INTRODUCTION

AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY IN INDIA

OVERVIEW
The Indian Automobile Industry manufactures over 11 million vehicles and exports
about 1.5 million each year. The dominant products of the industry are two-wheelers
with a market share of over 75% and passenger cars with a market share of about
16%. Commercial vehicles and three-wheelers share about 9% of the market between
them.

About 91% of the vehicles sold are used by households and only about 9% for
commercial purposes. The industry has a turnover of more than USD $35 billion and
provides direct and indirect employment to over 13 million people.

The supply chain is similar to the supply chain of the automotive industry in Europe
and America.

Interestingly, the level of trade exports in this sector in India has been medium and
imports have been low. However, this is rapidly changing and both exports and
imports are increasing.

The demand determinants of the industry are factors like affordability, product
innovation, infrastructure and price of fuel. Also, the basis of competition in the sector
is high and increasing, and its life cycle stage is growth. With a rapidly growing
middle class, all the advantages of this sector in India are yet to be leveraged.

With a high cost of developing production facilities, limited accessibility to new

technology, and increasing competition, the barriers to enter the Indian Automotive
sector are high.

On the other hand, India has a well-developed tax structure. The power to levy taxes
and duties is distributed among the three tiers of Government. The cost structure of
the industry is fairly traditional, but the profitability of motor vehicle manufacturers has
been rising over the past five years.

Major players, like Tata Motors and Maruti Suzuki have material cost of about 80%
but are recording profits after tax of about 6% to 11%.

The level of technology change in the Motor vehicle Industry has been high but, the
rate of change in technology has been medium. Investment in the technology by the
producers has been high. System-suppliers of integrated components and sub-systems

1
A Study on Maruti Suzuki Cars and Comparison of Maruti Suzuki Cars with
other Companies Cars

have become the order of the day. However, further investment in new technologies will
help the industry be more competitive. Over the past few years, the industry has been
volatile.
Currently, India's increasing per capita disposable income which is expected to rise by
106% by 2017 and growth in exports is playing a major role in the rise and
competitiveness of the industry.

Tata Motors is leading the commercial vehicle segment with a market share of about
64%. Maruti Suzuki is leading the passenger vehicle segment with a market share of
46%. Hyundai Motor India Limited and Mahindra and Mahindra are focusing
expanding their footprint in the overseas market.

Hero MotoCorp is occupying over 41% and sharing 26% of the two-wheeler market
in India with Bajaj Auto. Bajaj Auto in itself is occupying about 58% of the three-
wheeler market.

Consumers are very important of the survival of the Motor Vehicle manufacturing
industry. In 2008-09, customer sentiment dropped, which burned on the augmentation
in demand of cars.

Steel is the major input used by manufacturers and the rise in price of steel is putting a
cost pressure on manufacturers and cost is getting transferred to the end consumer.

The price of oil and petrol affect the driving habits of consumers and the type of car
they buy.

The key to success in the industry is to improve labour productivity, labour flexibility,
and capital efficiency. Having quality manpower, infrastructure improvements, and
raw material availability also play a major role.
Access to latest and most efficient technology and techniques will bring competitive
advantage to the major players. Utilising manufacturing plants to optimum level and
understanding implications from the government policies are the essentials in the
Automotive Industry of India.

Both, Industry and Indian Government are obligated to intervene the Indian Automotive
industry. The Indian government should facilitate infrastructure creation, create
favourable and predictable business environment, attract investment and promote
research and development.

The role of Industry will primarily be in designing and manufacturing products of

world-class quality establishing cost competitiveness and improving productivity in

labour and in capital. With a combined effort, the Indian Automotive industry will
emerge as the destination of choice in the world for design and manufacturing of
automobiles. The Indian market offers endless possibilities for investors.

The automotive industry in India is one of the largest in the world and one of the
fastest growing globally. India's passenger car and commercial vehicle manufacturing
industry is the sixth largest in the world, with an annual production of more than 3.9
million units in 2011.

According to recent reports, India overtook Brazil and became the sixth largest
passenger vehicle producer in the world (beating such old and new auto makers as
Belgium, United Kingdom, Italy, Canada, Mexico, Russia, Spain, France, Brazil),
growing 16 to 18 per cent to sell around three million units in the course of 2011-
12. In 2009, India emerged as Asia's fourth largest exporter ofpassenger cars, behind
Japan, South Korea, and Thailand. In 2010, India beat Thailand to become Asia's third
largest exporter of passenger cars.

As of 2010, India is home to 40 million passenger vehicles. More than 3.7 million
automotive vehicles were produced in India in 2010 (an increase of 33.9%), making
the country the second (after China) fastest growing automobile market in the world.

According to the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers, annual vehicle sales

are projected to increase to 5 million by 2017 and more than 9 million by 2020. By
2050, the country is expected to top the world in car volumes with approximately 611
million vehicles on the nation's roads.

The majority of India's car manufacturing industry is based around three clusters in
the south, west and north. The southern cluster consisting of Chennai and Bangaloreis
the biggest with 35% of the revenue share.

The western hub near Mumbai and Pune contributes to 33% of the market and the
northern cluster around the National Capital Region contributes 32%. Chennai, is also
referred to as the "Detroit of India" with the India operations
of Ford, Hyundai, Renault, Mitsubishi, Nissan, BMW, Hindustan Motors, Daimler,
Caparo and PSA Peugeot Citroën is about to begin their operations by 2014.

Chennai accounts for 60% of the country's automotive

exports. Gurgaon and Manesar in Haryana form the northern cluster where the
country's largest car manufacturer, Maruti Suzuki, is based.
The Chakancorridor near Pune, Maharashtra is the western cluster with companies
like General Motors,Volkswagen, Skoda, Mahindra and Mahindra, Tata
3

Motors, Mercedes Benz, Land Rover, Fiat andForce Motors having assembly plants
in the area. Aurangabad with Audi, Skoda andVolkswagen also forms part of the
western cluster.

Another emerging cluster is in the state ofGujarat with manufacturing facility

of General Motors in Halol and further planned for Tata Nano attheir plant in Sanand.

Ford, Maruti Suzuki and Peugeot-Citroen plants are also set to come up in
Gujarat. Kolkata with Hindustan Motors, Noida with Honda and
Bangalore with Toyota are some of the other automotive manufacturing regions
around the country.

HISTORY
The first car ran on India's roads in 1897. Until the 1930s, cars were imported directly,
but in very small numbers.

Embryonic automotive industry emerged in India in the 1940s. Mahindra &

Mahindra was established by two brothers as a trading company in 1945, and began
assembly of Jeep CJ-3A utility vehicles under license from Willys.

The company soon branched out into the manufacture of light commercial
vehicles (LCVs) and agricultural tractors.

Following the independence, in 1947, the Government of India and the private
sector launched efforts to create an automotive component manufacturing industry to
supply to the automobile industry.

However, the growth was relatively slow in the 1950s and 1960s due
to nationalization and the license raj which hampered the Indian private sector.

Total restrictions for import of vehicles was set and after 1970 the automotive
industry started to grow, but the growth was mainly driven by tractors, commercial
vehicles and scooters.

Cars were still a major luxury. Japanese manufacturers entered the Indian market
ultimately leading to the establishment of Maruti Udyog. A number of foreign firms
initiated joint ventures with Indian companies.

In the 1980s, a number of Japanese manufacturers launched joint-ventures for

building motorcycles and light commercial-vehicles. It was at this time that the Indian
government chose Suzuki for its joint-venture to manufacture small cars.

4
A Study on Maruti Suzuki Cars and Comparison of Maruti Suzuki Cars with
other Companies Cars

Following the economic liberalization in 1991 and the gradual weakening of the
license raj, a number of Indian and multi-national car companies launched operations.

Since then, automotive component and automobile manufacturing growth has

accelerated to meet domestic and export demands.

Following economic liberalization in India in 1991, the Indian automotive industry

has demonstrated sustained growth as a result of increased competitiveness and
relaxed restrictions.

Several Indian automobile manufacturers such as Tata Motors, Maruti

Suzuki and Mahindra and Mahindra, expanded their domestic and international
operations.

India's robust economic growth led to the further expansion of its domestic
automobile market which has attracted significant India-specific investment by
multinational automobile manufacturers.

