WRITING PORTFOLIO TASK 4b – ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAY

[DRAFT]

ESSAY TITLE: Money alone cannot buy happiness

In this fast-moving globalization era, every human being is continuously putting their
intense effort in the search of money. They are struggling to compete with others to
achieve higher rank in financial status. Social class in the Indian civilization seems to
be still in practice in an evolved form. The choice of occupation and education is highly
influenced by its monetary prospects. The desire to acquire tremendous amount of
money has become insatiable due to the fact that money has reached its peak in
determining the value of a human. Despite this crave for money, money being the
single tool to render us the happiness and satisfaction in life that will keep our life going
is questionable. This issue is essential as it shows the right direction for a man to follow
in order to attain utter joy in life. He would not invest in meritless aspects of life.
Productive steps could be carved to witness the sparkle of life in euphoric moments.
Many people argue that money is the only factor leading the path to happiness.
Although some people debate that only money could provide happiness, there are
impressive reasons supporting the view of money alone cannot buy happiness.

Many have argued that money serves as an essential tool to provide a comfortable
and luxurious lifestyle. The aspiration for wealth enables everyone to lead a life with
the privilege to participate in recreational activities and extravagant worldly matters
when compared with the circumstance of not aiming for money even to people who
claim that pursuing money is undeserving (Lee, 2005). Regardless of the opposing

belief, it can be argued that an individual could not enjoy the lavish lifestyle when his
or health is at stake that would make the pursuit of money meaningless. Settle (as
cited by Veenhoven, 2008) [2014] states that people do not need to suffer from
ailments and can live for a longer period if blessed with good health that are the two
significant determinants of happiness compared to wealth.

Many people believe that a good economic status enables a feeling of achievement to
be acquired. According to Lee (as cited by Layard, 2005) [2005], it is evident that
people have a huge concern about relative income to feel happy about themselves.
Despite the opposing view, a person’s financial status is not an achievement when the
money is inherited. People who inherit wealth could not gain bliss from progressive
improvement in economic situation due to their stagnant income level throughout their
whole life (Schoenberg, 2006).

Mankind in this modern era keen about excelling in material aspects is clearly visible.
Nevertheless, the engrossing issue of whether money renders sheer satisfaction and
happiness in life have been raised by scholars several times. The answer to the
endless debate of money being the prime factor that contributes to happiness in life
plays a valuable role in instilling humans’ right ideology towards life that will guide to
pathway of happiness. Many have argued that money only cannot do the magic of
keeping a man happy throughout his lifetime. There are other non-material aspects
such as relationships filled with love and kindness, religious involvement which
promotes emotional wellbeing and healthy and energetic body that are the most
valuable assets in life gifted by God that will not deprive us of happiness. There are
opposing views of money giving a sense of achievement through high ranking in
financial status that would provide happiness. Nevertheless, improvements and
progress in living standard is only temporary and cannot be sustained forever
especially if the money is inherited or won from lottery. Human beings are urged not
to neglect precious moments and aspects in life in the pursuit of money for a
contented life.
