RADIOGRAPHIC TEST (RT) – SWSI Pipe Joints

Customer’s Name:
Steps Essentials Requirements
1 Job Description xx inch (D) X yy (T). Welded Pipe Joints (Above 6” dia). Material - SS/CS
2 Welding Process GTAW / SMAW / SAW
3 Required Extent of Coverage Spot / 100%
4 Surface Condition Free of foreign material / As welded
5 Surface Temperature XX oC
6 Applicable Test Standard ASME Sec V Article 2
7 Acceptance Standard ANSI B 31.3
8 Personnel Qualifications ASNT RT Lv II & BARC RT I
9 Radiation Source Se 75 / Ir 192 /Co 60 (Cis xx). Source Size – a X b mm or X-ray M/c
10 Exposure Technique SWSI – Panoromic / Offset
11 IQI (Selection, Placement Source IQI Selection as per ASME Sec V Article 2. Table T 276. Selection is based on nominal single
/ Film side) wall thickness plus weld reinforcement. IQI Type - ASTM wire or Plaque Type. No of IQI – x
12 Lead Markers Lead marker placed on film side
13 Shim (if density through pipe & Shim material same as weld material. Density through IQI & shim shall not to exceed -15%.
weld image is < -15% to +30%) Shim size – (L) 45mm x (M) 25mm x (T)
14 Sensitivity Requirements As per ASME Sec V Article 2. Table T – 2762
Visible Wire xx mm dia. Wire Number yy
15 Film Make & Type AGFA Class 2 / Class 1 (with screen) Single or Double Film
16 Test Method Mark equal segment to cover 100% of weld. SFD is minimum to cover the weld segment
and unsharpness requirements. Place the source positioner on the weld centerline and
exactly in the center of the weld segment such that distance to both end of segment is
equal. The primary beam of collimated radiation is focused on center line of weld. Expose
film sequentially to cover 100% of weld.
17 Backscatter Protection 2 or 8 mm sheet lead sheet to protect back scatter.
18 Backscatter Protection Test Place lead letter ‘B’ of 12mm size behind the film.
19 Radiographic Equivalence Factor 1:1 (Applicable only in case of material other than steel)
20 Exposure Time XXX Curie minutes
21 Film Size XX x YY Inches
22 Number of Exposure / Joint Minimum 1
23 Film Processing – Manual Developer – 4-5 minutes at 22-25 deg C, Stop bath – 1-2 minutes, Fixing 7-10 minutes, Final
wash – 30 minutes
24 Optical density Minimum 2.0 and Maximum 4.0 for Single film viewing. Density of the radiograph anywhere
through the image of IQI & adjacent area near IQI shall not vary more than -15% & +30%
25 Identification of discontinuities As NSD or Defect is identified by type and size
26 Test Report Form

Radiography Set-up
t = thickness of job
f = Source to object distance
b = Object to film distance
S = Radiation source
F = Film
Ensure Safety through
1. Plan your work and follow ALARA
2. Collimated exposure & Cordon off
3. Keep Surveymeter on
