How To Solve Number Series Problems Easily by Tricks
Step 2: Calculate the differences between the numbers. Observe the pattern in the
differences. If the differences are growing rapidly it might be a square
series, cube series, or multiplicative series.
1. It might be a double or triple series. Here every alternate number or every 3rd
number form a series
Step 3: Sometimes number will be multiplied and will be added another number So
we need to check those patterns
TYPES :
I. Prime number Series :
Example

Answer:
The prime numbers are written alternately.
Example:
(2) : 3,12,48,192,…………,3072.

In competitive exams number series are given and where you need to find missing
numbers. The number series are come in different types. At first you have to
decided what type of series are given in papers then according with this you have to
use shortcut tricks as fast as you can .
This Types of Series are based on square of a number which is in same order and
one square number is missing in that given series.
Example 1: 441, 484, 529, 576?
Answer: 441 = 212, 484 = 222, 529 = 232, 576 = 242 , 625 = 252.
Perfect Cube Series:
This Types of Series are based on cube of a number which is in same order and one
cube number is missing in that given series
Geometric Series:
This type of series are based on ascending or descending order of numbers and
each successive number is obtain by multiplying or dividing the previous number
with a fixed number.
A two tier Arithmetic series is one in which the differences of successive numbers
themselves form an arithmetic series.
Mixed Series:
This type of series are more than one different order are given in a series which
arranged in alternatively in a single series or created according to any non-
conventional rule. This mixed series Examples are describes in separately.
Examples 5:
Answer:
11 x 2 = 22 +2 = 24,
24 x 2 = 48 + 2 = 50,
50 x 2 = 100 + 2 = 102,
3. 3, 10, 101,?
A. 10101
B. 10201
C. 10202
D. 11012
Answer: Option C
Explanation:
Each term in the series is obtained by adding 1 to the square of the preceding
term.
So, missing term = (101)2 + 1 = 10202.

4. In the series 2, 6, 18, 54, ...... what will be the 8th term ?
A. 4370
B. 4374
C. 7443
D. 7434
Answer: Option B
Explanation:
Clearly, 2 x 3 = 6, 6 x 3 = 18, 18 x 3 = 54,.....
So, the series is a G.P. in which a = 2, r = 3.
Therefore 8th term = ar8-1 = ar7 = 2 x 37 = (2 x 2187) = 4374.

A. 117
B. 121
C. 123
D. 129
Answer: Option C
Explanation:
Clearly, 3 + 6 = 9, 9 + 6 = 15,.....
So, the series is an A.P. in which a = 3 and d = 6.

Type I
The mixed series can be of many types. For example, here we shall see the wrong
series kind first. Let us start with a few examples to introduce the concept of mixed
number series.
In the following questions, a series of numbers are present. One of the numbers in the
series doesn’t belong. Select the number that doesn’t belong.
A) 10 B) 22 C) 69 D) 280 E) 480
Answer: This is a mixed series as we shall see in a few moments. To detect the wrong
number. we have to first detect the rule of the series. The rule could be the following:
9 1 + 1 = 10
10 2 + 2 = 22
22 3 + 3 = 69
69 4 + 4 = 280
280 5 + 5 = 1405
Thus not only do we have to detect the rule for the formation of the series but also
compute the terms using the rule. The correct option here is thus E) 480 which is the
wrong number and has to be replaced by 1405.
Questions like these could be a hassle and in such cases, if there is no apparent rule in
one minute, you should move on to other questions and mark this one for future
review.
Type II
The next type in the mixed series is the series where there is a missing number. The
missing number series questions, if any are usually from the mixed number series. A
mixed series can be detected easily, through the fact that it lacks a regular symmetry.
Basically, if you can’t figure out the rule easily, it is most probably a mixed series. Let
us see a few missing numbers mixed series calculations.
In the following question, series of numbers has a missing term. The missing term is
present below in the options. Select the correct number and complete the series.
Answer: This is an easier problem considering that there are a few hints here. the first
hint is that each of the terms is divided by the term number. That is the second term is
divided by the number ‘2’, the third by the number ‘3’, the fourth by the number ‘4’. So
the fifth should have 5 in the denominator. But wait! What if the fifth number is a
factor of 5? Then, in that case, the option will be simply D). But let us examine the
series first.
The first term is 1 and gives no information. The second term is 9. The term number is
2. The question thus is how do you get a 9 from 2? Well (23 + 1) = 9 and thus the
term could be written as (23 + 1)/2 = 9/2. The third term is (33 + 1)/3 = 28/3 and so
on. Thus we have found the rule and the answer to the question is (53 + 1)/5 = 126/5.

Q. What will the integer in place of ‘?’ in the given figure below?
A. 22 B. 14 C. 320 D. 32
Ans: D) 32
Examples Of Shapes
Q. In the given figure below, find the value of ‘?’.
A. 18 B. 19 C. 17 D. 12
Answer: In this figure, as the numbers are given in the form of a circle look out for a clockwise
or anticlockwise direction. Here, start at 2 and see the numbers after every two spaces in the
clockwise direction. You will notice a series forming. Just add three to all the numbers and you
will get that number after two spaces. Thus in place of ?, 17 will be the number. Because when
you add 3 to 14 you will get 17. So, the correct answer is C.
Answer: In this question, you will notice that the top left-hand number i.e. 15 is a summation of
12 and 3 which are the bottom-most numbers. Similarly, adding 22 and 11 given in the second
last row we will get 33. While the numbers on the right-hand side can be obtained by dividing
the bottom numbers with each other. We can divide 12 and 3 which are the bottom-most
numbers and obtain 4 which is on the topmost right side.
Thus try this for every number on the left-hand side as well as on the right-hand side. For the
value of x, 32 + x is 36. So, x is 4. Also, 32/4 = 8. So, the correct answer is B.