In February 2009, monthly sales of passenger cars in India exceeded 100,000

units and has since grown rapidly to a record monthly high of 182,992 units in
October 2009.

From 2003 to 2010, car sales in India have progressed at a CAGR of 13.7%, and with
only 10% of Indian households owning a car in 2009 (whereas this figure reaches
80% in Switzerland for example) this progression is unlikely to stop in the coming
decade. Congestion of Indian roads, more than market demand, will likely be the
limiting factor.

SIAM is the apex industry body representing all the vehicle manufacturers, home-
grown and international, in India.
PRODUCT AND SERVICE SEGMENTATION
The automotive industry of India is categorised into passenger cars, two-wheelers,
commercial vehicles and three-wheelers, with two-wheelers dominating the market.
More than 75% of the vehicles sold are two-wheelers.

Nearly 59% of these two-wheelers sold were motorcycles and about 12%
were scooters. Mopeds occupy a small portion in the two-wheeler market however;
electric two-wheelers are yet to penetrate.

The passenger vehicles are further categorised into passenger cars, utility vehicles and
multi-purpose vehicles. All sedan, hatchback, station wagon and sports cars fall under
passenger cars.Tata Nano, is the world's cheapest passenger car, manufactured

5
A Study on Maruti Suzuki Cars and Comparison of Maruti Suzuki Cars with

by Tata Motors - a leading automaker of India. Multi-purpose vehicles or people-

carriers are similar in shape to a van and are taller than a sedan, hatchback or a station
wagon, and are designed for maximum interior room. Utility vehicles are designed for
specific tasks. The passenger vehicles manufacturing account for about 15% of the
market in India.

Commercial vehicles are categorised into heavy, medium and light. They account for
about 5% of the market.

Three-wheelers are categorised into passenger carriers and goods carriers. Three-
wheelers account for about 4% of the market in India.
VEHICLE REGISTRATION
India had over 100 million vehicles registered on its roads in the year 2008. This is a
growth of about 100% in the past 9 years. Over 77% and about 77 million of these
vehicles are two-wheelers, about 14% and over 14 million are cars, jeeps and taxis. Over
5 million and over 1 million vehicles registered are goods vehicles and buses
respectively.

Two-wheelers account a significant market share. Tata Motors with the launch of Tata
Nano is trying to attract some of these two-wheeler buyers to buy a small, cheap and
affordable passenger car.

ALTO K10 AND HYUNDAI ION COMPARISION

OVERVIEW
The Alto is India’s favourite car. And we all know why – its low purchase price,
fantastic fuel economy and the ease of getting it sorted, if anything were to go wrong
are a few but telling reasons.

There’s however another reason – the lack of options. Not that one couldn’t buy other
cars for similar money give or take a few thousands; there’s the Nano, the Spark and
even the Santro, but then none really ticked all the right boxes.

Naturally then, Maruti had to do something and out came the Alto K10. It had a better
engine, more equipment and overall a more upmarket positioning.

It was the car for the young. It’s not taken over the mantle from the standard Alto yet;
something the second largest car maker Hyundai thinks its latest can.

Say hello to the Eon; a properly good looking car that promises to check everything
we said about the Alto in the opening statement. So, Heir apparents Pictures: Suresh
Narayanan does it? And does it do it better than the K10?

7
A Study on Maruti Suzuki Cars and Comparison of Maruti Suzuki Cars with
other Companies Cars

EXTERIOR AND ENTERIOR

The Hyundai's interiors are pleasant, scream of quality and are better ergonomically
as well compared to those of the Alto K10

The Alto K10 might be a reasonably recent launch, but next to the Eon it shows its
roots. Everything from its exterior design; be it the panels, the door handles, the lack
of lines to the lights look as they belong to a decade gone by.
The Eon on the other hand looks completely modern. It looks newer than its own
sibling, the i20, in fact! Then once you step inside, the differences are just too huge to
handle.
The K10 is all grey, and a boring grey at that. One look at the plastic all round and
you know it has been built to a cost. It has no sense of opulence at all.

8
A Study on Maruti Suzuki Cars and Comparison of Maruti Suzuki Cars with
other Companies Cars

Hyundai then has done a brilliant job with the Eon. Not only is the design of the
interiors contemporary; the colour combination, the plastics, the ergonomics and even
the operability of switches and knobs is so much better on the Eon.

It clearly feels like one is inside a car that belongs to a segment above. And that alone
should swing a lot of buyers in its direction. In terms of space there’s not much to choose
between the two.

Yes, the Eon has more headroom all round for it is a tall boy design (courtesy it being
based on the Santro). But this apart, in terms of usable kneeroom at the back (read
AUTO BILD INDIA's standard 1m measurement), both the K10 and the Eon are
identical.

The Eon though does offer more shoulder room, both front and back, and is in fact
roomier up front. It also has a bigger boot. Seating again is more comfortable on the
Hyundai, and so is getting in and out.

The latter is thanks to wider opening doors and a higher, more comfortable
ingress/egress height.

The Eon clearly steam rolls the Alto in the bout above, but begin driving, and the Alto
is the one that gets you hooked (in relative terms, of course). Now, if you are one who
has no passion for driving, the difference won’t matter much.

Both the Alto and the Eon have reasonably light steering and clutch, easy to reach
gear shifters that have decent shift quality as well. The brake feel and pick up too is
something that works unobtrusively on both cars.
So in that sense, for a regular city commuter it doesn’t really matter which one you
buy in terms of drive, but do remember, the Eon does get very vibey and irritatingly
so even for the non-passionate individual.

9
A Study on Maruti Suzuki Cars and Comparison of Maruti Suzuki Cars with
other Companies Cars

On the K10 everything seems a tad too close. Plus, the plastics look cheap and the
design takes you back a decade, if not more. Fit and finish though is acceptable

The steering too, feels better on the Alto when driving aggressively. Now, there’s not
much feedback from either steering wheels, but the Alto’s is more predictable and direct
compared to the Eon.

The same holds true for handling. The Alto corners flatter in comparison to the Eon,
and feels more willing and controllable to chuck harder into bends.
The Eon on the other hand feels soggy and then it rolls around corners more too.
Moreover, if the surface is undulating, the Eon also tends to wallow more.

However, if you are going to be using these cars for everyday day work related
commute, which we believe, will be their primary roles, the Eon’s better ride quality
will find favour with most.

10
A Study on Maruti Suzuki Cars and Comparison of Maruti Suzuki Cars with
other Companies Cars

The Hyundai's low speed ride, in particular, is better; it feels like a bigger, more planted
car in comparison to the Alto. The bump absorption is plusher and there's little
vibration or noise that creeps into the cabin.

The K10 in comparison feels like a lighter car that's finding it difficult to cope with
the road irregularities. It's jumpier and noisier compared to the Eon.

The soft setup, as it's said, can only take you so far. So, it's not surprising that the Eon
feels more out of shape and less stable compared to the K10 on the same section of road
at speeds of over 80kmph.

In fact, the sense of speed as a result is heightened more on the Eon than the K10. So,
when cruising at speeds close to 100kmph, the Alto feels a lot more confident and one
doesn't mind pushing it.

Engine & Gearbox: Hyundai Eon VS Maruti Suzuki Alto K10

Hyundai Eon Eon's 814cc engine is basically the Santro engine, but minus one
cylinder. It's only an average performer
However, if you like driving but are constricted by a budget, the Alto is clearly the
one that’s more exciting.

It has the better engine; one that revs more easily and is a lot more spirited than the Eon.
Be it dumping the clutch for a quick getaway from a traffic light or simply accelerating
through the gears to overtake, the K10 is the lighter of the two on its feet.

Maruti Suzuki Alto K10 The 998cc engine is the highlight of the K10 package. Not
only is it peppy, it's also very fuel efficient
The Eon feels strained in comparison. The engine sounds coarse when revved hard, plus
there are constant vibrations that can be felt on the gear shifter as well as the pedals,
which get bothersome soon.

12
A Study on Maruti Suzuki Cars and Comparison of Maruti Suzuki Cars with

Scorecard & Verdict: Hyundai Eon VS Maruti Suzuki Alto K10

Hyundai Eon- Eon's strength is its modernity in terms of design, quality and
ergonomics. It's better equipped too in the trims we have on test here.

