Degrees of freedom(f):
Determine the values of CV, CP, C𝜸 for the following gases :
Example (a) He
(b) H2
(c) H2 at very low temperature
(d) H2 at very high temperature
(e) SO3
(f) SO2, taking only 20% contribution of vibrational energy
Example Determine the adiabatic exponent, 𝛄, for a three dimensional N- atomic gas, at
a. Moderate temperature
b. Very high temperature
Example Molecules of a gas have ‘f’ degree of freedom, where degree of freedom
represents the number of independent methods to express the energy of
molecules. Determine the adiabatic exponent for the gas.
Example 4 moles of an ideal gas having 𝛄 = 1.67 are mixed with 2 moles of another
ideal gas having 𝛄 = 1.40. Find the equivalent values of 𝛄 for the mixture.
Example An amount Q of heat is added to a monoatomic ideal gas in a process in
which the gas performs a work Q/2 on its surrounding. Find the molar heat
capacity for the process.
Example An ideal gas is taken through a process in which the pressure and the
volume are changed according to the equation P = KV. Show that the
molar heat capacity of the gas for the process is given by C= CV + R/2.
Example One mole of an ideal gas with heat capacity at constant pressure, C P
undergoes the process: T = To + αV, To and α are constants. Show that the
heat capacity of the gas as a function of its volume is C = CP + RT/ αV.
