1. (12 marks) In the following questions, x is a real number. Find the solution sets
of the inequalities in the form of unions of intervals.

(i) (x + 3)/(x − 2) ≥ 0.
(ii) 2x − 1 ≤ |x + 4|.
(iii) |x − 2| < |x + 1|.

2. (8 marks) Determine whether the following functions are one-to-one or not. If so,
find f −1 (y).

(a) f (x) = x−1

(b) y = f (x) = x − 1/x, 0 < x < ∞.

3. (8 marks) Determine if the function f (x) is even or odd or neither.

(i) f (x) = 3x − 2/x.

4. (4 marks) Find the coefficients of the the constant term in the expansions of
(2x − 1/x)8 .

5. (4 marks) Find the coefficient of x4 in the expansion of (2x − 1/x)10 .

6. (4 marks) Let n be a positive integer greater than 5. Find the coefficient of x3 y 2


of the trinomials (1 + 2x + 3y)n .

7. (6 marks) Solve the equation y = (2x + 2−x )/2 for x.

8. (12 marks) Solve the equations for x.

(i) 24x + 5 · 4x = 6.