Maruti Suzuki Alto K10- The Alto has a spunky engine and it might still be a
better bet if you seriously like driving. But for everything else, the Eon is the car.
Scorecard

Body: Space wise, the Eon offers more particularly at the front. It has more head and
shoulder room. Ditto at the rear. But, the kneeroom for both at the rear is near
identical. The Eon though has a bigger boot. Moreover, the overall quality is much
better and so is the ambience, not to mention with a single airbag meant only for the
driver, it scores more here too.
Drive: The Drive head was always going to go Alto K10's way. It does have the better
engine, after all. Not only is the K10 quicker off the line by close to two seconds in

13
A Study on Maruti Suzuki Cars and Comparison of Maruti Suzuki Cars with
other Companies Cars

the run upto 100kmph, it also has a significantly higher top speed. Even in-gear times
are better, making the K10 more driveable no matter what gear you choose. To top it
all; it is more fuel efficient as well.
Comfort: Be it ride quality, especially at slower speeds, or seating comfort, or simply
getting in or out of the car for that matter, the Eon does all of it better. It also boasts of
more comfort equipment and better operability too. The only area where the K10 betters
the Hyundai is in the handling department. The Maruti is also more fun in this regard.
Dynamics: As we said, the K10 is more dynamically able. This includes things like
steering response. Now, the K10's steering isn't great, but compared to the Eon it is
certainly better. Given its better visibility, the K10 is also easier to drive in the city, and
to park too. Surprisingly, it stops sooner too, though brake feel on both cars is similar.
Cost: As the Test Results show, the Eon is the better product. But add the Cost to the
picture and the K10 strikes back with a vengeance. It almost negates the seven- point
advantage of the Hyundai on lower purchase price and better resale. In the end
though, the Hyundai's better warranty comes to its rescue.
Verdict
We have considered the most expensive versions of the two cars on test here. And as
is clear from our Scorecard, even though the Eon is a much better product; be it ride,
seating comfort, equipment, look and feel, boot space and most importantly, quality and
value, the Alto still runs it very close. And the answer to that again lies in our Scorecard.
If you look at the cost equation, it is clear even though the Alto has poorer warranty; its
purchase price advantage and better resale bring it very close to winning this test. Of
course, having the better engine, better handling and minutely better steering helps as
well. But, in the end, it’s still the Eon, the winner of this test, which makes better buying
sense.

Comparison Test: Fiat Grande Punto vs Maruti

Suzuki Swift vs Toyota Etios Liva

The new Swift is a no-brainer purchase in the hatchback segment,

particularly when it comes to petrol power. But, what about the diesel
version of the car; is there a better alternative; a better find? AUTO
BILD INDIA‟s Scorecard has the answer to that
The new Swift clearly has swept everyone off their feet. It won The
Golden Steering Wheel as well as the ICOTY. Then, the petrol one
charmed our testers and the Scorecard enough to win the hatchback
fight a few issues back. And we are not the only ones because the
sales of the new Swift are soaring too, which clearly means, you, the
buyer, are lapping it up as well. Now, the petrol Swift is clearly very
good. The question is - can the same be said about the diesel version?
To find out we have brought along two relatively new cars. The Etios
Liva diesel launched in September last year is selling decently well
itself and carries the badge most Indians would love to show off – Toyota.
As for the Grande Punto; Fiat has only just introduced the
2012 edition. It gets higher ground clearance, mild alteration to the
interiors, improved quality and even a proper rear split seat. So, can one
of the latter two be a better find than the Swift?

15
A Study on Maruti Suzuki Cars and Comparison of Maruti Suzuki Cars with
other Companies Cars

Insides of the Punto look attractive and quality has improved too. But,
it still needs improvement. It's the best equipped car here, nonetheless

If car dynamics is what drives you, in this trio it is the Fiat Grande
Punto that tops most aspects related to fun. Yes, it could do with a
spunkier engine, but otherwise, it‟s spot on. The steering is by far the
best here. It‟s quick, precise and the richest when it comes to
returning feedback. So, the involvement level is automatically higher
compared to the other two.
It‟s also got a good setup for handling, making it a hoot to drive
around twisty roads, the increased ground clearance notwithstanding.
There‟s body roll, no doubt, but it rarely gets in the way. One can
point and place the car exactly where one wants in a corner and
expect the car to toe that line without question. The Punto reacts to
the slightest of steering inputs and even if erratic inputs from the
driver does overwhelm the car‟s grip, the little Fiat is quite forgiving
and hence easy to correct. What‟s more, the Punto also has the best

16
A Study on Maruti Suzuki Cars and Comparison of Maruti Suzuki Cars with
other Companies Cars

ride in this bunch. Slow speed or high, bad bumps or mild ones,
undulations or road joints, it handles these with finesse missing on both
the Swift and the Liva.

Good looking, well put together and reasonably well equipped, the
Swift's insides are the best compromise here and a big improvement
from before

Mass market appeal The fairytale for the Fiat, sadly, ends here. It
might be great to drive, but for all practical purposes, it‟s lost in this
group. Space for occupants, particularly for those at the back is
seriously limited. It‟s ergonomically quite poor too, especially in this
company. The pedals and seats in particular for the driver are very
difficult to get used to, leave apart getting comfortable with.
The Liva in comparison has more mass market appeal. To begin with,
it has a lot more room at the back. In fact, it‟s also more spacious
than the Swift. The ride, at slow speeds is absorbent too, but the Liva
does tend to struggle at higher speeds. There's quite a bit of Pictures:

17
A Study on Maruti Suzuki Cars and Comparison of Maruti Suzuki Cars with
other Companies Cars

Suresh Narayanan suspension vibration that seeps in, and the road
holding too takes a beating with the car feeling nervous over an
undulated road. Having a steering that's vague not just in this company,
but otherwise as well, doesn't help either.

Easily the most drab interiors among the three, the Liva also doesn't
come with much equipment. Quality, both in terms of look and feel
aren't good either

But, we do appreciate the amount of stowage that‟s on offer. The Liva

has the largest glovebox here, door pockets that are handy and these
can hold bottles too. There‟s some storage even on the central tunnel.
It‟s also easy to get comfortable with the Liva from the word go. The
seats are reasonably comfortable; these aren‟t as comfortable as the
Swift's, but the overall ergonomics – the position of the steering wheel,
the controls, the pedals as well as the placement of the gear shifter are
nicely thought out. It‟s also easy to see out of, making it less
harrowing to drive in claustrophobic city traffic. Then of course, it

18
A Study on Maruti Suzuki Cars and Comparison of Maruti Suzuki Cars with
other Companies Cars

comes with the Toyota badge, which a lot of buyers find appealing. Not
that everything is up to that sort of standard inside the car. The plastics
– both the look and feel of it are the tackiest in this test. Also, there‟s
hardly any equipment that comes as standard .
The Swift then, even with the diesel engine is the best bet. Yes, it‟s not
as well equipped as the Punto, or as spacious as the Liva. And it
doesn‟t carry a snob badge either. But, if you are looking for a good
diesel runabout, the Swift does have all the bases covered.

Engine & Gearbox: Fiat Grande Punto vs Maruti Suzuki Swift

vs Toyota Etios Liva

Fiat Grande Punto -Punto's engine is the same as the Swift's and
boasts more power on paper
First, the engine. It is the sweetest in this group. It might be the same
as the Punto‟s with more power available in the latter on paper, but in
the real world, it helps the Swift accelerate quicker, post better roll-on
times (an indication of how quickly the car accelerates in a particular
gear), get to a higher top speed and best of all... it helps the Maruti
return better fuel economy as well. In fact, why just the Punto, the Swift
manages to eclipse the Liva in these aspects as well.

19
A Study on Maruti Suzuki Cars and Comparison of Maruti Suzuki Cars with
other Companies Cars

Maruti Suzuki Swift -Swift's 1.3-litre diesel is the best here, be it

performance or fuel economy
The Liva, which gets the diesel engine from its elder sibling, the
Corolla Altis, does perform better than the Fiat, nonetheless. For those
interested, the Liva's engine might be from the Corolla, but it's not in
the same state of tune. So, even with lesser weight, the hatch isn't as
quick as the D-segment sedan. Of course, the gearing also plays its part.

