Disc Golf Season Block Plan (9th Grade)

Context

Class: 8th Grade; 14 girls /22 boys; class duration – 90 min.; class meets every other day; 12 classes total;
Group has experienced multiple Sport Education seasons.

Activity: Disc Golf

Equipment/facility available: 5 discs per team (different weights); Course designs (teacher designed/ student
designed).

Team format: Teams of 12 (3 foursomes) (allows for teacher to use graded competition format if appropriate)

Competition format: Tournament meets (a series of 6 rounds of 9-hole Disc golf on multiple courses).

Non-playing Roles: Sports Board; Coach; Captain; Scorekeeper; Statistician; Publicist, Course Judge & Course
designer

Day Class Activities


1 Introduction of Disc Golf – Incl. basic rules, penalty strokes & scoring.
Teacher selects Team Coaches and students apply for Sports Board.
Introduction of basic throwing techniques (i.e., tee shots, approach shots) followed by class wide practice of
“tee shots” and “approach shots.” Coaches and teacher observe practice.
Overview of teacher designed disc course layout (what is par; out-of-bounds etc.).
Closure emphasis on review of throwing techniques.
2 Announcement of three teams of 12; teacher assigns coaches.
Sports Board members announced.
Teams warm up and practice.
Outline of shotgun start & disc golf etiquette (e.g., being away; not standing in throw line).
Practice round with emphasis on shot selection and keeping score.
Teams decide on Team name, color, cheer, motto, etc.
Closure review emphasizes questions about scorekeeping and other issues.
3 Teams warm up and practice.
Overview of Course Judge role and responsibilities.
Teams announce name, color, and cheer
Practice round with official scoring and practice of course judging with teams rotating duty team
responsibilities every three holes.
Closure review of questions regarding scoring, penalties, and field judging.
4 Teams warm up and practice.
Teacher meets with Course Designers and reviews strategies. Designers are to design a 9-hole course to be
used for competition rounds 4-6 (incl. course map, rules on out-of-bounds and penalties; scorecards).
Practice round with official scoring and practice of course judging with teams rotating duty team
responsibilities every three holes. Teams decide on foursomes.
Closure review of questions regarding scoring, penalties, and field judging.
5 Teams warm up and practice.
Competition Round 1 (on Teacher designed course): Team A & B play (Team C is duty team).
Team scores are compiled and given to Team Statisticians
Closure emphasis on playing tactics (e.g., adjusting to wind; handling hazards)
6 Teams warm up and practice.
Competition Round 2 (on Teacher designed course): Team A & C play (Team B is duty team).
Teacher can choose to adjust discs used for competition (i.e., weight)
Team scores are compiled and given to Team Statisticians
Closure emphasis on playing strategies, and students’ concerns over rules and course judging
7 Teams warm up and practice.
Competition Round 3 (on Teacher designed course): Team B & C play (Team A is duty team).
Teacher can choose to adjust discs used for competition (i.e., weight).
Team scores are compiled and given to Team Statisticians
Closure emphasis on playing strategies, and students’ concerns over rules and course judging
8 Team Statisticians post three-round total statistics. Announcement of first half champion team and runner
ups. Teacher meets with Sports Board to review planning requirements for Awards Ceremony/Banquet
Duty team sets up its course while other teams warm up and practice.
Overview of student designed course (course map, hazards; out of bounds, par etc.).
Practice round on Student designed course w. shotgun start
Teacher explains where disc golf can be played in the surrounding community.
Closure emphasis on playing tactics and questions about course design.
9 Guest speaker from local Disc golf club or organization presents workshop on Disc Golf.
Duty team sets up its course while other teams warm up and practice.
As on Day 5: Competition Round 4 (on Student designed course)
Team scores are compiled and given to Team Statisticians
Closure focuses on the day’s round.
10 Duty team sets up its course while other teams warm up and practice.
As on Day 6: Competition Round 5 (on Student designed course).
Team scores are compiled and given to Team Statisticians
Closure focuses on the day’s round and Sports Board announces plans for Culminating event.
11 Duty team sets up its course while other teams warm up and practice.
As on Day 7: Competition Round 6 (on Student designed course).
Team scores are compiled and given to Team Statisticians
Closure focuses on the day’s round.
12 Team Statisticians post three-round total statistics. Announcement of second half champion team and
runner-ups.
Awards Ceremony with banquet.
