Jude 1:25 to the only God our Savior, through Jesus Christ our
Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion and authority, before all time and
now and forever. Amen.
These three passages state that God is our savior and that He is
separate from Christ. Christ is our savior also and without His death
on the cross we would not be saved. There are of course many
scriptures stating that Jesus Christ is our savior.
Titus 3:4 But when the kindness of God our Savior and His love for
mankind appeared, 5 He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which
we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the
washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit, 6 whom
He poured out upon us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior,
Here is an amazing verse, stating that God and Jesus are both our
savior.
Here are a few more scriptures calling Jesus God (Theos-G2316), but
still not saying that He is Yahweh.
John 20:28 Thomas answered and said to Him, “My Lord and my
God!”
Titus 2:13 looking for the blessed hope and the appearing of the
glory of our great God and Savior, Christ Jesus,
Matthew 1:21 She will bear a Son; and you shall call His name
Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.” 22 Now all this
took place to fulfill what was spoken by the Lord through the
prophet: 23 “BEHOLD, THE VIRGIN SHALL BE WITH CHILD
42 Faith-What I Believe and Why I Believe It
AND SHALL BEAR A SON, AND THEY SHALL CALL HIS NAME
IMMANUEL,” which translated means, “GOD WITH US.” 24 And
Joseph awoke from his sleep and did as the angel of the Lord
commanded him, and took Mary as his wife, 25 but kept her a virgin
until she gave birth to a Son; and he called His name Jesus.
Luke 2:21 And when eight days had passed, before His circumcision,
His name was then called Jesus, the name given by the angel before
He was conceived in the womb.
Luke states here the name was given by an angel before He was
conceived in the womb.
Not only did Jesus receive a new name, but we will also. Just like
Jacob’s name was changed to Israel and many other biblical
character’s names were changed, so will ours. When we (the bride)
marry Jesus we will take on a new name, just like a bride on earth
takes on her husband’s name. And Jesus will also receive a new
name.
Revelation 2:17 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says
to the churches. To him who overcomes, to him I will give some of
the hidden manna, and I will give him a white stone, and a new name
written on the stone which no one knows but he who receives it.’
Hosea 12:2 The Lord also has a dispute with Judah, And will punish
Jacob according to his ways; He will repay him according to his
deeds. 3 In the womb he took his brother by the heel, And in his
maturity he contended with God. 4 Yes, he wrestled with the angel
and prevailed; He wept and sought His favor. He found Him at
Bethel And there He spoke with us,
Matthew 16:15 He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” 16
Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living
God.” 17 And Jesus said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon Barjona,
because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but My Father
44 Faith-What I Believe and Why I Believe It
who is in heaven. 18 I also say to you that you are Peter, and upon
this rock I will build My church; and the gates of Hades will not
overpower it.
Simon said that Jesus was the Son of the living God. And Jesus
applauded Him. Simon did not say you are Yahweh. Jesus said on
this rock or revelation I will build My church. Many Christian’s
believe that the things written in this article are very offensive to
Jesus. What if He (Yeshua) has known these things from the creation
of the world, and these are the truths between Him and His Father?
Maybe we are just a little behind at interpreting the scriptures? The
truth is, very few of us have learned the Trinity Doctrine straight
from the Word of God, but we learned it first as one of the
elementary truths and read the Bible through that lens. What if Jesus’
main goal was and still is to bring glory and honor to His Father who
He loves with all His heart? If you read the gospels with open eyes,
one of Jesus’ main goals was to bring honor and glory and praise to
Yahweh! Everything He did He saw His Father do first. But we in
our blindness have stated they are the same being/essence and in
doing so discount to a degree the majesty of the Father as being
above Jesus. We spend most of our time worshipping only Jesus,
when we should be worshipping them both. Even Jesus’ words are
“red” in the Bible, but Yahweh’s are black. There is an anointing in
this hour of honoring and worshipping Yahweh, who is almost
forgotten at times. I also wonder if the Jewish people would be more
accepting of Yeshua if we told them what is said in John 17:3. “This
is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus
Christ whom You have sent.” There is one true God, and He has a
Son Jesus Christ, who is also our Lord and Messiah.
-Conclusion-
John 14:26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will
send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your
remembrance all that I said to you.