Toyota Etios Liva -Same engine as the Corolla, the 1.4-litre is tuned
for returning better economy

20
A Study on Maruti Suzuki Cars and Comparison of Maruti Suzuki Cars with
other Companies Cars

Getting back to the Swift, its interiors, again, are class leading. Like
the Liva, the ergonomics are great. And like the Punto, there‟s good
equipment too from steering mounted controls to a digital climate
control system to a trip computer. But additionally, the Swift interiors
feel the most upmarket. The quality of plastics is perceivably better, so
are the design and operability of switches all round. It‟s also the most
comfortable when it comes to front seating, but yes, space can be an
issue at the rear, as can getting in and out for some.

Scorecard & Verdict: Fiat Grande Punto vs Maruti Suzuki Swift

vs Toyota Etios Liva
Scorecard
Body: The Liva scores the highest under this head courtesy
enormous space at the back compared to the other two cars. It has more
knee as well as shoulder room. The Liva also has the clearest visibility
but loses out on quality. The S wift is only two points behind and scores
the highest for quality.
Drive: With the quickest acceleration time and the highest fuel
efficiency, the Swift leads the Drive head by three points ahead of the
Liva. The Toyota is behind on account of poorer fuel economy, but it's
the Fiat that really suffers because of the latter, and of course, an
average shifting gearbox.
Comfort: With Bluetooth and a comprehensive trip computer among
other equipment missing on the other two cars, the Punto scores the
highest here. Having the most sorted ride quality helps too. Wish it
had better ergonomics though, particularly the positioning of pedals
Dynamics: It's a tie here and honestly, both cars the Swift and the
Punto are great fun to drive around a winding road. The Swift a tad
more so, thanks to its engine. But, the Punto has better steering feel
and response and, as the S corecard indicates, better braking too.

21
A Study on Maruti Suzuki Cars and Comparison of Maruti Suzuki Cars with
other Companies Cars

Cost: The Liva is the cheapest to buy. And rightly so, it's the least
equipped. But, it also comes with the best warranty and being a Toyota,
resale isn't bad either. However, the Swift's overall abilities are too much
for the Liva to overcome.

Verdict
The Scorecard has spoken. And according to it, there‟s no better find
than the Swift, even when it comes to diesel power; at least in this
selection of cars.

Not only is the Swift fun to drive, quick and fuel efficient, it scores well
on quality and practicality (barring the small boot) as well. Plus, it has
a huge service network and good resale.

Admittedly, it's more expensive than the Liva, but then, as is clear
from this test, that‟s justified. The Liva finishes second and it's clear,
even though it is the most cost effective purchase here, it's still not the
best value-for-money buy.

With better equipment, and improvement in quality and operability, it

would certainly make a better case for itself; possibly good enough to
challenge for the win as well.

The Fiat meanwhile needs more space, better ergonomics and a gruntier
engine. As of now though, go ahead and buy the Swift.

A new challenger. Maruti has been ruling the entry level sedan roost
with the Dzire, while Mahindra's Logan and Hyundai's Accent have
been doing reasonably well too. But, a new Toyota has been drawing
the crowds lately. So, is the Etios really better? We find out

The world is inclining towards emerging markets, such as India, and

that has resulted in the birth of a whole new range of cars. These are
specifically made for local conditions; for local tastes and needs. And
customers are loving this new attention.

In the past, we have seen how Maruti Suzuki used the Swift. and
morphed it into the Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire. post a boot surgery.
This particular car is exclusive to this part of the world and the Indian
public received it with open arms.So much so that many of the people
who desired a Dzire are still waiting for their cars to be delivered.

Speaking of waiting periods, it is Toyota's Etios that has set a new

benchmark in this regard. An insane eight month waiting period is the

23
A Study on Maruti Suzuki Cars and Comparison of Maruti Suzuki Cars with
other Companies Cars

current norm. Numerous bookings were made even when most

interested parties hadn't even seen the vehicle since most showrooms
didn't even have a demo vehicle. This was mainly because of the
Toyota brand name on which most Indians confer blind faith.

Like the Maruti Suzuki Swift, the Etios too has been designed with
India in mind and Yoshinori Noritake, chief engineer, Toyota, had a
massive challenge to keep costs down while at the same time
producing a satisfying product.

To achieve this the development team undertook numerous customer

clinics to find out what the Indian buyer wanted. The team drove all
across the country to experience the varied terrain and the equally
varied climate.

So, it's not surprising that the Etios'design is more a case of form
following function. But unlike the Maruti the Toyota will be sold else
where as well. Nevertheless India is the first market to see it.

Exterior & Interior: Accent VS Etios VS Logan VS Swift Dzire

Interiors are bare basic with limited equipment on board.

24
A Study on Maruti Suzuki Cars and Comparison of Maruti Suzuki Cars with
other Companies Cars

The Accent Looks proportionate and the 172mm ground clearance is

adequate
But, our job here remains to fi nd out which of these petrol powered
cars you should put your money down on.

THE Hyundai is the oldest car in this lot and yet it looks quite alright.
The best part is that since it was designed at a time when the European
Safety norms where not so stringent, the designers came out with a
well proportioned styling. So the boot doesn't look like an add-on job.

However the design has its drawbacks. The ingress/egress is not easy,
thanks to the low roof line and seating. Slide into the car and the first
thing you will miss is the amount of space. It's a tight fit especially for
the rearoccupants.

25
A Study on Maruti Suzuki Cars and Comparison of Maruti Suzuki Cars with
other Companies Cars

Quality of plastics too are not up to the mark and the instrumentation
looks childish.

The newest kid on the block doesn't look like its the newest of them at
all
For the driver the good news is that all round visibility is very good.
The bonnet too doesn't slope down and one has good view of all four
corners.

The interiors, while basic, look bright thanks to the beige colour scheme.
The little wood trim on the console and instrument binnacle look good
as well.

However one does miss most modern amenities like climate control,
stereo, steering mounted controls and safety features like ABS and
airbags. However a split 60:40 rear seat does add to the versatility of
this sedan.

Start up the Accent and the 1.4-litre petrol engine springs to life
before settling down smoothly. The gearbox offers a positive feel and the
clutch too is light enough for easy city use.

On the move we were surprised that this old competitor could keep up
with the modern motors pretty well. And if you look at the
performance tables you will know that this is no slow coach either.

26
A Study on Maruti Suzuki Cars and Comparison of Maruti Suzuki Cars with
other Companies Cars

The Accent does have a stiffer suspension setting than the others here
and as a result offers good ride over a variety of surfaces.

Moreover, although it does look like a pretty low car, the 172mm ground
clearance seems to be enough as it never touches anything underneath.

The steering is reasonably direct but throwing it around corners can

be good fun.

Options are limited and switches don't feel right.

The design of the Logan belongs to days gone by but there's loads of
space inside.
THE Logan was never built to participate in beauty contests, but to be
a low cost offering in most markets. So we are not taken aback by its
boxy looks.

27
A Study on Maruti Suzuki Cars and Comparison of Maruti Suzuki Cars with
other Companies Cars

However even in its form, the Logan seems to have been the
inspiration for the much younger Toyota Etios.

While externally there's little to write about, it is the interiors which

are its USP. Make no mistake, it surely isn't draped in Nappa leather,
but what it does have is space and acres of it.

The rear bench is adequate for three and this makes it a fi ve-seater
car in which fi ve can actually travel comfortably. The rear seat also has
three headrests but that can hinder rear visibility.

It also looks plasticky all round and the quality of plastics too needed to
be better. The instrument panel looks a tad drab, but it does have a very
comprehensive trip computer.

However the Logan fights back with its fantastic ride quality. The
suspension absorbs undulations like nobody's business. Sure at slow
speeds it does transmit undulations a bit into the cabin, butonce
cruising, it's very comfy.

Looking at this, one must admit that at high speeds (which you get to
eventually), the Logan stays planted on the road which is confi dence
inspiring.

It handles well too, at least for a car in this class. The ground
clearance too is adequate and even with a full load, there's no
problem.

MARUTI SUZUKI'S in-house development led to the birth of the Swift

Dzire. Up front it looks like the Swift, albeit with a new grille and fog
lamps but as you move towards the rear, it all starts getting rather

28
A Study on Maruti Suzuki Cars and Comparison of Maruti Suzuki Cars with
other Companies Cars

mismatched. The boot looks like an add-on job gone wrong although it
does offer a fair bit of cargo space.

