1. How would you describe yourself?

I am a young man who is continuously trying to grow into a better person. I

intend to better myself with every chance I get, no matter the circumstance. I am also a
faithful son who aspire to make my parents and my family proud by exceeding through
their expectations. I am still trying to know myself more as I grow up, but so far, I am
happy and contented with what I currently have and who I currently am.
2. What are the influences of your family in your development as an individual?
My family has been there for me since I was born into this world. They have
shaped me into who I am today, together with other factors. Most importantly, the fact
that I do not wish for them to be disappointed at me makes me want to work harder and
excel in my studies, which is what I am doing today. They have supported me with my
passion for Accountancy, making me thrive harder to do my best in the field. There are
times when I doubt myself but they were always there to keep me on my feet. When I
have no one else to run to, I know they will always be there to understand and help me.
3. Think of the time when you felt you were your “true self”. What made you think you
were truly who you are during this time of your life?
It was when I won a quiz bee associated with Accountancy. I felt like it was
something I’m meant to do, as if I was born to do it. I felt happy and alive when they
called my name and told me I won, I wanted more. Winning quiz bees, be it the third
place or the first, it made me feel me. It’s the “me” that I’ve always wanted to become.
The adrenaline rush it gave me made me want to do more and more. And the more I
associate myself with these competitions, the more I feel like myself. Back then I thought
I was only good at playing computer games. I would stay up late to beat high score after
high score but academics, it made me feel good about myself. It made me feel alive,
being able to solve those questions made me feel happy. And I am most happy when I am
me.
4. Provide a time when you felt you were not living your “true self”. Why did you have to
live like that? What did you do about it?
Every teenager must have come to a point where he just feels lost. Completely out
of the blue, you feel like you are not yourself and you are aware but you couldn’t do
anything. I felt as if everything and everyone was against me, even myself. I knew it
wasn’t me. I didn’t feel like doing anything other than playing games because I felt like I
had nothing to lose. I completely shut down. I wasn’t happy nor was I sad. I was just not
me. I was triggered and I couldn’t stop the feeling, it took over me for a while and I
didn’t know what to do. Just like how it came, it also went away out of the blue. It was a
period of my life that I felt most helpless, like no one would understand me. I helped
myself get out of the hole because I know if I stayed, it would’ve been harder. I
channeled my focus to reading more and more about the thing I love the most-
accounting. I pushed myself to be back to “normal”, back to the old me.
5. What social pressures help shape yourself? Would you have wanted it otherwise?

The fact that everyone inside the campus of the Polytechnic University of the
Philippines is trying hard to maintain grades made me very conscious as well. Not
everyone is privileged to study at our school, making it obvious that we have to do
something in exchange for a subsidized quality education. A lot of kids my age as well
were not lucky enough to have an education. The quality of life is becoming harder to
sustain as time goes by without a degree. These are just some of the social pressures that
has shaped me. I wouldn’t have been studying hard if it weren’t for these. I also have a
responsibility at home to uphold. I have to make my parents proud and repay them even
if I don’t have to. To give them a better future meant that I had to work hard in the
present. Studying hard and excelling at academics is something that I am currently doing
that was affected by these factors. I would’ve liked it if the world could’ve been a little
bit better place to give everyone what they need. But that’s just wishful thinking. Having
it otherwise could easily alter who I am right now and I wouldn’t like to the risk.

6. What aspects of your self do you think may be changed or would like to change?

I was taught that Heraclitus said that change is the only constant thing in the
world. Nothing is permanent except change. As we grow older, we have the chance to
change for the better. We learn, we move on, we grow as an individual. Everything about
me could be changed if it meant that I will benefit, as well as the people around me, from
it. We get to choose who we become as time goes by and it means that we change
constantly. My whole personality can do a 180 in ten years, or maybe one day. Again,
nothing in the world is permanent except change. We evolve to be able to adapt to
changes in our environment, physically and mentally.
