Once registered for the class, students will be able to access the homework, eBook, gradebook, etc.
Students will have a two-week free trial before having to pay for access.
If students would like to purchase a hardcopy in addition to the eBook, copies are available from various
retailers, but there are not copies in the Wolfshop during Wintermester. Ensure that the book comes with an
online access code or purchase the online access separately. A hardcopy is not required, only the online access.

Description
Fundamental ideas of analytic geometry and calculus, plane coordinates, graphs, functions, limits, derivatives,
integrals, the fundamental theorem of calculus, rates, extrema and applications thereof. (This course satisfies the
University Core Mathematics requirement. Credit may not be received for Math 176 if credit has already been
awarded for MATH 181 or above.)

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. use and apply the concepts and terminology of rate of change through applications and examples.
2. compute the derivative of a function using rules of differentiation.
3. compute basic integrals using the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus.

Homework | 20%
Homework is to be completed on www.webassign.net. Students MUST register using the class key:
unr 9159 3165. Homework will be available to access on the days that the sections are taught and will be due
the following class period by 11:59pm. Students will be allowed 3 attempts per question. If the due date for an
assignment expires, students will be allowed to request an extension within two days. If an extension is
requested, the incomplete work will be subject to a 20% late penalty and the student will have 24 hrs. to
complete the assignment from the moment of the request. At least the 5 lowest score HW assignments for each
student will be dropped.

Quiz | 20%
There are 5 formally scheduled quizzes to be administered throughout the term (the quiz dates can be seen on
the Course Schedule page of this syllabus). Scheduled quizzes will cover material taught one or two days prior
and will typically be given within the first 15 minutes of class. There will also be occasional in-class exercises
that will count as a quiz for grading purposes. These in-class exercises will not be announced. At least the 2
lowest scores in the quiz grade category will be dropped.

Exam | 40%
There are two midterm exams that are worth 20% of the overall grade each. Exam 1 is scheduled for 1/7/20
and contains content on the sections taught from chapters 1, 2, and 3. Exam 2 is scheduled for 1/13/20 and
contains content on the sections taught from chapters 4 and 5.

Final | 20%
The Final Exam is comprehensive and is scheduled for the last day of class, 1/17/20. In addition to the
content for Exam 1 and Exam 2, the Final also contains content on the sections taught from chapters 6 and 8.

End of term letter grades are assigned as follows:

Missing Quiz or Exam

Early or late make-up quizzes or exams will not be allowed unless the excuse is university approved. In which
case, students are required to set up accommodations beforehand.

Grade Curving
For exams and end of term overall grades, curving will be used if deemed necessary to obtain a desired average
or median score.