Loads of equipment available on the ZXI version.

The Dzire offers the best feel of quality and fun factor in this quartet.
Inside, the Dzire though looks the best amongst the four cars. The
grained plastics look good and although it is an all black affair inside,
the Dzire sure does delight.

On the top-of-the-line ZXI version, it also offers steering mounted

controls which fall into your hands easily. Climate control too is on
the option list (none of the others offer this feature) and this makes
the Dzire a ratherwell spec-ed offering.

It also gets ABS and airbags as standard in this variant. However

apart from these offerings, the Dzire loses out on space. Even at the
rear, there's limited space and with three on board the situation gets
even more cramped.

29
A Study on Maruti Suzuki Cars and Comparison of Maruti Suzuki Cars with
other Companies Cars

The rear seats are wee bit more slanted than in the Swift and this makes
it marginally more comfortable to be on than in the latter.

THE Etios is a classic case of 'form following function.' And that's clearly
evident in its design. It has a smiling front and a large rear end,
which makes it look some what like a modern Logan.

However look inside and you will find it is very spacious. Lift the bonnet
orboot, open the doors and you will find them to be feather weight.

This is primarily because overall the car weighs just 930kg and that's
lighter than most hatchbacks. There also seems to be cost cutting as
far as painting goes.

Under the bonnet, inside the engine bay orthe boot lid, Toyota has not
bothered to paint it. So paint primer is visible in all these areas.

Open the door and the Etios pretends to be a rock star inside. Red
and black upholstery screams at you with attitude. The asymmetric
vents on the dash look different and Toyota says they are there for better
cooling for rear passengers.

We don't disagree. The centrally positioned instrument binnacle is

perhaps one of a kind. Not the position but the instruments as the
lettering isstickered on to the panel and perhaps is the worst bit on
the car.

The steering though is good fun as it is fl at bottomed and feels good

to hold and turn. Adding to it are the controls for the audio mounted on
it.

30
A Study on Maruti Suzuki Cars and Comparison of Maruti Suzuki Cars with
other Companies Cars

The seats are thin but there's loads of space up front. At the back, the
seats lack support and the front end of the seat squab folds under the
occupant's weight. But space again is top notch.

Engine & Gearbox: Accent VS Etios VS Logan VS Swift Dzire

Honda Civic The 1.4 motor offers 95bhp but could be more refined.
The third contender is the Mahindra Logan, but with a 1.4- litre petrol
engine as the 1.6-litre engine has been discontinued.

Our final contender is the Hyundai Accent. Surprised? Don't be as

this car is still racking up respectable numbers. In spite of being offered
in just one variant, its affordable price is still luring people. One
must note, that the Logan and the Accent are also available with the
option of alternative fuels.

31
A Study on Maruti Suzuki Cars and Comparison of Maruti Suzuki Cars with
other Companies Cars

Toyota Etios Engine though is lovely; quick and very driveable.

The 1.5-litre engine is its best bit. It offers superb and linear power
delivery. Add to it the lack of weight and it's not surprising to see why
it's so quick.

It also requires fewer gear changes; just dab the throttle and no
matter which gear you are in, the Etios will pull through. The gearbox
is light and easy to use too. The Etios also rides well and this gets better
with speed. The steering, though light to use, lacks any kind of
feedback.

Mahindra-Renault Logan Engine feels underpowered.

As far as the petrol options go, the Logan was earlier available with a
choice of either a 1.6 or a 1.4. However the 1.4 is the only one on sale
today.

Now this engine offers 75bhp and that's pretty low for a car this big.
On our acceleration runs, the Logan took a yawn inducing 17.1 seconds
to hit 100kmph.

This also translates into the fact that the Logan is as slow in normal
driving conditions. Soa quick overtaking manoeuvre can only be

32
A Study on Maruti Suzuki Cars and Comparison of Maruti Suzuki Cars with
other Companies Cars

undertaken after a downshift. It isso slow that sometimes it gets

rather irritating to drive.

Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire Perky new K-series loves to keep the rev
needle near the redline of the tachometer.
Maruti Suzuki has recently started offering the Dzire with the new
generation K-series 1.2-litre petrol engine. This motor is a perky little
thing and loves to be revved.

So on the move, you will have loads of fun shifting at high revs. However
at the low range of the revcounter, the Dzire does feel a bit sluggish and
that means downshifting is required to gain momentum quickly.

The gearbox feels notchy but is fun to slot in. The Dzire also runs a
soft suspension setup, especially at the rear. So,while low speed
undulations are taken care off well, as speeds increase, the car tends
to crash into potholes.

This is the same reason that the Dzire feels twitchy whilst negotiating
corners. The steering, in true Maruti style, is quick but mute at the same
time.

Scorecard & Verdict: Accent VS Etios VS Logan VS Swift

Dzire

Scorecard
Body: If space is what you want, it is the Etios you should head for.
Apart from a spacious cabin it gets a generous boot too. However as
far as finish is concerned, it is the Dzire which looks the best. Safety
features too are at par with what the Etios offers.
Drive: The Etios is the quickest of the lot and also has the highest top
speed. However the surprise of all is the Accent, which is as quick as
the Dzire. However hands down the winner is the Etios as far as drive
ability goes. The Dzire though is the most effi cient.
Comfort: The Logan boasts the best ride, followed by the Etios. The
Dzire with its soft set up isn't as good. However the Dzire does scores
high for comfort equipment and operability. The Dzire is also the
quietest of the lot on this test.
Dynamics: The quick steering of the Dzire scores the most. The
Etios' steering is light but is absolutely lifeless as well. Nonetheless
the Etios feels planted. The Etios and the Dzire are the ones to offer ABS
while the rest do without this safety feature.
Cost: The Dzire has the advantage here. Not only is it the cheap but it
also offers loads of equipment at that price. Resale value too is top
notch. However spoiling its broth is warranty.

Verdict
The Etios is surely the best of the lot but don't think you will get the
finesse seen in its larger more expensive siblings like the Corolla Altis
and Camry. It is a Toyota alright, but built on a budget and it looks and
feels so. Space is one of its USPs. However the trump card is the engine
which offers superb driveability and good fuel economy. Ride

quality too is very good. However don't forget that till Toyota sorts out
production capacities, the waiting period will be long.

Comparison Test: Hyundai i10 vs Maruti Suzuki Wagon R

Looking for a car with high seating and good visibility to make city
commute less tiring? Here are two popular options – the i10 and the
new WagonR. We find out which high chair should you sit on
If it‟s affordable high seating you seek, two cars top the list – the ever
popular WagonR and the well-rounded and received i10.

Till a couple of months back, it would be thelatter we‟d suggest you

buy without even batting an eyelid. The Hyundai was, after all, a
newer, better engineered and practical option. That, however, might
change with the latest iteration of the WagonR.

35
A Study on Maruti Suzuki Cars and Comparison of Maruti Suzuki Cars with
other Companies Cars

Interiors well put together, but lack comfort and safety equipment.
Clocks are easy to read

i10 too feels comfortable at speeds and as an added benefit, it also

handles well
The new WagonR, contrary to popular opinion, is not a mere facelift.
Sure, it might look like the old car with a new set of headlamps and
bumpers at fi rst glance, but it is in fact, two generations ahead of the
car it replaces. It‟s much bigger and doesn‟t share a single panel on
the outside with the old car.

Inside too, it‟s brand new. And in fact now comes across as a more
upmarket and modern car. It‟s also more spacious. But the i10 is still
the roomier of the two cars on test here.

It offers more shoulder room both front and back, and has more knee
room at the rear too. Head room of course, is the WagonR‟s strong
point and should be a boon for really tall adults. As far as seating
goes, both cars are equally comfortable at the front.

But, the Maruti, thanks to its more supportive seats, is more relaxing
to be in at the back. The seats support the passenger's thigh better in
particular.

36
A Study on Maruti Suzuki Cars and Comparison of Maruti Suzuki Cars with
other Companies Cars

The i10 also behaves like a bigger, better engineered car on the road. Its
ride quality, though a tad firmer than the WagonR, is still better suited
for the bouquet of India roads; pot holes, undulations, speed breakers
and road joints of all sizes are dealt with more composure than the
Maruti.

