With great honor and pride that came with each wit and intelligence in the field
of research, seven students from Holy Infant Academy (HIA) once again flaunted
their projects internationally as they competed in the International Invention and
Trade Expo (ITTE) held at London, England last August 29-30.
All five science investigatory projects of these students won grand awards with
two golds, five special awards, and one for each of the grand, platinum, and diamond
awards given by the judges and organizers of the event.
Tenth graders Karize Ann Maminta, together with the team of Flodah Nadine
Rafa, Paula Marie Marquez, and Sean Aron Geonanga, seized gold awards and the
Outstanding Innovation Award by the Bio Resources for Innovation Clinical
Applications Research Unit in Thailand with their respective studies: “Air MO-FY: An
Air Quality Monitoring and Purifying Device”, and “Radioprotective Effect of Dried
Oyster Mushroom (Pleurotus ostreatus) Against radiation-induced Cell damage in
the Cultured Human Lymphocytes”.
The tenth graders mentioned also clinched the European France Inventors
Special Award with another group of grade 10 and grade 9 students, namely Kiana
Nicole Reyes, Clara Elayne Pascua, and Mary Khiela Duran with their project
“Atmosphere Awareness Device: Home-Based Weather Monitoring System”.
Allysa Ericka Alcaide, grade 11 student, also won the European France Inventors
Special Award as well as the UAE'S Inventors Ahmed Maijan Award with her title
“Roboscythe: Modern Approach of Grass-trimming Using Android-Controlled Lawn
Mower”.
Moreover, despite not being able to join the HIA team in London, grade 11 and
grade 10 siblings Jamie Anne Evora and Justine Anne Evora received the WIPA Grand
Award and the Platinum Award by the IITE, which is recognized as the highest award
for the international expo with their invention called “RESCUEBOT: Earthquake
Victims Searching Device for Immediate and Safe Rescue Operation”.
Mr. Dexter Moreno, head coach and adviser of these student scientists,
presented the study of the Evora siblings to still be able to take part in the contest.
He stated that he was very grateful and ecstatic for this huge milestone and
achievement that continued the legacy of the good quality of research and science
education in the school.
A Diamond Award was also granted to Holy Infant Academy, being the only
Philippines representative to the ITTE London.
Together with the competitors in London are their parents, Mr. Moreno, Mrs.
Noida Castro-- the head of Science Department in Department of Education Calapan,
and Fr. Raymond Ruga, the superintendent of the Apostolic Vicariate of Calapan
Parochial Schools, with each of them giving full out support in guiding and
supporting the students throughout the competitions.
