6th April 2020

Dear Dr.,

Concerns about our Education System Due to Pandemic of Covid-19

My name is Flora Anak Dawat and I am a trainee teacher at IPG Kampus Pendidikan Teknik,
Negeri Sembilan. I am writing this letter to raise my concern regarding the issue of our
education system due to the pandemic of Covid-19 that seems to have no end to it. The main
issue that I want to highlight in this letter is about the equity of education. Although it is too
early to judge how reactions to COVID-19 will affect education systems in this country, signs
are suggesting that it could have a lasting impact on the students. Besides, we can see that
the coronavirus pandemic has changed how millions around the globe are educated.
Therefore, I would like to suggest a few practical measures or we can call it innovative
solutions that can be considered for the survival of education in facing this unexpected
pandemic.

First and foremost, I would like to explain what I meant as equity in education. As Malaysians,
we cannot deny that not every child in this country has equal access to education. Especially
those in rural areas, they might lack facilities and opportunities in utilizing technology at their
home. What makes it worse is that we are restricted to go outside as the government has

declared MCO to cope with Covid-19. Therefore, we have no choice but to implement ‘home-
schooling’. This will affects the children in rural areas as they depend 100% on teachers and
materials in school.

To ensure that every child will be able to keep in track with their study, a school can
implement online classes through applications such as Google Classroom, Zoom, and even
via Whatsapp. However, we should consider those children that might not have an internet
connection at home, expensive data plans or even could not afford laptops or smartphone.
The best solution to cope with this dilemma is that the government can utilize the power of
television channels to the fullest. Perhaps by having educational channels throughout
weekdays especially from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m to avoid or minimize the children from watching
cartoons only.

Other than that, we can encourage the parents to become the teachers for their children.
Becoming a teacher here does not mean that the parent needs to teach for every subject but
more to facilitating their children to ensure that all the homework is finished and revision
should not be left out. There are many exercises provided in their workbooks and textbooks.
Those are the least that all parents can do besides provide their children with facilities such
as laptops or computers as well as an internet connection for those who capable to access to
the online class.

I hope that the government can take further action to solve this unexpected issue. Education
is vital for all and therefore no one should not be left behind. Thank you for spending the time
to read my letter.

Sincerely,

flora