Insides look a lot more modern than the i10. Quality though is not as
good

Straight line stability is good but it's too soft to handle quick direction
changes
Not that the WagonR‟s ride is bad, especially for a small city car. But,
it is at its best when the going is slow and the road irregularities, more
discreet. Over larger pot holes, it does tend to crash into them.

But, at least with Maruti having resolved the problem of limited

suspension travel as on the older WagonR, it manages the bigger bumps
with more confidence.

37
A Study on Maruti Suzuki Cars and Comparison of Maruti Suzuki Cars with
other Companies Cars

Moreover, like the i10, the Maruti‟s steering and clutch are light to use
and the visibility is pretty good too. The WagonR additionally has a
smaller turning circle which further improves its manoeuvrability.

The Hyundai too is pretty stable at speeds. But it‟s a lot more stable
around bends. You can‟t chuck it very hard into corners without it
losing its footing, but unlike the WagonR it‟s more forgiving.

The i10 has a better steering too, one that‟s quicker and offers more
feedback and as a result makes the Hyundai a more involving car to
drive.

Engine & Gearbox: Hyundai i10 vs Maruti Suzuki Wagon R

Hyundai i10 -i10's engine compared to the WagonR's is an older unit.

It's not too fuel efficient either
The WagonR also offers more equipment in the Vxi trim compared to the
top-of-line 1.1-litre engined i10. The i10 Magna has no stereo, no
electric ORVMs and no fog lamps.

The Maruti, on the other hand, has all of this. And the stereo
especially is a delight as it plays everything from CDs to MP3s and

38
A Study on Maruti Suzuki Cars and Comparison of Maruti Suzuki Cars with
other Companies Cars

even comes with an AUX input. There's also a provision to play via a
USB stick. Moreover, the WagonR comes with the option of going in
for ABS and driver and passenger side airbags in the Vxi trim.

Quality though is still better on the Hyundai. It has closer shut lines
on the outside and better fit and finish inside. The quality 13.8kmplof
plastics used for the dash as well as the various controls, feel sturdier
and look richer.

Maruti Suzuki Wagon R -Engine is very efficient

Practical and ideal the WagonR might be for city use, but it‟s not as
much fun to drive as the i10. The Maruti has a good engine and the
gearbox shift quality is acceptable too.

But, throw it hard around a corner and the car squats on its outer
rear wheel quite uncomfortably. But at least, the straight line stability
has improved and even at its top speed of 140kmph, it never felt
scary.

The engine under the hood of our test car is the old 1.1-litre unit that
has been used on the Santro for ages (albeit with a few tweaks). Even
so, it helps the i10 post better acceleration as well as roll on times.

39
A Study on Maruti Suzuki Cars and Comparison of Maruti Suzuki Cars with
other Companies Cars

The gearbox, the engine is coupled to is way better as the shifter is

ideally located and the shifts themselves are precise. The throws are also
short and it further enhances the sporty feel compared to the new
WagonR.

Scorecard & Verdict: Hyundai i10 vs Maruti Suzuki Wagon R

Scorecard
Body: As far as the space is concerned both the cars are well
matched, though its the i10 that has more of it at the back. The i10 also
has more boot space. The Hyundai is ahead of the WagonR when in
comes to the build quality, especially the plastics in the cabin. The i10
does lack safety equipment in the Magna trim on test here. In the end
its an even contest here.

Drive: Both cars here are city centric and come with tiny
powerplants, and score equally in the top speed stakes and acceleration.
The gearbox on the Hyundai is better than the Maruti; the shifts are
slicker and throws shorter. The older engine on the i10 lets it down in
the fuel efficiency department. The newer generation K
10B in the WagonR is more efficient.

Comfort: Ride on both the cars is decent. The i10 feels better sorted
at both low and high speeds and soaks the road irregularities better.
The WagonR feels good at low speeds only. The Korean also handles
better. The Japanese though pulls it back when it comes to
equipment, it gets a CD/MP3 player along with a USB input.

Dynamics: The i10 is the better driver's car in this comparison. The
steering has more feedback and it also feels more planted at high
speeds. The WagonR scores more when it comes to braking thanks to

40
A Study on Maruti Suzuki Cars and Comparison of Maruti Suzuki Cars with
other Companies Cars

ABS. It is more maneuverable and also has a smaller turning circle here.

Cost: The Hyundai costs less to buy, but then its not well equipped.
You will get a better return on the WagonR, a Maruti commanding a
better resale. Although its the i10 that gets a better warranty for your
money. In the end the i10 loses by a small margin to the new WagonR.

Verdict
The i10 is better built and finished. It is roomier and more fun to
drive. So why does it lose? Simply because the WagonR offers a lot more
for your money. It has more comfort and safety equipment, a more
intelligent cabin and it's much easier to drive and park.

The Wagon is more comfortable to get in and out of and to top it all, it
also returns better fuel economy. Buy the WagonR if it's a small city
runabout you need.

The looks Getting back to the agenda at hand, if style is your priority,
it doesn‟t get better than the Beat. It is undoubtedly miles ahead of
the other two as far as looks go.

With its large headlamps, prominent design lines, and the big and
smartly turned out front grille, it leaves the other two looking old, the
Figo especially. Inside too, the Chevy‟s lines are better executed and it
carries forward an air of raciness from its exteriors.

We also loved the motorcycle type instrumentation which moves along

with the steering column when the latter is adjusted for rake.

Interior quality is par for the course.

Small car with big car space and dynamics, the Figo is the one to buy
if you enjoy driving. Wish its engine had the go exhibited by the other
two

44
A Study on Maruti Suzuki Cars and Comparison of Maruti Suzuki Cars with
other Companies Cars

The Beat doesn‟t feel very spacious however, particularly from the
driver‟s seat courtesy the proximity of the dash and the
instrumentation.

It gets accentuated after stepping out of the Figo. Ford, by the way,
has done a superb job in terms of space utilisation with its small car.
The Figo has the most shoulder and knee room and it isn‟t short on
headroom either even though the Ritz offers more given it‟s a tall boy.

Luggage space again is better on the Figo, and it‟s pretty usable too.
Once seated, the Figo continues to impress. It has a set of comfortable
seats both front and back and the visibility all round thanks to the
large glass area which is much better as well.

But, it isn‟t the easiest to get in and out of as it is low slung. That
honour belongs to the Ritz.

Steering mounted controls exclusive on the Ritz

45
A Study on Maruti Suzuki Cars and Comparison of Maruti Suzuki Cars with
other Companies Cars

Not the most involving to drive on twisties thanks to the Ritz's muted
steering. But it has a great engine and gearbox

The Maruti also has the most equipment here. The Beat‟s list is nearly
as good, but it misses out on steering mounted controls. The Figo on
the other hand lacks in a number of areas.

It only gets power windows at the front, a non-adjustable steering and

no alloy wheels either. Crucially, it does get a stereo along besides driver
and passenger airbags and ABS like on the other two, nevertheless.

The biggest plus for the Maruti Suzuki though is its fuel economy. It is
phenomenally more fuel efficient than either of the other two cars in
this test, especially when you look at the kind of performance the Maruti
also Packs in.

Engine & Gearbox: Chevrolet Beat vs Ford Figo vs Maruti

Suzuki Ritz

46
A Study on Maruti Suzuki Cars and Comparison of Maruti Suzuki Cars with
other Companies Cars

Chevrolet Beat -Beat engine is perky but sounds coarse in

comparison to the other two
On the powertrain front, all three cars use 4-cylinder 1.2-litre engines
coupled to 5-speed manual gearboxes. But the character of the three
could not be more different.

The ford which uses a scaled down unit of the Fiesta‟s earlier 1.4-litre
Duratec engine,is the most refined and easy revving unit here. It also
has the slickest and easiest to use gearbox here, and feels sporty too.
But,the Figo still isn‟t our pick.

Ford Figo -Refined, free revving engine on the Figo does need more
grunt though.

47
A Study on Maruti Suzuki Cars and Comparison of Maruti Suzuki Cars with
other Companies Cars

To begin with it just doesn‟t have enough go (it‟s over two eco and
slower than both the Beat and the Ritz in the run up to 100kmph).
Moreover, we would have liked to see slightly shorter gearing for the
lower gears, in particular.

