Cooling Tower
Function : to reduce heat from cooling water return for cooling system from 40 0 C
to 250 C.
Type : Induced Draft Cooling Tower
Step by step calculating size of the cooling tower
1. Calculate water requirement to be cooled (W)
2. Define inlet temperatur (T1) and outlet temperature (T2) of cooling water
3. Define relative humdity to calclate dry bulb temperature (Tdb) and wet bulb
temperature (Twb) of air from psycrhomatric chart
4. Calculate temperature approach
temperature approach = T2-Twb
5. Calculate cooling range
cooling range = T1-T2

The following empirical equation is used to calculate the overall heat
transfer coefficient from Perry’s Handbook with the index n = 0.67. The k value
falls in the range 3.75 ≤ k ≤ 5.25 as suggested by AICHE for SI unit. Assuming k
=4.75.

For the calculation of wet bulb temperature, the most economical operation
of rotary dryer can be achieved for Nt is in general between 1.5 and 2.5 (Mujumdar,
2014). Assuming the value of Nt = 2, so wet bulb temperature can be calculated by
trial and error method.
𝑇𝐴𝑖𝑛 − 𝑇𝑤
𝑁𝑡 = ln ( )
𝑇𝐴𝑜𝑢𝑡 − 𝑇𝑤
3. Calculating the logarithmic mean temperature difference:
(𝑇𝐴𝑖𝑛 − 𝑇𝑤 ) − (𝑇𝐴𝑜𝑢𝑡 − 𝑇𝑤 )
(∆𝑇)𝑙𝑚 =
𝑇 −𝑇
ln (𝑇 𝐴𝑖𝑛 − 𝑇𝑤 )
𝐴𝑜𝑢𝑡 𝑤
After that, the L/D ratio should be checked, because L/D ratio is efficient
between 4 and 10 for industrial dryers (Mujumdar, 2014).
4. Calculation of RPM, Flight Design & Residence Time
Speed values ranges 0.1 to 0.5 m/s (van’t Land, 2012). Assuming the
peripheral speed of rotation to be 0.1 m/s.

Finfan Cooler
Finfan cooler sizing calculation is done by using Aspen Design and Rating
software. This software can calculate sizing calculation and resulting mechanical
drawing of finfan cooler. Here are the steps:
1. Open the software, choose new, and pick air cooled.

PUMP
There are several steps to sizing pump. The first step is started with finding
out physical properties of the streams which will go into the pumps and other
information needed in the calculation (mass flow, pressure inlet, pressure output,
vapor pressure, temperature, density, static head, pipe length after pump). By using
these formula below, the information of Power, Head, and NPSHa of each pump
can be obtained. The pump sizing is based on the Heuristic 38 from Seider Book.
The equation for calculation power and NPSHa are shown below.
𝑑𝑊𝑎𝑜 𝑑𝑊𝑝𝑢𝑚𝑝 𝑃 𝑉2
− =− = ∆ ( + 𝑔𝑧 + ) + 𝐹
𝑑𝑚 𝑑𝑚 𝜌 2
𝑃1(𝑎𝑡𝑚) 𝑉22 𝐹 𝑃𝑣𝑎𝑝𝑜𝑟
𝑁𝑃𝑆𝐻𝑎 = (𝑧 )
− 2 − 𝑧1 − − −
𝜌𝑔 2𝑔 𝑔 𝜌𝑔
Assumptions :
𝜂𝑝𝑢𝑚𝑝 = 75%
The terms of velocity difference neglected due to its small number
No fitting
The pump power requirement can be calculated by equation below.
𝐹𝐻𝑃 = 𝑊 = 𝑚̇ × 𝑔 × 𝐻
where 𝑚 is mass flow, g is gravity acceleration, and H is head.
The 𝑊𝑎𝑐𝑡 or BHP (brake horse power) is calculated by equation below.
𝑊𝑎𝑐𝑡 = 𝐵𝐻𝑃 = 𝐹𝐻𝑃 × 𝜂𝑝𝑢𝑚𝑝

TANK AND VESSEL
The steps for calculating tank and vessel size are:
1. Determine Storage Capacity.
2. Choose Storage Tank Type: Vertical or Horizontal, in this part, determine
which type of storage tank based on plant storage capacity.
3. In this part, determine length and diameter ratio of storage based on vessel
function. Because the tanks used is using concrete plant so the L/D ratio
around 0.8-1. In this case, choose 0.8 ratio. Because the taller tank, will be
more troubled by wind.
4. Calculate Internal Diameter and Length, with 0.8 L/D ratio. So diameter
calculation equation is:
𝐷
𝑆𝑡𝑜𝑟𝑎𝑔𝑒 𝐶𝑎𝑝𝑎𝑐𝑖𝑡𝑦 (𝑚3 ) = 𝜋𝐿( )2
2
4𝐷 𝐷
𝑆𝑡𝑜𝑟𝑎𝑔𝑒 𝐶𝑎𝑝𝑎𝑐𝑖𝑡𝑦 (𝑚3 ) = 𝜋( )( )2
5 2
𝑆𝑡𝑜𝑟𝑎𝑔𝑒 𝐶𝑎𝑝𝑎𝑐𝑖𝑡𝑦 1/3
𝐷𝑖𝑎𝑚𝑒𝑡𝑒𝑟 (𝑚) = ( )
𝜋/5
𝐿𝑒𝑛𝑔𝑡ℎ (𝑚) = 0.8𝐷
5. Determine Material of Storage Tank.
Basic consideration of determining material is corrosion resistance. There
are no corrosive material/fluids used in this plan so Carbon Steel SA 283.
The table for material type is shown on figure below.

7. Assuming effective length to obtain the light phase residence time, and
seam to seam length for heavy phase travelling time. Because the heavy
phase travelling time is needed to be equal as the light phase residence
time, or at least the light phase residence time is bigger than the heavy
phase travelling time.
8. From the assumption of seam to seam length, see whether the L/D ratio
is between 3-5. If the ratio is around the 3-5, the diameter and the seam
to seam length is approvable.
The configuration of decanter is shown below.

5. Choose whether the belt has inclination or not. For the maximum
inclination is depends on the material (See Table 5.3 on Walas’ Book).
6. If there is an inclination calculate the rise of belt conveyor.
