Education 4.0: Rebooting Philippine teacher education

(The Philippine Star) - July 28, 2019 - 12:00am

MANILA, Philippines — Education 4.0 is the new buzzword, and it is disrupting our
traditional concept of schooling, teaching and learning. A new generation of learners
has invaded our schools replacing the millennials — the Generation Z or the Internet
Generation (iGen) learners who are not only tech-savvy, but also technology-
dependent, practically born with a smartphone in their hands and regard technology
as essential as air and water. They have never seen the world without the internet,
and thus cannot imagine living without being connected. They are the true archetype
of digital natives. They live and breathe technology. Growing up connected to the
cyber world using different devices enables them to process and absorb tons of
information 24/7. They are social media addicts. The hyper-connected environment
they grew up in taught them not only the skills, but also more interestingly, the habits
to switch tasks effortlessly. Their minds are constantly flowing and moving in different
directions. They can thrive in 4D simulated or augmented reality environments.

According to Dr. Darla Rothman, the brains of this internet generation are wired to
perceive information visually because the region of their brain for visual ability is more
developed due to constant exposure to fast-paced, sensory-laden multimedia
environment. Their brain is wired to expect information immediately in bites and
chunks, shortening their attention span. Rothman estimates that the average attention
span of this generation in online platforms is eight seconds and, in the classroom, is
seven to 10 minutes. The iGen learners favor storytelling, explainer videos, interactive
games, collaborative projects, experiential learning and other forms of visualization.
They are good at video blogging and know that they have the opportunity to be
financially independent of their parents by being a social media influencer. They have
access to technologies that enable them to be entrepreneurial. They can work and
study at the same time.
Climate change, ecology-related issues and healthy lifestyles are their preferred
causes.

CONTENT:

Education 4.0 is the new trend of learning in this generation. Learners often engage
themselves in the virtual world through the use of the different technologies that we
have as their medium of learning. More so, Education 4.0 is a manifestation that the
education system that we have is thriving to achieve global competence that will equip
learners with ideas and innovations for nation building. This was developed as a
response to create trained, qualified soon to be young professionals who are ready for
a highly globalized and digital-driven world of work.

REFLECTION:

This idea would be a plus for me especially that the Philippines is considered a
developing country. Education still play a vital role in shaping our country and if we
thrive to innovate and create accessible and quality education for all this will be very
beneficial for the country. The changes in our educational system is a manifestation
that we are gradually moving forward as a nation. But one thing that I have also
realized is that if we really want the Education 4.0 as a revitalizing tool in achieving
global competence, the concerned agency should really intensify this program across
the country. Because, there are still areas that has been left out over decades and this
is something that the government must address. As the saying goes “If you want to go
fast, walk alone. But if you want to go far, walk together.” In order for us to reach our
aspirations in our education system, we need to reach out in every areas of this country
so that together we can move forward as one nation.
APPLICATION:

Upon reading some articles about Education 4.0 in the Philippines, I believe that I can
apply this to my time as an educator. I think by that time, technology is found in every
corner of this archipelago. I will use this platform to help my students understand the
lesson in a way that is in line with their learning styles. Because for me, technology
has also its pros it is just a matter on how we as teachers deal with it. If we allow our
students to abuse the use of technology then it’s a failure for us but if we let them
understand how to use technology in a classroom setting effectively then we succeed
as teachers.
