Logarithmic Properties Lesson Plan

This lesson plan introduces properties of logarithms. Students will review exponential properties and learn how to write logarithmic expressions as sums or differences. They will evaluate logarithms whose base is not 10 or e. Activities include reviewing exponential properties, introducing the cancellation property and addition property of logarithms, and working through examples using these properties in a think-pair-share worksheet. An assigned worksheet will provide practice applying the new concepts.

Lesson Plan Trevor Williams

Course: Precalculus Date: 17 Sep. 2019 Unit: Exponential and Logarithmic Functions Lesson: 6

Lesson Topic: Properties of logarithms

Lesson Objective:
• Work with Properties of Logarithms
• Write a Logarithmic Expression as a Sum or Difference of Logarithms
• Write a Logarithmic Expression as a Single Logarithm

• Evaluate Logarithms Whose Base is Neither 10 Nor e

Activities:
• Review Exponential Properties
– bn · bm = bm+n
4
bn
– bm = bn−m
2
m
– (bn ) = bn·m
−4 −2 2 4
– b0 = 1
• Review expressing exponential equation as logarithmic equation.

bx = y =⇒ logb (y) = x

• Introduce cancellation property: logb (by ) = y, and prove:

logb (by ) = x
bx = by
x=y

• Introduce and prove addition property logb (M · N ) = logb (M ) + logb (N )

logb (M · N ) = logb (bx · by ) M = bx , N = by

= logb (bx+y )
=x+y
= logb (M ) + logb (N ) logb (M ) = x, logb (N ) = y

• Think, Pair, Share Worksheet to discover difference and constant multiplication

properties.
• Remaining lecture time devoted to examples using the properties.