The Ford engine only begins to come into its own past 2000rpm and
with the current gearing, every time you upshiftthe engine revs drop
below this mark (unless you rev it high in each gear),leaving the
engine feeling sluggish. And if you revit high, naturally, the car's fuel
economy takes a beating.

The Beat on the other handwith more power and torque and better
gearing compared to the Ford, motors ahead with a lot more vigour.

In fact,it is the quickest from standstill to 100kmph and records the

best roll-on times as well. Sadly, its engine begins to sound gruff past
3000rpm and it gets vibey too.

The gearbox isn‟t great either; actually it is the worst in terms of shift
quality, in this test.

Maruti Suzuki Ritz -Ritz's engine is our pick; it performs well and is
very fuel effi cient indeed.

48
A Study on Maruti Suzuki Cars and Comparison of Maruti Suzuki Cars with
other Companies Cars

The Ritz then has the best powertrain. Its engine has the most power
and torque figures and though the K-series unit isn‟t as refined as the
Ford‟s Duratec, it is still rev happy.

The driveability is decent and with a shortthrow and precise gearshift,

it‟s quite comfortable for townuse. The shift quality though remains a
tad notchy.

Scorecard & Verdict: Chevrolet Beat vs Ford Figo vs Maruti

Suzuki Ritz
Scorecard
Body: The Ritz manages to score higher for front room because it
offers more elbow room and headroom. But the Figo liberates more
usable space front and back and has the biggest boot too. Visibility
too is fantastic on the Figo and with a few additional safety features it
leads under this head.
Drive: The Beat is the quickest and most driveable car here with the
Figo bringing up the tail on both counts. But the Ritz's above average
performanceand brilliant fuel economy see it lead the charts under the
Drive head. It also manages the highest top speed of the three cars here.
Comfort: The Figo is easily the most comfortable small car you can
buy. Not only does it offer a supple and sorted ride, it also out-handles
the Beat and the Ritz. It does lose out on comfort equipment though,
thanks to the lack of rear power windows and steering rake adjust.
Dynamics: The Figo leads the charge here as well. It has the best
steering of the lot it's both quick and alive. It's also the most stable in
a straight line and, thanks to its visibility, quite manoeuvrable too.
The Beat isn't far behind in these areas.
Cost: This is where things begin to go wrong for the Ritz. It is the
most expensive to buy and comes with the least warranty too. But

49
A Study on Maruti Suzuki Cars and Comparison of Maruti Suzuki Cars with
other Companies Cars

because the car holds its value well in the secondhand car market, it
manages to score well on resale.

Verdict
The Ford Figo is our new petrol small car champion. It boasts of better
dynamics, better ride and more passenger and luggage room than its
competitors.

It might be a little short on comfort equipment, but it does get handy

safety bits like emergency braking warning and one touch lane change
indication.

It‟s also the easiest to drive, thanks to the light steering, the light
clutch operation and effortless gear shift quality, something most
small car owners will love during their everyday city commute.

It could do with a more powerful engine, however. This is the one area
where it is found lacking compared to the competition at hand.

Interiors are funky and the silver accents help liven up the black

dashboard with colour coordinated door rims and the like make it
seem more alive. The i10 too uses a two-tone interior, but the choice
of brown and beige doesn‟t do much for its wellness in the Ritz‟s
company even though it does make the insides look roomy.

The Beat with its black insides and chunky A- and C-pillars feels the
gloomiest. Also the choice of plastics leaves a little to be desired. Not
so on the practicality front; the Chevy has the most number of
cup/bottle holders, intelligent stowage spaces and of course, split rear
seats that actually fold flat and therefore offer class leading luggage
loading flexibility. Boot space though isn't great.

i10 has the best built interiors in this test

The attention to detail on the Beat however is great. The climate

control system, for instance, is fantastic.

52
A Study on Maruti Suzuki Cars and Comparison of Maruti Suzuki Cars with

Being the only car hereto offer one is good enough, but then it tops it up
with an easy to read and stylish display for the digital readout. We also
love the motorcycle type instrumentation which moves up and down
along with the steering column.

We don‟t mind the looks of the stereo either but would have preferred
better sound quality. We would have also liked steering mounted
controls and a one-touch auto up/down function for the driver side
window, both of which are present on the Ritz.

When it gets down to owning one of these small cars, the majority would
be driving these cars themselves. Needless to say, the cars then need to
have light controls, good visibility, comfortable seats and a tight
turning circle for both ease of driving in the city and for parking.

Unfortunately none of our protagonists are masters of all. The Beat

has light controls including the steering which is both light to operate
and decently direct that makes parking and slow speed lane changes
easy.

It also has a light clutch but then the gearshifts require some effort as
the shift quality is both vague and notchy. The Chevy‟s biggest
downsides are its seats and visibility.

The former are a tad small and lack the right thigh support while the
Beat‟s chunky A-pillars and a high dashboard, not to mention limited
rear visibility, can cause some problems while negotiating through
traffic.

53
A Study on Maruti Suzuki Cars and Comparison of Maruti Suzuki Cars with
other Companies Cars

The Ritz has the best looking insides with a black, blue and silver
combo. The fi t and fi nish isn't bad either and is comparable to the
i10

The i10 does well on these counts. The view over the hood and via the
A-pillar is clear and so is the rear visibility. It has great seats too.
These are a tad fi rm but support is of high order.

It also has a superb gearshift. In fact it is the best among small cars;
it‟s precise, has a short throw and one that doesn‟t require much
effort to slot in.

Shift quality on the Ritz isn‟t bad either, even though it is

comparatively notchier than the Hyundai. But it isn‟t as easy to drive.

Visibility isn‟t as good, and the controls, particularly the steering and
the clutch in comparison are heavier to use. Otherwise, the Ritz is a

54
A Study on Maruti Suzuki Cars and Comparison of Maruti Suzuki Cars with
other Companies Cars

pretty easy car to live with. The controls might be heavy, but their
operability as well as reach is one of the best. It also has the best
seats in the house, both front and back.

Engine & Gearbox: Chevrolet Beat vs Hyundai i10 vs Maruti

Suzuki Ritz

Chevrolet Beat
If chic looks is your be and end all condition for buying a car, you might
have already set your sights on the Beat. It looks stunning for a small
car, especially in the flesh.

The tall front, the large headlamps and a yawning two-piece grille
along with the Ritz's 1.2-litre K12M engine is an all-aluminium unit
which is light, very efficient and rev happy.

The latter is also courtesy its oversquare dimensions. The Chevy's S- tec
II is a new engine as well, but uses an aluminium head and a cast iron
block. It's comparatively less refined but has a throatier note.

The i10's Kappa, like the Suzuki's, is more refined and is the peppiest
engine here. It isn't as efficient how ever Sloping down roof line and
pronounced lines for the shoulder and the door sill give it a lovely
blend of cuteness and raciness which puts the desirability of the Beat
at a different level altogether compared to the Ritz and the i10.

55
A Study on Maruti Suzuki Cars and Comparison of Maruti Suzuki Cars with
other Companies Cars

To add to the roomy and supportive seats, the Ritz‟s ride quality is
another important facet which makes it a comfortable car to spend time
in.

The suspension is on the firm side, but along with adequate travel, it
gives the car a pliant ride, especially at speeds of about 60kmph and
over. At slower speeds, there‟s a bit of shudder that creeps in, though.

Hyundai i10
The Beat with its softer ride quality feels plusher at slower speeds as it
goes about absorbing everything from road joints to bumps to even
potholes with authority.

But the chinks in the setup begin to show as the speeds climb. It
tends to crash into potholes and the rear in particular fails to keep touch
with the changing road surface, leaving the car feeling skittish.

The ride can also get irritatingly noisy. Overall then, the Beat doesn‟t
score very well on ride quality.

56
A Study on Maruti Suzuki Cars and Comparison of Maruti Suzuki Cars with
other Companies Cars

The i10‟s ride is better; it is firm at slower speeds but manages to iron
out irregularities better at higher speeds. However, it still can‟t match
the Ritz for sheer pliancy, no matter the speed or load.

