Intercultural Awareness
"Culture is communication and
communication is culture."
CULTURE
Culture
Culture is the characteristics and knowledge of
a particular group of people, encompassing
language, religion, cuisine, social habits, music
and arts. It can also be defined as an
appreciation of the arts and human intellectual
achievement. In both views of culture, examples
can provide a goodway to get a quick
understanding of culture.

APPROPRIATION
Cultural Appropriation
Cultural appropriation is the adoption or taking of
specific elements (such as ideas, symbols, artifacts,
images, art, rituals, icons, behavior, music, styles) of
one culture by another culture. It was first appeared in
the latter half of the twentieth century. It is generally
applied when the subject culture is a minority culture
or somehow subordinate in social, political, economic,
or military status to the appropriating culture.

AWARENESS
Cultural Awareness
Cultural Awareness is the foundation of
communication and it involves the ability of
standing back from ourselves and becoming
aware of our cultural values, beliefs and
perceptions. It becomes central when we have to
interact with people from other cultures. People
see, interpret and evaluate things in a different
way.
Degrees of Cultural Awareness
Parochial Stage - My way is the only way 1

Ethnocentric Stage - I know their way, but my way is better 2

Synergistic Stage - My Way and Their Way 3

Participatory Third Culture Stage - Our Way 4

INTERCULTURAL
AWARENESS
Intercultural Awareness
Intercultural awareness is an understanding of
both cultures, your own and other cultures, and
particularly the similarities and differences
between them. These similarities and differences
may be in terms of values, beliefs, or behavior.
Understanding that people from different cultures
have different values is the foundation to good
intercultural relationships.
