Its Project Proposal: Group Members

This project proposal aims to understand the role of intelligent transportation systems in improving the operational efficiency of high-speed rail networks. The proposal outlines objectives to study technologies used globally to increase rail capacity and manage congestion, examine systems like ERTMS, understand implementation challenges, and conduct a comparative analysis of ERTMS and India's Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed rail corridor. The methodology will involve researching reports and articles on technologies implemented in different rail networks and comparing this data to the Indian context to understand challenges of deploying intelligent transportation systems.

Understanding the role of ITS in High-Speed railway systems

Around 75% of the world’s population will live in urban settlements by 2050 which makes mass transportation
systems having a huge global impact in terms of mobility, transportation infrastructure, etc. Of the available mass
transportation systems, High-speed rails play an important role by reducing average individual travel hours for
commuters from city to city. Advancements in technologies in the past couple of decades have led to continuous
data collection and monitoring of High-speed railway systems, which enables to maintain operational efficiency and
improve safety and provide reliable and safe transportation systems across the globe.

Objective:

The objective of doing this project is to understand the role of Intelligent Transportation Systems in
improving the operational efficiency of the High-speed rail network systems.

 What are different technologies used across the globe by various railway systems to increase the capacity
of existing lines and manage congestion?
 Understanding railway systems like ERTMS(1) (The European Rail Traffic Management System)
 What are the problems faced, while implementing these projects and how are these evaluated.
 A comparative study between ERTMS and Mumbai–Ahmedabad high-speed rail corridor and understand
challenges faced.

Methodology:

 Understanding different technologies implemented in different railway networks through various reports,
research articles, and annual reports.
 We are comparing the above data to the Indian context and understanding difficulties in implementing ITS
in Mumbai–Ahmedabad high-speed rail corridor.