Maruti Suzuki Ritz

The Maruti also has one of the better engines in this test. Actually, it‟s
a close call betweenthe i10‟s Kappa and the Ritz‟s Kseries engines, but
the latter is a lot more fuel efficient.

What‟s clear though, is that the STec II under the Beat‟s hood is no
match for either. It sounds a tad gruff in comparison. The Chevy's
engine is also not as free revving as the Maruti's and the Hyundai's
and flattens out sooner at thetop as well.

Add to it the shorter gearing, and the Beat gets left behind quite
sizably in the top speed stakes.

However, the shorter gearing has its pros. The Beat manages to post a
quicker 0-100kmph run than the Ritz eventhough it is slightly slower
than the i10.

57
A Study on Maruti Suzuki Cars and Comparison of Maruti Suzuki Cars with
other Companies Cars

It also manages better roll-on times (a measure of a car‟s driveability)

than both the Ritz and the i10.

Scorecard & Verdict: Chevrolet Beat vs Hyundai i10 vs Maruti

Suzuki Ritz
Scorecard
Body: The Ritz manages to score higher for front room for two main
reasons – one, it offers more shoulder and elbow room and thanks to
its tall boy design, it also offers the most head room. Two, in terms of
boot space, a narrow loading area for the Beat mars it's otherwise fl
exible luggage room.
Drive: Taller gearing and more go at the top sees the Ritz register the
highest top speed. Its drivetrain is also the most effi cient both in the
city and out on the highways and the economy really seals the deal for
the Ritz under this head. Between the Beat and the i10, the latter is
more efficient.
Comfort: Like the Spark, the Beat too suffers from poor seats. These
are small and lack support, particularly at the front. It's ride quality,
though good at slow speeds, gets unsettled as speeds rise more than
the others. It scores high for operability thanks to better ergonomics.
Dynamics: One would expect a good handling car to have good
steering response too. Not so with the Ritz. It has the most artifi cial
feeling and heavy-to-use steering here. But the i10, with good braking
and manoeuvrability, steals the show here.
Cost: The Beat does offset its disadvantage in the above sections
under cost. It is significantly cheaper to buy and is equally well
equipped. It comes with the best warranty and service package of the
lot. Sadly, it still can't beat the Ritz, overall.

58
A Study on Maruti Suzuki Cars and Comparison of Maruti Suzuki Cars with
other Companies Cars

Verdict
The Ritz retains its crown as the best small car. Sure, it is more
expensive to buy than the Beat, besides having only an average
warranty. But then it‟s also a better car.

However, if you aren‟t a Maruti Suzuki fan, the Beat is your next best
option. And it is a good buy too. The Beat looks nice, has a practical
cabin, is reasonably roomy and the ride and handling compromise
though not as good as the Maruti's, is still pretty acceptable.

The i10 fi nishes third and loses out to the Beat because of its
comparatively steeper pricing.

A Study on Maruti Suzuki Cars and Comparison of Maruti Suzuki Cars with

Maruti Suzuki is one of India's leading automobile

manufacturers and the market leader in the car segment, both in

terms of volume of vehicles sold and revenue earned. Until recently,

18.28% of the company was owned by the Indian government, and

54.2% by Suzuki of Japan.

The Indian government held an initial public offering of 25% of the

company in June 2003. As of May 10, 2007, Govt. of India sold its

complete share to Indian financial institutions. With this, Govt. of

India no longer has stake in Maruti Udyog.

Maruti Udyog Limited (MUL) was established in February

1981, though the actual production commenced in 1983 with the

Maruti 800, based on the Suzuki Alto kei car which at the time

was the only modern car available in India, its' only competitors- the

Hindustan Ambassador and Premier Padmini were both around

25 years out of date at that point.

Through 2004, Maruti has produced over 5 Million vehicles.

Marutis are sold in India and various several other countries,

depending upon export orders. Cars similar to Marutis (but not

manufactured by Maruti Udyog) are sold by Suzuki and

manufactured in Pakistan and other South Asian countries.

The company annually exports more than 50,000 cars and

has an extremely large domestic market in India selling over

730,000 cars annually. Maruti 800, till 2004, was the India's

largest selling compact car ever since it was launched in 1983.

61
A Study on Maruti Suzuki Cars and Comparison of Maruti Suzuki Cars with
other Companies Cars

More than a million units of this car have been sold worldwide

so far. Currently, Maruti Alto tops the sales charts and Maruti Swift

is the largest selling in A2 segment.

Due to the large number of Maruti 800s sold in the Indian

market, the term "Maruti" is commonly used to refer to this compact car

model. Till recently the term "Maruti", in popular Indian culture, was

associated to the Maruti 800 model.

Maruti Suzuki India Limited, a subsidiary of Suzuki Motor

Corporation of Japan, has been the leader of the Indian car market for

over two decades.

It‟s manufacturing facilities are located at two facilities Gurgaon

and Manesar south of New Delhi. Maruti‟s Gurgaon facility has an

installed capacity of 350,000 units per annum.

The Manesar facilities, launched in February 2007 comprise a

vehicle assembly plant with a capacity of 100,000 units per year and a

Diesel Engine plant with an annual capacity of 100,000 engines and

transmissions. Manesar and Gurgaon facilities have a combined

capability to produce over 700,000 units annually.

More than half the cars sold in India are Maruti cars. The

company is a subsidiary of Suzuki Motor Corporation, Japan, which

owns 54.2 per cent of Maruti.

62
A Study on Maruti Suzuki Cars and Comparison of Maruti Suzuki Cars with
other Companies Cars

The rest is owned by the public and financial institutions. It is

listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange and National Stock Exchange in

India.

During 2007-08, Maruti Suzuki sold 764,842 cars, of which

53,024 were exported. In all, over six million Maruti cars are on Indian

roads since the first car was rolled out on December 14, 1983.

Maruti Suzuki offers 13 models, Maruti 800, Omni, Alto, Versa,

Ritz, Gypsy, A Star, Wagon R, Zen Estilo, Ritz, Swift, Swift Dzire, SX4,

Grand Vitara. Swift, Swift dzire, A star and SX4 are maufactured in

Manesar, Grand Vitara is imported from Japan as a completely built

unit (CBU), remaining all models are manufactured in Maruti Suzuki's

Gurgaon Plant.

Suzuki Motor Corporation, the parent company, is a global

leader in mini and compact cars for three decades. Suzuki‟s technical

superiority lies in its ability to pack power and performance into a

compact, lightweight engine that is clean and fuel efficient.

Maruti is clearly an “employer of choice” for automotive

engineers and young managers from across the country. Nearly

75,000 people are employed directly by Maruti and its partners.

The company vouches for customer satisfaction. For its sincere

efforts it has been rated (by customers)first in customer satisfaction

among all car makers in India for nine years in a row in annual survey

by J D Power Asia Pacific.

85
A Study on Maruti Suzuki Cars and Comparison of Maruti Suzuki Cars with
other Companies Cars

Naturally then, Maruti had to do something and out came the Alto K10. It had a better
engine, more equipment and overall a more upmarket positioning. It was the car for
the young.

It’s not taken over the mantle from the standard Alto yet; something the second
largest car maker Hyundai thinks its latest can. Say hello to the Eon; a properly good
looking car that promises to check everything we said about the Alto in the opening
statement. So, Heir apparents Pictures: Suresh Narayanan does it? And does it do it
better than the K10?

On the K10 everything seems a tad too close. Plus, the plastics look cheap and the
design takes you back a decade, if not more. Fit and finish though is acceptable

The soft setup, as it's said, can only take you so far. So, it's not surprising that the Eon
feels more out of shape and less stable compared to the K10 on the same section of
road at speeds of over 80kmph.

In fact, the sense of speed as a result is heightened more on the Eon than the K10. So,
when cruising at speeds close to 100kmph, the Alto feels a lot more confident and one
doesn't mind pushing it.

86
A Study on Maruti Suzuki Cars and Comparison of Maruti Suzuki Cars with
other Companies Cars

Maruti Suzuki Alto K10 The 998cc engine is the highlight of the K10 package. Not
only is it peppy, it's also very fuel efficient
The Eon feels strained in comparison. The engine sounds coarse when revved hard, plus
there are constant vibrations that can be felt on the gear shifter as well as the pedals,
which get bothersome soon.
