1 Scope
1.1 This specification defines the minimum mandatory requirements for the direct
charge purchase of seamless and longitudinal seam submerged-arc welded pipe
in quantities too small to be purchased in accordance with 01-SAMSS-035.
This Specification is therefore applicable when a request for quotation on a pipe
order yields no bids to 01-SAMSS-035 because of the small size of the order.
Pipe orders large enough to be purchased in accordance with 01-SAMSS-035
shall not be broken into smaller orders for the purpose of substituting this
specification.
Commentary Note:
This specification is meant for use on small in-plant pipe orders that are placed
with sources other than pipe mills because the quantities involved are too small
for a mill run. The intent is to use common API and ASTM standards as much as
possible, with only those additional chemistry, hardness, and certification
requirements that are deemed necessary to ensure safe, reliable operation in the
intended services.
1.2 This specification applies only to seamless and longitudinal seam submerged-arc
welded pipe in strength grades equivalent to API SPEC 5L Grade B (i.e., having
a specified minimum yield strength of 35,000 psi) and API SPEC 5L X60 (i.e.,
having a specified minimum yield strength of 60,000 psi). The size ranges
covered vary depending on the API or ASTM specification being used.
1.2.1 Seamless pipe intended for sour (containing H2S) services does not
require any testing or certification in addition to that required by this
specification.
1.3.1 Low pressure (maximum operating pressure 1210 kPa) utility pipe (bare,
galvanized, or cement-lined) unless specified in the Purchase Order.
1.3.3 Any pipe intended for Saudi Aramco Materials System (SAMS) stock.

2.1 Any conflicts between this specification and other applicable Saudi Aramco
Materials System Specifications (SAMSSs), Engineering Standards (SAESs),
Standard Drawings (SASDs), or industry standards, codes, and forms shall be
resolved in writing by the Company or Buyer Representative through the
Manager, Consulting Services Department of Saudi Aramco, Dhahran.
2.2 Direct all requests to deviate from this specification in writing to the Company or
Buyer Representative, who shall follow internal company procedure SAEP-302
and forward such requests to the Manager, Consulting Services Department of
Saudi Aramco, Dhahran.

Pipe supplied to this specification shall comply with the latest edition of the references
listed below except where noted otherwise.

4 General Requirements
4.1 The certification requirements of ASTM A530, paragraph 23 or API SPEC 5L,
41st Edition, paragraph 12.1 (whichever is appropriate) apply to all orders.
4.2 Except as noted below, the maximum allowable carbon equivalent of pipe
purchased in accordance with this specification shall be 0.42 as calculated by the
following formula:

For pipe meeting the requirements of API SPEC 5L, PSL 2, the maximum
allowable carbon equivalent shall be CE(IIW) = 0.43 or CE(Pcm) = 0.25 as
applicable.
4.3 If not all of the elements required by the above formula are reported in the
chemistry analyses, then either:
(b) If the carbon content exceeds 0.12% and only C and Mn are reported in
the chemical analysis, and the nominal wall thickness does not exceed
12.7 mm, the CE value may be calculated by using the formula:
Mn
CE = C + (2)

4.4 Hardness testing is required for all pipe purchased in accordance with this
specification.

4.4.3.1 Use only Vickers hardness testers with a load not exceeding
10 kg.
4.4.3.2 Remove a transverse section from the pipe joint being tested
and make the hardness indentations on the polished and etched
cross-section.
4.4.3.3 Make two traverses, one within 1.0 mm from the OD and one
within 1.0 mm from the ID surface. Each traverse shall consist
of at least 2 indentations in each of the following locations:
(a) weld metal
(b) heat affected zones on both sides of the weld, and
(c) parent metal on both sides of the weld.
SAW straight-seam pipe shall be subjected to cold expansion when the pipe is
intended for aggressive wet sour service that meets all of the following
conditions:
(1) H2S partial pressure ≥ 1.0 bar (14.5 psia).
(2) H2S + CO2 partial pressure ≥ 3.0 bar (43.5 psia).
(3) Calculated pH ≤ 3.6.
The pipe shall be cold expanded to at least 0.3% of the pipe circumference, but
not exceeding 1.5%. Heat-treatment of pipe may be used in lieu of cold
expansion, provided that heat treatment does not have an adverse effect on the
mechanical properties and pipe roundness. All required final inspection and
testing per the applicable code and standard shall be conducted after cold
expansion or heat treatment.
